The short answer

Montego Bay is Jamaica's easiest honeymoon, with many resorts 10 to 30 minutes from Sangster International (MBJ), which makes it ideal for short trips. Mid-December through April is driest. May and June bring good weather at better rates. Stays range from couples-only all-inclusives to Round Hill's villas with private pools and staff, so budgets run from moderate to splurge. Confirm your resort's status after Hurricane Melissa. Don't miss a night swim in the glowing Glistening Waters lagoon near Falmouth.

Best for
  • Couples with only a few nights
  • Fans of couples-only all-inclusives
  • Pairs who want easy day trips
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a remote, undeveloped beach
  • Persistent vendors would spoil your mood

Montego Bay is where most Jamaica love stories begin, simply because this is where the planes land. But MoBay, as everyone calls it, is far more than a transit point. Strung along the island's northwest coast, it is home to some of the Caribbean's most polished resorts, from grand old villa colonies where Hollywood royalty once vacationed to modern all-inclusives with suites built out over the sea. Many are within half an hour of the airport, which means you can trade the jet bridge for a beach chair before lunch.

That convenience is a gift for honeymooners with limited time off, but MoBay also rewards the curious. Inland, rivers wind through green hills, just right for drifting on a bamboo raft. Along the coast, a lagoon near Falmouth glows with bioluminescence after dark. Historic great houses recall the island's complex past. In town, jerk smoke drifts from roadside grills. Base yourselves here and you can see a remarkable slice of Jamaica, then retreat each evening to a private terrace and a rum punch at sunset.

Why Honeymoon in Montego Bay

Ease is the headline. Sangster International is Jamaica's busiest airport, with nonstop flights from dozens of US cities. The short transfer means more time together and less time in a van. That matters on a five-night honeymoon.

The resort scene is also exceptionally strong and varied. Expect couples-only all-inclusives with butler service, refined independent hotels with deep histories and private villas with staff who cook your breakfast. And because Montego Bay sits midway along the north coast, day trips to Negril's beaches or the waterfalls of Ocho Rios are both realistic. It is the most flexible base on the island.

When to Go

The sunniest, driest and busiest months run from mid-December through April, when temperatures are warm but comfortable and the sea is usually calm. Book early for holidays and February.

May and June are excellent shoulder months with good weather and better rates. Hurricane season runs from June through November, peaking from August to October; those months bring more rain and humidity but also the lowest prices. Travel insurance is a good idea for late-summer and fall trips.

Western Jamaica was struck by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. Several resorts closed for rebuilding and redesigns. Many have since reopened and others are scheduled to return. Always confirm a property's status when you book.

Where to Stay

Two very different resorts top our honeymoon list.

Sandals Royal Caribbean is the resort that brought overwater suites to the Caribbean, with glass-floored villas off its own private island. It has been redesigned to reopen under a new name, Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay, so confirm its opening date when you book. Expect couples-only, all-inclusive ease just minutes from the airport, with overwater villas that add private plunge pools.

Round Hill Hotel & Villas, west of town on a 100-acre peninsula, has hosted glamorous guests since 1953. Stay in the Ralph Lauren–styled Pineapple House by the water or in a hillside villa with its own pool and staff. Do not miss afternoon tea.

Between and beyond them, the coast holds large all-inclusives in the Rose Hall area, boutique hotels near town and countless private villas.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Float in the bioluminescent Glistening Waters lagoon near Falmouth, where every movement makes the water sparkle.
  • Tour Rose Hall Great House, a restored 18th-century plantation mansion with famous legends.
  • Snorkel the Montego Bay Marine Park, which protects reefs, seagrass and mangroves right off the coast.
  • Drift down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft poled by a local guide.
  • Take a sunset catamaran cruise along the coast with music and rum punch.
  • Wander the Hip Strip in town for shops, people-watching and beach bars.

Getting There & Around

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is the main gateway to Jamaica for US travelers. It has nonstop flights from many cities on the East Coast, in the Midwest and in Texas, plus seasonal service from farther afield. Many resorts are 10 to 30 minutes away.

Most all-inclusives include airport transfers. VIP arrival services can speed you through immigration for a fee. For getting around, hotel-arranged drivers and licensed taxis are the norm; agree on the fare in advance if there is no meter. Organized tours include transportation, which makes day trips to Negril, Ocho Rios or the rivers inland straightforward.

Food & Drink

Montego Bay is jerk country. Roadside jerk centers smoke chicken and pork over pimento wood, served with festival and hard-dough bread; it is the best-value meal you will have all week. Look also for curry goat, oxtail, escovitch fish and Jamaican patties.

Resort dining is diverse, from Italian and Indian to elegant Caribbean tasting menus, but do leave the property at least once. Fresh seafood by the water, a rum tasting featuring Jamaica's famous estates and a cup of Blue Mountain coffee all belong on your list. Toast your honeymoon with a classic rum punch. On a hot afternoon, try a cold Ting, a tangy grapefruit soda.

Honeymoon Tips

Because the airport is so close, Montego Bay works beautifully for shorter trips or as a final stop before flying home. Many couples spend a few nights in Negril or Ocho Rios first, then end in MoBay to minimize travel on departure day.

If you are booking an overwater villa or a villa with a private pool, reserve early; these rooms are limited and sell out for peak dates. Book Glistening Waters on a moonless or new-moon night if possible for the most vivid glow.

Carry small US bills for tips if your resort is not all-inclusive. Outside the resort, expect friendly but persistent offers of tours, taxis and ganja on the Hip Strip; a smile and a firm no is all it takes.

FAQ

Montego Bay honeymoon FAQ

Is Montego Bay a good place for a honeymoon?

Yes. Montego Bay offers Jamaica's easiest access, with many resorts just minutes from Sangster International Airport, plus a wide range of romantic stays, from overwater villas to historic villa resorts. It is also a convenient base for day trips to rivers, lagoons, Negril and Ocho Rios.

Are there overwater bungalows in Jamaica?

Yes. Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay introduced overwater suites to the Caribbean, with glass floors and hammocks over the sea. The resort has been redesigned to reopen as Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay, with overwater villas that include private plunge pools. Sandals also offers overwater bungalows on Jamaica's south coast.

How far are Montego Bay resorts from the airport?

Many Montego Bay resorts are only 10 to 30 minutes from Sangster International Airport (MBJ), depending on location and traffic. Resorts farther west, such as Round Hill, take around half an hour. That short transfer is one of the main reasons couples choose MoBay, especially for shorter honeymoons.
