Exuma vs Harbour Island

Boat days through 360 cays, or a pink-sand beach and a village you cross by golf cart.

The short answer

Choose Exuma if your dream days happen on a boat: snorkeling Thunderball Grotto, swimming at sandbars and stopping wherever the water looks bluest, with quiet evenings at marina bars. Choose Harbour Island if you want one beautiful beach plus a charming village, boutique hotels and good restaurants, all reached by golf cart. Exuma is the adventure. Harbour Island is the stylish, social beach break with long lunches and no driving.

Exuma and Harbour Island are both Out Islands of the Bahamas, quieter and more beautiful than Nassau. Both regularly top honeymoon wish lists. They share a climate, a currency pegged to the dollar and a love of conch salad. Yet they offer very different trips.

Exuma is a chain of more than 360 cays strung about 130 miles along the edge of a deep ocean trench. Very little of it is developed. Great Exuma holds the airport and the small town of George Town, while the cays to the north are a scatter of empty islands, private estates and a national park reachable only by water. Days revolve around a boat and a captain.

Harbour Island is tiny, about three miles long and half a mile wide, just off the northern tip of Eleuthera. One side has Dunmore Town, a pastel village of clapboard cottages and picket fences. The other has Pink Sands Beach, where crushed red shell tints the sand a soft rose. Everyone gets around by golf cart.

One is a water world. The other is a beach village with style.

Water World or Beach Village

In Exuma, the beach chair is optional. The shallow, sheltered water on the banks side stays calm and outrageously clear for much of the year. A boat day feels like a private expedition because so many cays have no buildings at all. You might start at Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, snorkel Thunderball Grotto, the cave from the 1965 James Bond film, then picnic on a sandbar that disappears at high tide.

Harbour Island keeps everything within a few minutes. You spend the morning on Pink Sands Beach, ride five minutes into Dunmore Town for lunch and are back in the water by two. An offshore reef keeps the water near shore gentle on most days, though the Atlantic side can get waves when the wind picks up.

The difference is movement. Exuma rewards couples who want to explore and are happy spending hours on the water. Harbour Island suits couples who want to stay put, slow down and let the day unfold between beach, lunch and a sunset drink.

Places to Stay

Exuma's stays span a wide range. On Great Exuma, Grand Isle Resort on Emerald Bay has big hillside villas with kitchens, a beach club and a spa, from roughly $500 a night (approximate). Up in the cays, Staniel Cay Yacht Club rents waterfront cottages from around $450 a night (approximate), with Thunderball Grotto and the pigs minutes away. Fowl Cay Resort occupies its own private island with a handful of villas and a boat for each, typically from around $2,000 a night (approximate).

Harbour Island's hotels are small, often under forty rooms. Most sit on or above Pink Sands Beach. The Dunmore has cottages tucked into the dune with a clubby restaurant, typically from around $800 a night. Pink Sands Resort spreads colorful cottages through tropical gardens, from around $900. In town, The Rock House has a pool terrace over the harbor and starts nearer $500 (all approximate). Villa rentals with a golf cart are popular for longer stays.

For a week in Exuma, many couples split three nights in the cays with three on Great Exuma.

Food and After Dark

Harbour Island wins on dining. For such a small island the food is very good, from polished dinners at The Dunmore, Pink Sands and The Rock House to long lunches at Sip Sip on a bluff above the beach. On Bay Street, stands chop conch salad to order with lime, peppers and onion. Friday and Saturday nights get lively at harbor bars and hotel lounges. Expect prices near New York or Miami levels, since nearly everything is shipped in.

Exuma is more casual. George Town has a handful of restaurants and a supermarket. On Stocking Island, Chat 'N' Chill serves conch salad and cold Kalik with your feet in the sand, plus a Sunday pig roast that is half party, half community gathering. In the cays, eating happens mostly at marina restaurants and resort dining rooms, where the other guests may have arrived by yacht.

Try a Sky Juice, made with gin, coconut water and condensed milk, in either place. In Exuma, order a picnic lunch for every boat day.

Flights and Getting Around

Both islands take some planning. Exuma International Airport (GGT) on Great Exuma has historically had nonstop flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta and Charlotte, some only on weekends or in high season. Otherwise fly to Nassau and take a 40-minute hop. Small charters fly direct to Staniel Cay from Nassau and South Florida. On Great Exuma you will want a rental car for part of the stay, driving on the left. Between cays, you need a boat.

