Little Polynesian Resort is the most romantic small hotel on Rarotonga and the one to choose if you want a kid-free beach base with a lagoon you can snorkel from your room. There are only 14 rooms, a mix of thatched Beachfront Bungalows and Garden Studios, set right on Titikaveka Beach on the island's quiet south coast.
It suits couples who want to spend most of their time at the hotel. The lagoon in front is clear and calm, with coral and fish a short swim from the sand. A saltwater infinity pool sits at the edge of the beach. The restaurant serves classic dishes with a Polynesian twist and has earned a strong local reputation, so there is little reason to go far for dinner.
Titikaveka is quieter than Muri, with fewer restaurants and less traffic. That is the point. You can still be at the Muri lagoon or the Saturday market in Avarua within about 20 minutes, but evenings here are peaceful, lit by the sunset over the reef and the lamps along the beach. Book a Beachfront Bungalow if you can, since that sound of the water at night is what most couples remember.

Why Couples Love Little Polynesian
The small scale and the setting do most of the work. With only 14 rooms, the resort is intimate even at full occupancy. The kid-free policy keeps it calm. Many guests are honeymooners or couples celebrating anniversaries.
Titikaveka has some of the clearest water around Rarotonga. Step from the beach into a lagoon where coral gardens and tropical fish start just a few meters out. Snorkeling here is good enough that you may skip organized trips altogether.
The resort's thatched rooms and gardens feel traditional, though the interiors are modern and comfortable. Couples often describe a rhythm of morning swims, long breakfasts, afternoons by the infinity pool and drinks at the bar while the light fades. It is a hotel built for doing very little, very well.
Rooms to Book
There are two room types, both designed for two people.
- Beachfront Bungalows sit right on the sand, many with thatched roofs and terraces that face the lagoon. You hear the reef from bed.
- Garden Studios are set back among tropical plantings, quieter and a little more affordable but still a few steps from the beach.
For a honeymoon, book a Beachfront Bungalow. The terrace is where you will spend early mornings and late evenings. The view straight over the lagoon is the reason to stay on this coast. Garden Studios are a good choice if you plan to be out exploring most days or want to stretch your budget over a longer stay. With only 14 rooms, book well ahead for June to October and the Christmas period.
Food, Drink and Wellness
The Little Polynesian Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with relaxed poolside service. The kitchen takes classic dishes and gives them a Polynesian twist, with fresh local fish, tropical fruit, coconut and island vegetables. It has been recognized locally as one of the best hotel restaurants in the Cook Islands. Book a table near the pool for sunset.
The onsite bar is small and friendly, with cocktails built on local fruit. For a change of scene, Muri's restaurants are a short drive away. The Muri Night Market offers cheap, tasty dinners.
There is no full spa at the resort. Ask at reception about arranging a massage, ideally on your terrace or after a morning in the water.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
The lagoon in front of the resort is the main activity. Bring or borrow snorkeling gear and swim out at high tide.
- Paddleboard or kayak across Muri Lagoon to its small motu islands.
- Hike the Cross-Island Track past Te Rua Manga, the Needle, to Wigmore's Waterfall. Wear proper shoes and go with a guide if it has rained.
- Visit Punanga Nui Market in Avarua on a Saturday morning for food, crafts and music.
- Book an island night show with dinner, drumming and dance.
- Snorkel the Aroa Marine Reserve on the west coast.
One of you might want a full-day hike while the other prefers the beach. Rarotonga is small enough that splitting up for a morning is easy. Rent a scooter or use the round-island bus.
Getting There
Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) has direct flights from Los Angeles, as well as frequent connections from Auckland, Sydney and other Pacific hubs. The resort is about 25 minutes by car on the island's main coast road. An airport transfer can be arranged when you book.
The island's single coast road makes navigation easy. Scooter rental is common, but take it slowly and wear a helmet. Swim only in the lagoon, never near the reef passages, where currents can be strong. Mosquitoes are around, especially after rain. Dengue occurs in the Cook Islands at times. Pack repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for the Cook Islands.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, for couples who want a small, kid-free hotel with excellent snorkeling and good food at the door. Little Polynesian is not cheap for Rarotonga, but you get a beachfront bungalow, a strong restaurant and a peaceful lagoon for much less than Aitutaki's top resorts.
It is less suited to couples who want lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance. For that, base yourselves in Muri. If you want a full spa or a large pool scene, a bigger resort on the island fits better. Couples who also want overwater bungalows can add a few nights on Aitutaki, a 50-minute flight away. A popular plan is four nights at Little Polynesian followed by four on Aitutaki.
Insider tips
- Book a Beachfront Bungalow for a terrace right over the lagoon.
- Snorkel at high tide when the water is deepest and clearest.
- Combine four nights here with four on Aitutaki for a balanced honeymoon.
- Reserve a poolside table for dinner on your first night.
