Hotel Le Mahana is the beach hotel on Huahine: 33 air-conditioned bungalows on Avea Bay, at the quiet southern end of the island, facing one of the best stretches of sand in the Society Islands. It is a relaxed, mid-priced three-star hotel rather than a luxury resort and that is the point. You get white sand, a clear lagoon, a coral garden at the end of the jetty and a pool, at a fraction of the price of a Bora Bora overwater villa.

Huahine itself is the Society Island for couples who want French Polynesia without the honeymoon crowds. There are no big resorts and very little traffic, just green mountains, small villages and the ancient marae of Maeva. Le Mahana gives you the beach side of the island, with Fare and the archaeological sites a scenic drive away.

It suits couples who want a laid-back beach stay of three or four nights, ideally paired with a splurge on Bora Bora or Taha'a. It is not for those who want overwater bungalows, a spa or several restaurants.

Highlights at a glance

  • 33 air-conditioned bungalows on Avea Bay
  • Deluxe Beach bungalows directly on the sand
  • Coral garden at the foot of the jetty
  • Free kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear
  • Pool, beach bar and lagoon picnic tours

Why Couples Love Le Mahana

The beach is the star. Avea Bay has a long curve of white sand lined with coconut palms and the lagoon in front is calm, shallow and clear for most of the year. A coral garden sits right at the foot of the hotel's jetty, so you can grab a mask and see fish within minutes of waking up.

Couples also like the scale and the mood. With 33 bungalows, the hotel never feels crowded and the team has a warm reputation: the hotel received Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice awards in 2022 and 2024. Sunsets over the bay are a nightly event. Days are unstructured, with kayaking, paddleboarding, reading under a palm and a swim in the pool when the lagoon is too warm. Sailboats often anchor in the bay, which adds to the picture at dusk.

Bungalows to Book

Le Mahana has four bungalow types, all in a Polynesian style with air conditioning.

  • Deluxe Beach bungalows sit directly on the sand and are the ones the hotel markets to honeymooners. They start at about 42,900 CFP a night.
  • Lagoon Front bungalows have panoramic lagoon views but are semi-detached and sleep up to four, which suits families better. Also from about 42,900 CFP.
  • Deluxe Lagoon View bungalows are about 15 steps from the beach, from about 35,900 CFP.
  • Garden bungalows are semi-detached and the least expensive, from about 29,900 CFP.

For a honeymoon, book a Deluxe Beach bungalow. Being on the sand, rather than behind it, is what makes the stay. Rates vary by season and a tourist tax of 200 CFP per person per night is paid at the hotel. In US dollars, expect roughly $290 to $420 a night, approximate.

Food, Drink and Activities

The hotel has a combined restaurant and bar serving Polynesian specialties alongside more familiar dishes, indoors or out by the beach. Expect fresh fish, poisson cru in coconut milk and a cocktail menu built for sunset. It is the only restaurant within walking distance, so you will eat most meals here, though Fare and a few roadside spots are a drive away.

Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, masks, snorkels and fins are free for guests, as are the pool, beach towels and loungers. Paid excursions include a 4x4 island tour, guided hikes, guided quad tours, scuba diving and big-game fishing. The highlight for many couples is an outrigger canoe tour of the lagoon with a picnic served in the water. Excursion operators pick you up at the hotel.

Things to Do on Huahine

Huahine is really two islands, Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti, joined by a small bridge and a road loops around both. Rent a car or scooter for a day. Drive north to Maeva, where the remains of ancient marae temples line the lake and the hillside and visit the stone fish traps that are still in use. Stop at the sacred blue-eyed eels of Faie, then continue to Fare for its waterfront and food trucks.

On the way back, pull over at the viewpoints above the bays and visit a vanilla farm or pearl farm if one is open. If one of you prefers to stay in the water, the lagoon off Avea Bay offers some of the island's best snorkeling. Surfers sometimes find waves at the passes, but only for experienced riders. Mosquitoes appear at dusk, so pack repellent.

Getting There

Air Tahiti flies from Papeete (PPT) to Huahine (HUH) in about 40 minutes and Huahine is also a short hop from Bora Bora and Raiatea, which makes it easy to slot into an island-hopping trip. The airport is near Fare in the north and Le Mahana is on the south side of the island, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car. Ask the hotel to arrange a transfer when you book, or pick up a rental car at the airport.

Inter-island ferries also connect Huahine with Tahiti, Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora for travelers with more time. Bring repellent and reef-safe sunscreen. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for French Polynesia, since mosquito-borne illnesses occur in the islands.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a real beach and a calm, friendly hotel, yes. Le Mahana costs a fraction of the Bora Bora resorts, the beach is better than many of theirs and the free water sports keep extra costs down. It works especially well as the quiet chapter of a longer trip.

Pick elsewhere if you want overwater bungalows, which do not exist on Huahine, or a resort with a spa, room service and several restaurants. The hotel is a three-star property, so furnishings are comfortable rather than luxurious and you will rely on one restaurant for most meals. Couples who want to be close to Fare and the archaeological sites may prefer a base in the north. For a sunny, barefoot few days on one of the loveliest bays in the Society Islands, it is a strong choice.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Deluxe Beach bungalow; it is the only category directly on the sand.
  2. Rent a car for one day to loop both islands and see the marae at Maeva.
  3. Snorkel the coral garden early in the morning, when the water is calmest.
  4. Book the outrigger canoe tour with a lagoon picnic for a relaxed day on the water.

FAQ

Hotel Le Mahana questions, answered

Does Hotel Le Mahana have overwater bungalows?

No. Le Mahana has 33 bungalows on or near the beach, but there are no overwater bungalows on Huahine. That keeps prices lower than on Bora Bora. Many couples spend three or four nights here and then add a few nights in an overwater villa on Bora Bora, Taha'a or Moorea.

Which bungalow is best for a honeymoon at Le Mahana?

The Deluxe Beach bungalow is the one to book. It sits directly on the sand and is the category the hotel promotes to honeymooners. Lagoon Front bungalows have wide views but are semi-detached and sized for families. Deluxe Lagoon View bungalows, about 15 steps from the beach, are a good value alternative.

What activities are free at Le Mahana?

Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, masks, snorkels and fins are free for guests, along with the pool, beach towels and loungers. The coral garden at the foot of the jetty is right there for snorkeling. Paid excursions include island 4x4 tours, hikes, quad tours, outrigger canoe trips with a lagoon picnic, diving and fishing.

How far is Le Mahana from Huahine airport?

The airport is near Fare in the north, while Le Mahana sits on Avea Bay in the south, roughly 30 to 40 minutes away by car. Ask the hotel to arrange a transfer, or rent a car at the airport, which also makes it easy to explore the island during your stay.

Are meals included at Le Mahana?

Published rates are for the bungalow only, so meals are extra. The hotel's restaurant and bar serves Polynesian specialties and international dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the only restaurant within walking distance, so ask about meal packages when you book if you prefer to pay in advance.