For Harbour Island, fly to North Eleuthera (ELH), which has some seasonal US nonstops, or connect via Nassau with a 20-minute flight. A short taxi takes you to Three Island Dock, where water taxis cross in about ten minutes. Bahamas Ferries also runs a fast ferry from Nassau in a couple of hours. On the island, a golf cart is all you need.

Out Island schedules shift from year to year, so check current routes. Carry cash in both places for water taxis, conch stands and small shops.

Costs Compared

Neither is a budget honeymoon. Harbour Island is among the pricier spots in the Bahamas, with beachfront hotels running from several hundred to over a thousand dollars a night in high season (approximate). Dining and drinks add up quickly, though you save on transport because a golf cart covers everything.

Exuma's room prices are more varied. You can stay in a rental cottage or a villa with a kitchen for less than a Harbour Island beachfront room, or spend far more on a private-island resort. The big extra is boats. A private captain for a full day runs roughly $800 to well over $1,500 for two (approximate). Most couples want at least one or two such days. Water taxis and fuel for rental boats add more.

In practice, the two land in a similar range for a well-planned week. Exuma lets you shift money between rooms and boat days. Harbour Island spends it on beachfront comfort and dinners.

Seasons and Weather Watch

The calendars match closely. December through May is the main season for both, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and dry, sunny days. April and May are often ideal, with warmer water and fewer crowds than at Christmas or spring break. Winter cold fronts can bring a few cool, windy days, so pack a light layer for January evenings.

Wind matters more in Exuma because it decides whether boats go out. A breezy front can cancel a snorkel day, so leave slack in your plan and prioritize calm forecasts for your big boat outing. On Harbour Island, a windy day just means bigger waves on the Atlantic side and a longer lunch.

August through October is the core of hurricane season. Many Harbour Island hotels and restaurants close for several weeks around September and October. Some smaller Exuma lodges do the same while boat operators trim schedules. November is a pleasant shoulder month in both, though check what has reopened.

Pairing Them on One Trip

Combining Exuma and Harbour Island makes a lovely contrast: boat adventures first, then pink sand and good dinners to finish. There is no direct link, so most couples route through Nassau. Fly from Exuma to Nassau, then take a short flight to North Eleuthera or the fast ferry to Dunmore Town. Allow most of a day for the transfer.

A balanced nine-night honeymoon might be three nights in the Exuma Cays around Staniel Cay, two on Great Exuma and four on Harbour Island. If you have only a week, pick one. Exuma needs at least five nights to justify the boat days, while Harbour Island is happiest at four or five.

Harbour Island also pairs neatly with Eleuthera itself, just across the harbor, where the Glass Window Bridge and Preacher's Cave make an easy day trip. Exuma pairs with Nassau if you want a few nights of bigger resorts before heading out to the cays.

FAQ

Exuma vs Harbour Island: your questions

Is Exuma or Harbour Island better for a honeymoon?

Exuma is better for adventurous couples who love boat days, snorkeling and empty sandbars. Harbour Island is better for couples who want a single beautiful beach, boutique hotels, good restaurants and a charming village. If neither of you enjoys boats, Harbour Island is the easier choice.

Is the sand on Harbour Island really pink?

Yes, though it is a soft rose rather than bright pink. Crushed bits of red shell from tiny marine organisms tint the sand. The color shows best at the waterline in early morning or late afternoon light. Photos often exaggerate it, but in person it is lovely.

Can we see the swimming pigs from Harbour Island?

Not easily. The best-known swimming pigs are at Big Major Cay in the Exuma Cays, far to the south. Fast boat day trips run from Nassau, but the crossing is long and can be rough. If the pigs and Thunderball Grotto matter to you, base yourselves in Exuma.

How many nights do we need?

Plan five to seven nights in Exuma so you have room for weather and at least two full boat days, ideally split between the cays and Great Exuma. Four or five nights suits Harbour Island, which is small and relaxing. Combining both works well in nine or ten nights.

Do we need a car in Exuma or on Harbour Island?

On Great Exuma, a rental car helps for reaching beaches and restaurants; traffic keeps left. In the cays you will rely on boats. On Harbour Island, cars are few and everyone uses golf carts, so book one when you book your room, especially for holiday weeks.
