Jamaica Inn is the kind of place that hardly seems to exist anymore. There are no televisions in the rooms and everyone still dresses for dinner. The most pressing decision of the afternoon is whether to take tea on the verandah or have another swim. The suites, painted in the inn's signature blue and white, open straight onto a private crescent of golden sand on the edge of Ocho Rios. A black Labrador called Shadow, the fifth of his line, wanders the lawn.

The Morrow family has run the inn since 1958. Four generations have kept its spirit remarkably intact. Its guest book reads like a mid-century who's who: Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Noël Coward, Ian Fleming, Errol Flynn and Sir Winston Churchill, who favored the White Suite. Yet it never feels like a museum. The Ocean Spa was named Jamaica's Best Hotel Spa in the 2025 World Spa Awards and newer cottages come with infinity plunge pools. The welcome is genuinely warm. For couples who want romance with grace, history and a little old-fashioned glamour, there are few better addresses in the Caribbean.

The Cove at the Edge of Town

Ocho Rios is Jamaica's garden coast, a land of waterfalls, rivers and deep green hills. Jamaica Inn has one of its loveliest beaches. The crescent of sand stretches roughly 700 feet, framed by palms and a manicured croquet lawn. The water is calm and clear enough for an easy morning swim.

Just offshore lies the White River Fish Sanctuary, which the inn helped establish and still supports with coral planting. That means healthy reef life within an easy snorkel of the beach. Despite being minutes from the center of Ocho Rios, the inn feels entirely private; once you are on the verandah, the town disappears and only the sound of the sea remains.

Verandah Suites and Cottages

The verandah is the soul of every stay. Most suites have one so large it doubles as an outdoor living room, furnished for reading, breakfast and long conversations.

  • Deluxe Verandah Suites sit on the ground floor and open directly onto the croquet lawn and beach.
  • Premier Verandah Suites add a king bed and a furnished verandah facing the ocean.
  • Balcony Suites are upstairs, with sea, beach and mountain views.
  • The Cowdray Suite has a dressing room and lovely sunset views.
  • The Blue Cottage sits steps from the sand, with louvered windows framing the sea.
  • Suite 21, on a secluded point, has its own sundeck and plunge pool.
  • One- and two-bedroom cottages each come with an infinity plunge pool.

For a honeymoon, a cottage or Suite 21 offers the most privacy, while a Premier Verandah Suite captures the inn's classic charm.

Five Courses Under the Stars

Evenings revolve around the Terrace Restaurant, where tables are dressed in white and set beneath palm trees and open sky. The five-course menu changes nightly, blending international dishes with Caribbean influences and local seafood. Local musicians usually play during dinner. Lobster appears once a week when in season. If you prefer, dinner can be served on your own verandah or in your cottage.

Days are more relaxed. Breakfast and light lunches are served at the open-air Sea Shanty by the water, while Teddy's Beach Grill fires up wood-fired pizzas by the pool and beach. Afternoon tea and evening cocktails with hors d'oeuvres complete the ritual. Meal plans range from à la carte to all-inclusive.

Why guests fall for it

Breakfast and sunset drinks on the private verandah
The calm, golden crescent beach
Long-serving staff who make guests feel like family
Candlelit dinners with live music under the palms
The peaceful, TV-free atmosphere and timeless style

The Ocean Spa

Set right at the water's edge, the Ocean Spa is one of the inn's quiet triumphs and was named Jamaica's Best Hotel Spa in the 2025 World Spa Awards. The standout feature is a saltwater sea bath carved from natural rock, an open-air pool where you can cool off between treatments while looking out over the Caribbean.

The menu spans massages, body scrubs, facials and hair treatments, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. A morning yoga class is held regularly. Private sessions in hatha, yin and meditation can be arranged. For honeymooners, a side-by-side massage followed by a dip in the sea bath is about as restorative as an afternoon can get.

Waterfalls, Rivers and Rum

Ocho Rios is surrounded by adventure. The inn's own fishing boat, Little Children, can carry you along the coast to Dunn's River Falls for a guided climb. Konoko Falls, with its gardens and views, is about ten minutes away. Inland, Nine Mile, Bob Marley's birthplace, is about an hour's drive.

Bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae River, the Appleton Estate rum distillery and cycling past coffee farms in the Blue Mountains are all long days out, so pick one. Easier half days include a glass-bottom boat tour over the reef and a farm tour with a plant-based lunch in the St. Ann hills. Closer to home, snorkeling in the fish sanctuary and a game of croquet on the lawn are perfect lazy-day pursuits.

What Guests Treasure

Reviewers often describe Jamaica Inn as a place that changes their idea of what a beach hotel can be. The verandahs come up in nearly every review, praised as the best seat in the house for breakfast, reading and sunset drinks. The beach, with its calm water and golden sand, is another constant.

Service is warmly praised: guests love that staff learn their names quickly and that many team members have worked at the inn for years, giving it the feel of a family home. The nightly dinners with live music, the afternoon tea ritual and the absence of TVs are cherished as part of the charm. Many guests mention returning again and again. Plenty choose it for anniversaries after honeymooning here.

Good to Know

  • Children aged ten and older are welcome, so it is not strictly kid-free, but the atmosphere is tranquil and predominantly couples.
  • Rooms have no TVs by design; there is one in the main bar for big events.
  • Evenings are smart casual. After 7 pm, men need long trousers, a collared shirt and closed shoes in the bar and dining areas. Women are expected to dress with similar polish, so pack for both of you.
  • Ian Fleming International (OCJ) is only about 15 minutes away for charter and private flights; most US travelers fly into Montego Bay (MBJ), about 1.5 hours away. The inn recommends a pre-booked private transfer.
  • As a rough guide, suites start in the mid-hundreds of dollars per night, with cottages climbing past $1,000.
  • Use the inn's recommended drivers rather than hailing taxis. Expect persistent vendors around Dunn's River Falls and Ocho Rios town; a firm, friendly no works.
  • If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Jamaica, since mosquito-borne illnesses occur here.

Insider tips

  1. For maximum privacy, book a one-bedroom cottage or Suite 21, both with plunge pools.
  2. Ask about taking the inn's fishing boat to Dunn's River Falls to arrive by sea and skip the bus crowds.
  3. Check the inn's turtle hatching calendar if you are visiting in nesting season.
  4. Pack a collared shirt and closed shoes; the evening dress code is genuinely observed.

FAQ

Jamaica Inn questions, answered

Is Jamaica Inn kid-free?

Not strictly. Jamaica Inn welcomes children aged ten and older, but the mood is calm, grown-up and overwhelmingly couples. The absence of TVs, the evening dress code and the slow pace mean it rarely feels family-oriented, making it a strong choice for honeymooners who want serenity without a formal kid-free policy.

Is Jamaica Inn all-inclusive?

It is not an all-inclusive resort by default, but it offers a range of meal plans from à la carte all the way to all-inclusive. That flexibility lets you choose between dining on property every night or exploring Ocho Rios restaurants. Ask the reservations team which plan best fits your stay and budget.

What is the dress code at Jamaica Inn?

Days are relaxed beachwear. After 7 pm, though, gentlemen are asked to wear long trousers, a collared shirt and closed-toe shoes in the main bar, cocktail terrace and dining room; flip-flops are not permitted. Women are asked to dress with similar polish. Many couples enjoy getting dressed up for dinner under the stars.

How do we get to Jamaica Inn from the US?

Most travelers fly nonstop into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, about 1.5 hours away by car. Ian Fleming International (OCJ), about 15 minutes away, handles smaller charter and private flights. Kingston's airport is also about 1.5 hours away. The inn recommends booking a private transfer in advance.

Which room should we book for our honeymoon?

For privacy, choose a one-bedroom cottage with its own infinity plunge pool or Suite 21 on its secluded point. For classic Jamaica Inn charm, a Premier or Deluxe Verandah Suite puts you steps from the beach with a large furnished verandah. The Cowdray Suite is a lovely choice if sunset views are a priority.
