Rosewood Little Dix Bay

A half-mile crescent of sand that has been seducing couples since 1964

Rosewood Little Dix Bay is the best all-round beach resort on Virgin Gorda for a honeymoon: a long, calm crescent of sand, rooms that open onto it and enough restaurants that you never have to plan dinner. Laurance Rockefeller opened it in 1964 as a low-key retreat where the scenery did the talking. After Hurricane Irma the resort was rebuilt from the ground up. The result is lighter, more modern and still very much about that half-mile beach.

It suits couples who want polish without stiffness. You can spend the morning snorkeling straight off the sand, take a boat to a deserted beach at lunch and be back for a massage looking over the Sir Francis Drake Channel. The Baths are a short drive south, which matters, because being first at the boulders is the single best tip on the island.

The trade-off is price. Rates sit firmly in luxury territory and nothing is included, so food and drink add up fast. Couples who want a private island feel or an all-inclusive bill should look at Oil Nut Bay or a smaller North Sound resort instead.

Highlights at a glance

  • One-bedroom suites with private infinity pools
  • Sugar Mill, Reef House and the Rum Room
  • Sense, A Rosewood Spa above the Sir Francis Drake Channel
  • Beach Drops to secluded beaches by boat

Why Couples Love Little Dix Bay

The beach is the reason. Little Dix Bay curves for about half a mile between two headlands, with a reef that keeps the water flat on most days. It is wide enough that you can always find a pair of loungers away from everyone else. The sand is soft enough for barefoot walks after dinner.

The resort also feels rooted. The low buildings, timber roofs and gardens follow Rockefeller's original idea of letting the landscape lead, so it never reads as a big hotel even when it is full. Staff tend to stay for years. Returning guests talk about them by name.

Location helps too. Spanish Town, the marina and the island's small airport are minutes away, The Baths and Spring Bay are a short taxi ride and the boat trips of North Sound start almost from the dock.

Cottages, Suites and Villas to Book

Rooms come in three broad families. The cottages sit in the gardens a few steps from the sand. They are the most affordable way in and feel private, with plenty of shade and the sound of the sea at night.

The ocean-view suites have open, light-filled interiors and generous outdoor living space. The one-bedroom pool suites add a private infinity pool facing the water. For most honeymooners these are the category to stretch for. You get a view, a place to swim alone and a terrace big enough for breakfast in robes.

Villas, on the beach or the hillside, are built for celebrations or long stays. Villa Katsura is the showpiece, with a big infinity pool and a view straight over the channel. Ask the reservations team which suites face the sunset before you book.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Little Dix Bay has more dining range than anywhere else on Virgin Gorda, which counts on an island where the restaurant scene is small. The Sugar Mill is the romantic dinner choice, the Pavilion handles relaxed breakfasts and casual meals near the beach and Reef House works well for a long lunch with your toes almost in the sand. The Rum Room pours aged rums from around the Caribbean. A Chef's Table experience, pool and beach service, in-room dining and private dinners set up on the sand round things out.

Sense, A Rosewood Spa, sits on the hillside looking out over the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Book a couples treatment late in the afternoon, then walk down for a sundowner. Fitness classes, yoga and meditation sessions run through the week if one of you likes a structured morning.

Why guests fall for it

Things to Do

The resort's Beach Drops are the standout: a boat drops the two of you on a secluded beach with a picnic and picks you up a few hours later. Book one early in your stay so you can repeat it if you love it.

Snorkeling gear is easy to borrow and the reef off the beach is good for an hour of fish spotting. Tennis and pickleball clinics run most days and a farm tour shows where some of the kitchen's produce comes from.

Away from the resort, go to The Baths at opening time, before the day boats arrive, then swim north to The Crawl or Devil's Bay. Hike to the tower on Gorda Peak in the cool of the morning. Spend a day on a chartered boat around North Sound with lunch at a beach bar. Finish one evening at the Copper Mine ruins for sunset.

Getting There

Most couples fly to Beef Island (EIS) on Tortola via San Juan, Miami or St. Thomas, then cross to Virgin Gorda by boat, which takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Ask the resort to arrange the transfer so someone meets you at arrivals and handles bags; it is far less stressful than juggling public ferry schedules after a long travel day.

Small planes also land at Virgin Gorda Airport (VIJ), a short drive from the resort, from San Juan. This saves the boat leg but limits luggage, so pack soft bags.

Once here, you do not need a car for most of the stay. Taxis run to The Baths, Spanish Town and Gorda Peak. The resort can book them. If you want to explore every beach, a jeep for a day or two is enough. Roads are steep and narrow. Driving is on the left.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a classic Caribbean beach resort with real service, yes. The beach is one of the best in the BVI, the rebuilt rooms are comfortable and the spa, dining and boat trips mean the days look after themselves.

The catch is the bill. Room rates are roughly in the $1,000 to $2,000 a night range for most of the year. Holiday weeks cost more at the holidays, with taxes, service and every meal on top. Watch for the resort's own offers, which have included discounts on suites and extra free nights for longer stays.

Pick elsewhere if you want everything included, total seclusion or a lively bar scene. Oil Nut Bay feels more private, Saba Rock is more casual and cheaper and a villa near Mahoe Bay gives you space and a kitchen. Mosquitoes appear at dusk; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Insider tips

  1. Book a one-bedroom pool suite rather than a villa; for two people it gives you the best view and privacy for the money.
  2. Ask for a taxi to The Baths at opening time and you will have the boulders nearly to yourselves.
  3. Reserve a Beach Drop on your first or second day so there is time to do it again.
  4. Check the resort's offers page before booking; longer stays have earned free nights.

FAQ

Rosewood Little Dix Bay questions, answered

Is Rosewood Little Dix Bay kid-free?

No. Little Dix Bay welcomes families, especially during school holidays and the Christmas weeks. The beach is long enough that it rarely feels crowded and the suites and villas are spread out, so couples still find quiet. If you want a kid-free atmosphere, travel outside US school breaks or request a suite away from the main pool and family-heavy villas.

Which room is best for a honeymoon?

A one-bedroom pool suite is the sweet spot. You get an ocean view, a private infinity pool and a large terrace without paying villa prices. Garden cottages are the value pick if you plan to spend most of the day on the beach, while a villa makes sense only for a long stay or a celebration with family joining you.

How do we get from the airport to Little Dix Bay?

Fly to Beef Island (EIS) on Tortola, then take a boat to Virgin Gorda, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Ask the resort to arrange a private transfer that meets you at the airport. Alternatively, small planes from San Juan land at Virgin Gorda Airport (VIJ), a short drive away, though luggage limits are tight.

How far is it from The Baths?

The Baths are on the southern tip of Virgin Gorda, a short taxi ride south from the resort. That closeness is a real advantage. Go at opening time, before the day boats from Tortola arrive. You can scramble through the boulder caves and swim in the pools with very few people around. Bring water shoes for the rocks.

What does a stay at Little Dix Bay cost?

Expect roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a night for most rooms and suites outside the holidays, with taxes and service charges on top. Meals are not included. Dinner for two with wine can run several hundred dollars. Prices change by season, so treat these figures as approximate and compare the resort's own offers before booking.
