Grandhotel Pupp is the most famous hotel in Karlovy Vary and the obvious choice for couples who want a honeymoon with old-world glamour. Its story goes back to 1701, when the Saxon Hall was built on this spot. Six generations of the Pupp family then turned it into the grand hotel you see today, rebuilt in neo-Baroque style by the Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer between 1896 and 1907. It stands at the top of the promenade along the Teplá River, a short stroll from the colonnades and their hot springs.

Inside there are 228 rooms and suites, a spa with a large pool and saunas, a Grandrestaurant with a seasonal menu and Becher's Bar. Film fans will recognize it from Casino Royale, where it stood in for the Hotel Splendide in Montenegro. It also features in Last Holiday. The hotel hosts stars of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival every summer.

It suits couples who love history, architecture and slow days of spa treatments, coffee and promenade walks. Couples who want sleek modern design or a beach should combine Karlovy Vary with Prague or look elsewhere.

Why Couples Love Grandhotel Pupp

It looks like a set because it often is one. The cream façade, chandeliers, ballrooms and grand staircases feel built for a period film. The hotel has appeared in dozens of them. It has also been cited as an inspiration for The Grand Budapest Hotel, which tells you something about its character.

The position is ideal. Step outside and you are on the riverside promenade with its pastel buildings, cafés and spa houses. The colonnades are a pleasant walk away, where you fill a porcelain spa cup at the hot springs and sip as you go. Evenings are quiet once day visitors leave, so couples can stroll under the lamps along the river. The hotel still has a sense of ceremony that most modern hotels have lost.

Rooms and Suites to Book

With 228 rooms and suites, the hotel offers everything from compact doubles to grand suites with period furniture. Rooms vary a lot in size, style and view, so it pays to be specific when you book.

For a honeymoon, choose a room in the Grandhotel's main building rather than a secondary wing. Ask for a river or promenade view, which looks over the spa town's rooftops and the forested hills. A junior suite or suite gives you a sitting room, useful during winter evenings.

The hotel is gradually undergoing a sensitive restoration, so ask whether your room has been renovated. Refreshed rooms are more comfortable, while some older rooms can feel dated. Rates rise sharply during the film festival in early summer, when the hotel is often full.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The Grandrestaurant is the hotel's showpiece dining room, with a seasonal menu built on local ingredients. Dress up a little and make it one special evening. The hotel has several other restaurants and cafés for lighter meals. Becher's Bar is named after Becherovka, the herbal liqueur invented in Karlovy Vary, so order a glass at least once.

The spa is the reason many couples come. It has a large pool, saunas and a menu of treatments, including Ayurvedic massages. Karlovy Vary is a traditional spa town, so you can also book mineral baths, wraps and massages at the hotel. Some packages include a medical consultation and a set program of treatments, while others let you book à la carte. Choose à la carte if you just want a relaxing massage for two.

Things to Do

Walk the promenade to the Mill Colonnade and the Hot Spring Colonnade, where the Vřídlo geyser shoots up indoors. Buy porcelain spa cups and taste the different springs, which vary in temperature and mineral content. Stop for oplatky, the town's thin spa wafers, with a coffee.

Take the funicular up to the Diana lookout tower for views over the valley, then follow forest trails back down. The Moser glass factory and the Becherovka museum make good rainy-day visits. In early summer, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival fills the town with screenings and parties.

For a day trip, the smaller spa town of Mariánské Lázně is about an hour away. The castle town of Loket sits on a bend of the Ohře River, about 20 minutes away.

Getting There

Most couples fly into Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG), which has connections across Europe and some nonstop US flights in season. From Prague, Karlovy Vary is about two hours by car or bus. Regular coaches run from Prague. The hotel can arrange private transfers. Karlovy Vary also has a small airport (KLV) about 15 minutes away, with limited flights.

Once you arrive, you do not need a car. The spa district is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Taxis are easy to find. Parking can be expensive in the center, so if you drive, ask the hotel about parking arrangements. A good plan is three or four nights in Prague followed by two or three in Karlovy Vary, ending with the drive back to the airport.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who love history and grand hotels, yes. Grandhotel Pupp offers big-name glamour at prices well below those of comparable hotels in Vienna or Paris. Expect rates very roughly from about $200–350 a night for a standard double (approximate), with suites and film festival dates higher.

The trade-offs are age and size. Not every room has been restored, some feel old-fashioned. With 228 rooms it can be busy with groups and conference guests. Service is formal rather than personal. Couples who want something smaller and more modern can find boutique options along the same promenade. Book the Pupp if you want to feel like you are in a period film, with a spa and the colonnades a short stroll away.

Insider tips

  1. Ask for a renovated room in the main building with a river or promenade view.
  2. Book spa treatments à la carte if you do not want a full medical spa program.
  3. Avoid film festival dates unless you want the buzz; rates and crowds rise sharply.
  4. Take the funicular to the Diana lookout tower at sunset.

FAQ

Grandhotel Pupp questions, answered

Was Casino Royale filmed at Grandhotel Pupp?

Yes. In the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale, Grandhotel Pupp appears as the Hotel Splendide in Montenegro. The hotel was also a major location for Last Holiday, starring Queen Latifah. It has appeared in many other films and has been cited as an inspiration for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Does Grandhotel Pupp have a spa?

Yes. The spa has a large pool, saunas and a menu of treatments, including Ayurvedic massages. Karlovy Vary is a traditional spa town, so mineral baths and wraps are popular too. You can book packages with medical consultations or choose individual treatments, which suits most honeymooners.

How do we get to Karlovy Vary?

Fly into Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). From there, Karlovy Vary is about two hours by car, coach or private transfer. The small Karlovy Vary Airport (KLV) is close by but has limited flights. You will not need a car in town, since the spa district is compact and walkable.

When is the film festival in Karlovy Vary?

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival takes place every summer, usually in late June or early July. Grandhotel Pupp hosts many of the stars, so it is busy and expensive during the festival. Choose those dates if you enjoy the buzz, or avoid them for a quieter, cheaper stay.

How many nights should we stay in Karlovy Vary?

Two or three nights is enough for most couples. That allows time to taste the springs, walk the forest trails, enjoy the spa and visit Loket Castle. Many couples pair it with three or four nights in Prague, which makes a balanced honeymoon of city sights and spa town calm.
