Seven Mile Beach, a serious spa and dinner at Blue by Eric Ripert

The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman is the most complete luxury resort on Seven Mile Beach. It is the right pick for couples who want great food and a big spa alongside soft sand and calm water. The resort fronts one of the best stretches of Grand Cayman's famous beach. Across the road, it adds a nine-hole Greg Norman golf course, tennis and the North Sound waterfront.

The headline for many couples is dinner. Blue by Eric Ripert brings the New York chef's seafood-focused cooking to the island. It is one of the most celebrated restaurants in the Caribbean. Five other restaurants and bars cover sushi, steak, Italian and Caribbean menus, so you can eat well for a week without leaving.

This is a big, polished resort with families on site, especially during school holidays. It will not feel like a secret retreat. What it gives you instead is reliability: excellent service, a long list of activities and the easiest access to Grand Cayman's reef, sandbar and restaurant scene. Book an ocean-view room and the beach does the rest.

Why Couples Love the Ritz-Carlton

Seven Mile Beach is the reason most couples choose Grand Cayman. The Ritz-Carlton sits on a lovely section of it. The water is usually flat and clear, the sand is pale and soft and the sunsets line up over the sea every evening.

The resort's scale works in your favor once you know how to use it. There is always another pool, bar or quiet stretch of sand to find. The staff are practiced at birthdays, anniversaries and honeymoon surprises. A quiet word at check-in usually results in a bottle of something cold in your room.

Couples also love the dining. Having Blue by Eric Ripert downstairs means a serious dinner is a short walk from your room. The other restaurants are good enough that you will not need to leave for a meal.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rooms range from resort-view to full ocean-view, with suites and penthouses at the top. For a honeymoon, book an ocean-view room or suite on a higher floor; the view over Seven Mile Beach at sunset is worth the extra cost.

The Ritz-Carlton Suite and the Seven South Penthouse are the splurges, with large living spaces and terraces for private dinners. Club-level rooms, if available for your dates, add a lounge with food and drinks through the day, which can save money on breakfast and evening cocktails.

Avoid the cheapest resort-view rooms if you can. They are comfortable but look over the grounds or road. They make the resort feel more like a big hotel than a beach retreat. Ask at booking which rooms are closest to the quieter end of the beach.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Blue by Eric Ripert is the star, with a refined, seafood-focused tasting menu and a wine list to match. Book it before you arrive, choose a late table and dress up a little. Seven is the steakhouse. Taikun serves sushi and Japanese dishes. Andiamo Circolo Sportivo is relaxed Italian and Saint June has a Caribbean beach-shack feel by the water. Silver Palm is the bar and lounge for a cocktail before dinner.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Grand Cayman is one of the largest on the island, with wellness journeys using 111SKIN and ESPA products. Book a couples treatment after a reef day, then use the relaxation areas before heading to the beach.

An outdoor pool and hot tub sit near the sand. Find a quiet corner of the beach for the afternoons.

Things to Do

Grand Cayman is a water island. Take a boat to the North Sound sandbar to stand among the southern stingrays at Stingray City, ideally on an early trip before the crowds. Snorkel the USS Kittiwake wreck off the north end of Seven Mile Beach, or swim straight off the sand where turtles and parrotfish are common.

On a moonless night, kayak a bioluminescent bay to watch the water glow around your paddles. Visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park to see blue iguanas, then drive out to the quieter East End and North Side for empty beaches and Rum Point.

At the resort, play the nine-hole Greg Norman course, book tennis or join the Ambassadors of the Environment program for a guided nature outing. Camana Bay, the island's waterfront town center, is a short drive for shops and dinner.

Getting There

Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) has nonstop flights from many US cities, including Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, New York and Houston. Flying time from Miami is about an hour and a quarter.

The resort is about 15 to 20 minutes from the airport by car along West Bay Road. Taxis wait outside arrivals and the resort can arrange a private car if you want to be met.

You can manage without a car if you plan to stay mostly on Seven Mile Beach, since taxis and boat tours pick up from the resort. Rent a car for a day or two to explore the East End, Rum Point and the Botanic Park. Driving is on the left. Roads are generally good. Check-in is from 4 p.m.; ask for early access to the pool if you land in the morning.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want top-tier food, a big spa and Seven Mile Beach on the doorstep, yes. The Ritz-Carlton gives you everything in one place. Few resorts in the Caribbean match its restaurant lineup.

It is not cheap. Approximate rates start around $800 to $1,200 a night for entry rooms outside the holidays, with ocean views and suites much higher. Taxes, fees and dining add a lot. Blue by Eric Ripert alone can run several hundred dollars for two with wine. Treat these figures as a rough guide.

Pick elsewhere if you want something small and kid-free in mood. The Kimpton Seafire near the quieter north end of the beach is more relaxed, while Palm Heights is design-led and grown-up. A private villa on the North Side gives total privacy. Mosquitoes appear at dusk; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Insider tips

  1. Reserve Blue by Eric Ripert as soon as you book your room; tables go early.
  2. Pay for an ocean view on a higher floor rather than a resort-view room.
  3. Book Stingray City on the earliest boat for fewer people at the sandbar.
  4. Rent a car for one day to see Rum Point and the East End.
