Hotel Schloss Dürnstein is the most romantic hotel in the Wachau Valley: a five-star castle built in the early 17th century by the Princes of Starhemberg, sitting right on the Danube in Austria's prettiest wine village. Couples come for the river terrace at dinner, the outdoor pool inside the old walls and the chance to walk out the gate into Dürnstein's lanes after the day-trippers leave.
The Thiery family has owned the castle since 1937. Rosemarie and Johann C. Thiery restored it. Today siblings Johannes Christian Thiery and Maria Katharina Thiery-Schroll run it as the third generation. That continuity shows in the details: antique furniture mixed with modern pieces, a library, a bar and lobby that feel lived in, plus staff who know the valley's wineries.
It is a seasonal stay. The main hotel closes each year from late October to late March, when the Gate Rooms annex and Villa Schönthal stay open. Visit between spring and autumn for apricot blossom, summer swims and the grape harvest, when the valley is at its best.

Why Couples Love Schloss Dürnstein
Few hotels in Europe have a setting this good. The castle stands on the riverbank in Dürnstein, a small walled village, with vineyards climbing the slopes behind it and the ruins of the medieval castle where Richard the Lionheart was held captive on the hill above. In the evening, when the river cruise passengers have gone, the village becomes quiet and lovely.
The Danube Terrace is the heart of a stay. You eat breakfast there. Dinner with a bottle of Grüner Veltliner or Riesling from the surrounding hills is the evening most couples remember. The outdoor pool sits in the castle courtyard, looking up at the ruins and the abbey, while a small spa with an indoor pool, sauna, steam bath and infrared cabin covers cooler days.
The Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Here you sleep inside part of it.
Rooms and Suites to Book
The hotel lists twelve room and suite categories, all with a mix of antique furniture and modern comfort. Rooms look out over either the Danube or the vineyards, so the single most useful thing you can do is ask for a river view.
- Castle Room and Castle Room Deluxe: the entry categories in the main building, fine for a short stay.
- Junior Suites and the Corner Suite: more space for a three or four night honeymoon, with a good balance of price and comfort.
- Tower Suite Deluxe, Historic Suite Deluxe and Balcony Suite Deluxe: the special-occasion choices, with the most character. A balcony over the river is worth paying for here.
- Gate Rooms: in the annex by the castle gate; open in winter when the main hotel closes.
- Villa Schönthal: a separate villa, better for privacy or a longer stay.
Room specifics vary, so confirm the view and layout with the hotel before you book.
Food, Wine and the Castle Spa
Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. as a buffet plus an étagère of cold cuts and cheeses, with egg dishes cooked to order. Eat outside on the terrace whenever the weather allows.
The main restaurant on the Danube Terrace pairs regional ingredients with modern and international touches. It is open to outside guests too. Tables are usually available to reserve the same morning. For a casual evening, the hotel's Schloss Greisslerei in the village center is a deli, bistro and wine bar with Wachau wines and regional classics. Küffer Keller is a grill tavern with an open fire for summer nights. The hotel also arranges wine tastings.
The Castle Spa is small but well planned, with an indoor pool and waterfall, a sauna, steam bath, infrared cabin and relaxation area. Day spa hours run from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The pool and spa close with the main hotel in winter.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do in the Wachau
Dürnstein is the best base in the valley, with most sights within half an hour.
- Hike up to the castle ruins: a steep but short climb with views down the Danube.
- Take a traditional Zille boat: the hotel works with Bootstouren Wachau on private wooden-boat trips between Spitz, Dürnstein and Krems, with stops for a swim, a picnic or a wine tasting.
- Cycle the riverside path: the hotel rents bikes in season. The flat route links wine villages like Weissenkirchen and Spitz.
- Visit Melk Abbey: about 30 minutes upstream by car or by river boat.
- Drink at a Heuriger: the seasonal wine taverns open for short periods, so ask reception which ones are serving.
Visit in April for apricot blossom, July for apricots and September and October for harvest. A good split: one of you hikes the vineyard trails while the other books a spa afternoon.
Getting There
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is about an hour away by car. Take the A1 or A22 toward Krems, then follow the river road to Dürnstein, 6 km upstream from Krems. Dürnstein has a general parking ban in its center, so drive straight to the castle and park inside its courtyard.
Without a car, take the train from Vienna to Krems, about an hour, then a bus or taxi for the last few kilometers. In summer, river boats connect Krems, Dürnstein, Spitz and Melk, which makes arriving by water an option. The seasonal Wachaubahn railway also runs between Krems and Emmersdorf in summer.
Check-in is from 3 p.m. and check-out is by 11 a.m. Two or three nights here pair well with a few nights in Vienna, either before or after. The drive is short enough that you will not lose a day to transfers.
Is It Worth It?
For a Wachau honeymoon, yes. No other hotel in the valley puts you in a real castle on the river with a pool, spa and terrace restaurant on site. Rates are dynamic and change with season and occupancy. As a rough guide, expect several hundred euros a night for a standard room in summer, with the deluxe suites well above that. The Royal Midweek offer, with four nights from Sunday to Thursday and one night free, is the best way to stretch your budget.
Pick elsewhere if you are traveling between late October and late March, when the main castle closes. Couples who prefer a winemaker's guesthouse with home cooking will find warmer, simpler and cheaper stays in Weissenkirchen or Spitz. If a bigger spa matters most, look at Loisium Wine & Spa Resort in nearby Langenlois. Cancellation is free up to seven days before arrival.
