Why Honeymoon in Uluwatu
Uluwatu is all about the edge. The cliffs are tall and sheer and the water below shifts from turquoise to deep blue. The coastline is broken by small beaches reachable only by long flights of steps. It is a natural stage for sunset, which is the main event every evening.
It is also one of Bali's most culturally significant corners. Uluwatu Temple, one of the island's key sea temples, stands on a cliff about 230 feet above the waves. Its history stretches back centuries. The nightly Kecak dance on the cliffside is among the most memorable performances in Bali. Add first-rate surf, stylish beach clubs and some of the island's finest resorts and there is plenty here for a surfer, a spa lover or a couple who mostly want the view.
When to Go
The Bukit Peninsula is drier than much of Bali, but it still follows the island's broad seasonal pattern. The dry season, roughly April to October, brings sunny days, lower humidity and the most reliable sunsets. It is also prime surf season on the west-facing breaks around Uluwatu.
July, August and the Christmas to New Year period are the busiest and most expensive times. May, June and September are excellent alternatives, with strong weather and fewer visitors. The wet season, from about November to March, brings heavier showers, often in the afternoon or evening, but also lower rates and greener landscapes. Even in the rainy months, there are usually plenty of bright hours for the beach.
Where to Stay
Uluwatu's clifftops hold some of Bali's best luxury resorts. Two stand out for honeymooners.
Bulgari Resort Bali sits roughly 500 feet above the ocean, with Antonio Citterio-designed villas, private pools, an inclinator down to a long beach and Il Ristorante, led by Italian chef Niko Romito. Alila Villas Uluwatu offers striking contemporary architecture by WOHA, pool villas with open-air pavilions and the famous Sunset Cabana suspended over the cliff.
Beyond these two, the area has many other clifftop resorts, private villas and boutique stays near popular beaches such as Bingin and Padang Padang. Staying on the cliffs gives you privacy and views, while beachside guesthouses suit couples who want to surf at dawn. As a rough guide, the top clifftop resorts run from several hundred to well over a thousand dollars a night, while smaller villas near Bingin can cost $150 to $400 (approximate).
Romantic Things to Do
- Watch the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple, performed on the cliffside at sunset with the ocean behind the dancers.
- Spend a lazy day at Padang Padang, Bingin or Suluban, beaches tucked into the cliffs and reached by stairs.
- Take a surf lesson together on a gentler break, or watch experienced surfers ride Uluwatu's famous waves.
- Book a clifftop dinner, either at your resort or at one of the area's many oceanview restaurants.
- Book a Balinese flower bath and couples' massage at a resort spa.
- Toast sunset with cocktails at a cliff-edge bar.
Getting There & Around
Uluwatu is one of the most accessible areas of Bali. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is typically 30 to 45 minutes away by car, depending on traffic, making it ideal for arriving after a long flight or relaxing before departure.
US travelers generally connect through an Asian hub such as Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong. Once in Uluwatu, private drivers and resort cars are the most comfortable way to get around. Ride-hailing apps are widely used. Roads on the Bukit can be narrow and congested near popular beaches, especially around sunset, so plan outings for the morning. Many beaches require walking down steep steps, so comfortable sandals are a must.
Food & Drink
Uluwatu's food scene has blossomed alongside its surf culture. Expect relaxed beachfront cafes serving smoothie bowls and grilled fish, stylish restaurants overlooking the ocean and lively beach clubs where an afternoon of music and cocktails slips by.
Resort dining is a highlight. At Bulgari, Il Ristorante pairs Italian technique with Balinese produce, while Sangkar serves all-day dishes with ocean views. At Alila Villas Uluwatu, the Warung offers Indonesian and Balinese dishes with a selection of sambals. The Sunset Cabana Bar is made for sundowners. Don't miss trying fresh seafood grilled Jimbaran-style, a short drive north, where tables are set up on the sand at sunset.
Honeymoon Tips
- Plan at least three nights in Uluwatu to balance beach days, temple visits and resort time.
- Visit Uluwatu Temple with sunglasses and hats secured; the resident macaques are famous for snatching belongings.
- Wear a sarong and sash at the temple, which are typically provided at the entrance.
- Check tide times before beach trips; some coves are best at lower tide.
- Strong currents are common, so swim only where conditions are calm and lifeguards are present.
- Uluwatu's famous breaks are for experienced surfers. Book lessons at a gentler beach your instructor chooses.
- Mosquitoes carry dengue in Bali, so use repellent at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Indonesia.
