Sparkling Hill Resort is the Okanagan Valley's spa honeymoon: a kid-free resort on a granite ridge above Okanagan Lake in Vernon, built around one of the largest hot and cold spa circuits in Canada. The resort and all its restaurants are 16 and over, so evenings are quiet and the pools are calm. It sits about half an hour from Kelowna's airport, which makes it easy to pair with a few days of winery hopping farther south.
The KurSpa is the reason to come. It runs on a European cycle of hot, cold and rest: seven saunas and steam rooms, three pools including a heated outdoor infinity pool looking over the lake, a Kneipp foot circuit, a chilled igloo room and a cryo cold chamber. Swarovski crystal details run through the building, a nod to the family behind the resort. Dinner at PeakFine comes with the same lake view.
It suits couples who want a wellness break that still feels like a celebration, with a glass of Okanagan wine at the end of the day. It is less suited to couples who want a historic inn or a vineyard setting outside the window.
Highlights at a glance
- Kid-free resort and restaurants for guests 16 and over
- Seven saunas and steam rooms plus three pools
- Heated outdoor infinity pool above Okanagan Lake
- Couples Escape package with dinner, breakfast and spa credit
- About 30 minutes from Kelowna airport
Why Couples Love Sparkling Hill
The setting is the first surprise. The resort is perched high on its ridge, so the lake fills the windows of the public spaces, the pool deck and the Panorama Sauna. In winter the outdoor infinity pool steams against the snow. In summer the lake is a deep blue and the valley's orchards and vineyards are a short drive away.
The second is the quiet. Because no one under 16 is allowed in the resort or its restaurants, the spa feels like a retreat rather than a family water park. Couples can move from steam room to pool to lounger for an entire afternoon without the bustle that a big resort usually brings.
The third is the scale of the spa itself. Few hotels in North America offer this many heat and cold experiences under one roof.
Rooms and Packages to Book
Rooms are open-plan and modern, with big windows. The top category is a set of penthouses for couples who want more space. Ask for a lake-facing room when you book, since the view is much of the point.
The most useful starting point for a honeymoon is the resort's Couples Escape package. It is a two-night stay that includes a welcome drink each, a three-course dinner for two every night, a European-style breakfast at PeakFine each morning, a spa credit of $150 per person, unlimited wellness classes, Wi-Fi and valet parking. Taxes are extra. For longer stays, the resort runs five-day and seven-day wellness programs.
Rates move a lot with season and demand. As a very rough guide, expect several hundred US dollars a night for two before packages, more in summer and over holidays. Treat that as approximate.
The KurSpa Circuit
The spa is reserved for overnight guests and open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Steam rooms and saunas open at 2 p.m. Arrive in your robe and slippers, since street clothes and outdoor shoes are not allowed inside.
- Saunas: a Finnish sauna, a Panorama Sauna facing the lake and a pine-scented Herbal Sauna.
- Steam rooms: Crystal Steam with Swarovski accents, Salt Steam, Rose Steam and the long, gentle Aqua Meditation Steam.
- Pools: the heated outdoor infinity pool, an indoor hot pool with jets and an indoor serenity pool with underwater music.
- Cool-downs: the Kneipp circuit, a silver-tiled igloo and themed experience showers.
The saunas switch to a clothing-optional European Hour from 9 to 10 p.m. If that is not your style, plan your circuit earlier. Treatments run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and should be booked ahead.
Why guests fall for it
Food, Wine and the Valley
PeakFine is the main restaurant, with lake views and a menu that draws on local produce and wines. Gerni's Farmhouse is the more casual option, Barrique and Java serves coffee and drinks and room service is available when you would rather not change out of your robe.
The resort's position at the north end of the valley puts some wine country close by. It is an easy morning drive south to the bigger clusters of wineries around Lake Country, Kelowna and West Kelowna. Choose a designated driver, a tour company or a car service. The roads are scenic, the pours generous and the police take impaired driving seriously.
Outside the spa, the resort lists hiking, biking and lake activities in summer. Silver Star Mountain, a family-friendly ski area above Vernon, is close for a winter day on the slopes.
Getting There
Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is about 30 minutes from the resort by car. It has connections through Vancouver, Calgary and Seattle, plus some seasonal US flights. A rental car is the simplest way to see the valley, since wineries, beaches and towns are spread out.
From Vancouver the drive takes most of a day through the mountains, which is beautiful in summer and more demanding in winter, when snow tires are required on many BC highways. Penticton (YYF) is an option if you plan to spend most of your trip in the south Okanagan, though it is a longer drive to Vernon.
The resort is up a winding road on the ridge. Allow extra time in winter and check conditions before you set off.
Is It Worth It?
For a spa-focused honeymoon in Canada, it is one of the strongest choices. The Couples Escape makes the numbers easier to judge because dinner and breakfast are folded in. The combination of lake views, a large heat-and-cold circuit and a kid-free policy is rare.
It is not a vineyard inn. If your dream is waking up among the vines, book a winery guest suite or a small inn on the Naramata Bench and come here for a spa night or two. Couples who prefer warm, historic character may also find the building more modern resort than romantic retreat.
The best plan for many couples is a split stay: two or three nights at Sparkling Hill for the spa, then a few nights in the south of the valley for wine and the lakeshore.
Insider tips
- Book the two-night Couples Escape; dinner, breakfast and a $150 spa credit each are included.
- Request a lake-facing room, since views vary across the building.
- Do your sauna circuit before 9 p.m. if you would rather skip the clothing-optional European Hour.
- Pair it with a few nights farther south for winery stays around Naramata or Oliver.
