Beach Bohemia or Resort Polish
Negril has always marched to its own beat. Along Seven Mile Beach you float in gentle surf, eat jerk chicken from a roadside drum grill and walk between beach bars during the day. On the West End, small cliff hotels sit above coves so clear you can see the bottom from your terrace. Music is everywhere and nothing happens quickly. Many couples arrive planning to do a lot and end up happily doing very little.
Montego Bay is more polished. Its best resorts are self-contained worlds with butlers, spas and several restaurants, built for couples who want everything handled. Round Hill's 100-acre peninsula has hosted glamorous guests since 1953, while the all-inclusives in the Rose Hall area deliver big pools and easy days. In town, the Hip Strip has shops, people-watching and persistent vendors.
Neither is better in absolute terms. Negril suits couples who like character and a little rough edge. MoBay suits couples who want comfort first and Jamaica in measured doses.
Sunsets, Sand and Snorkeling
Negril wins on sunsets, hands down. Its western position means the sun drops straight into the sea. Locals and visitors pause to watch. Rick's Café on the West End is famous for cliff divers leaping into the water at dusk, though it gets packed. For a quieter evening, book a cliff-top table at your own hotel or a smaller bar.
The swimming is varied too. Seven Mile Beach has calm, shallow water protected by offshore reefs, ideal for kayaking and snorkeling. On the cliffs you swim from ladders into deep coves. Established spots let brave couples jump. Check depth with locals and never jump after drinking.
Montego Bay's beaches are mostly resort beaches, pleasant and calm but rarely as long as Seven Mile. Its water highlights are the Montego Bay Marine Park, which protects reefs, seagrass and mangroves off the coast. Then there is the Glistening Waters lagoon near Falmouth, where every movement sparkles with bioluminescence after dark. Go on a moonless night if you can.
Honeymoon Hotels in Each
In Negril, the choice is beach or cliffs. On Seven Mile Beach, Couples Swept Away is a kid-free, couples-only all-inclusive on 19 acres of gardens, with suites steps from the sand, a large sports complex and diving included. On the West End, Rockhouse Hotel has thatched villas above Pristine Cove and a 60-foot infinity pool carved into the rock. It is not all-inclusive, which makes it easy to try local restaurants. Beyond these, the beach is lined with all-inclusives and the cliffs with small guesthouses.
Montego Bay offers more top-end variety. Sandals Royal Caribbean brought overwater suites to the Caribbean, with glass-floored villas off its own private island. It has been redesigned to reopen as Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay, so confirm its opening date. Round Hill Hotel & Villas offers the Pineapple House by the water and hillside villas with their own pools and staff, plus afternoon tea.
For overwater villas or private pools, MoBay is the place. For a cliff hotel or a long beach, choose Negril.
Transfers and Getting Around
Both start at Sangster International Airport (MBJ), which has nonstop flights from dozens of US cities. That is where the similarity ends.
From MBJ, many Montego Bay resorts are only 10 to 30 minutes away, so you can trade the jet bridge for a beach chair before lunch. On a five-night honeymoon, that matters. VIP arrival services can speed you through immigration for a fee. Organized tours include transport, so day trips are simple.
Negril is about 90 minutes away by road along the coast. Many all-inclusives include transfers. Otherwise book a private driver in advance. Once there, Norman Manley Boulevard runs the length of Seven Mile Beach and West End Road follows the cliffs. Licensed taxis and hotel drivers are the easiest way around. Walking the beach by day is part of the fun, but take a taxi after dark rather than walking long stretches.
In both places, agree on taxi fares in advance if there is no meter.
Days Out and Adventures
Montego Bay is the more flexible base. Inland, you can drift down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft poled by a local guide or tour Rose Hall Great House, a restored 18th-century plantation mansion with famous legends. The Glistening Waters lagoon makes a lovely night outing. Sunset catamaran cruises run along the coast. Because MoBay sits midway along the north coast, day trips to Negril or the waterfalls of Ocho Rios are both realistic.
Negril's excursions lean south and inland. YS Falls has a series of cascades with natural swimming pools in the countryside. Black River safaris spot crocodiles among the mangroves. The Negril Lighthouse at the westernmost point gives big sea views. Most days, though, the activity is the water itself: snorkeling, kayaking, a sunset catamaran with rum punch and reggae.
If you want a different outing every day, MoBay suits you. If you want one great beach and a slow rhythm, Negril does.
Seasons and Costs
The two share a calendar. Mid-December through April is driest and busiest, with warm, breezy days and calm seas. Rates peak over the holidays and in February. May and June are excellent shoulder months with good weather and better value. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk from August to October, when rain and humidity rise and prices fall. Travel insurance is wise for late-summer and fall dates.
Budgets overlap widely. Negril's beach all-inclusives and cliff hotels cover a range from moderate to fairly high. Eating out at local spots keeps costs down if you stay somewhere not all-inclusive. Montego Bay stretches higher at the top, with overwater villas and staffed private-pool villas among the priciest stays in Jamaica.
In either place, carry small US bills for tips if your resort is not all-inclusive. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for evenings and water shoes for rocky entries.
Doing Both in One Trip
This is one of the easiest splits in the Caribbean. Fly into MBJ, transfer 90 minutes to Negril for four nights of beach and cliff sunsets, then return to Montego Bay for two or three nights in a polished resort near the airport. You end the trip close to your flight, which takes the stress out of departure day.
If you want to go further, Ocho Rios lies about an hour and a half east of MoBay along the north coast highway, with waterfalls, jungle pools and old-world hotels. A ten-night honeymoon could run Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios without ever changing airports.
Within Negril itself, consider a mini-split: a few nights on Seven Mile Beach at an all-inclusive, then a few on the West End cliffs. You see both sides of the town without another long transfer. Whatever you choose, confirm that each hotel has reopened after Hurricane Melissa.
