The short answer

Yes, if you want nature and good food more than nightlife or luxury resorts. Bornholm is Denmark's sunshine island in the Baltic, with granite cliffs, medieval ruins, smokehouses and fine white sand at Dueodde. June through August is the main season; June and late August are calmer than busy July. Plan at least three nights, ideally with bikes. It pairs well with Copenhagen. Don't miss Sol over Gudhjem, smoked herring on rye, eaten outside at a smokehouse.

Best for
  • Cyclists and outdoor couples
  • Food lovers who like simple places
  • Add-on to a Copenhagen stay
Maybe skip it if
  • You want luxury resorts and nightlife
  • You're traveling October through April

Bornholm floats in the Baltic Sea about 150 km east of Copenhagen, much closer to Sweden than to the rest of Denmark. It feels like a different country from the flat farmland of the mainland. The north is a coast of dark granite cliffs and rocky coves, the south has fine white sand and the interior is a patchwork of fields, forest and old farms.

Danes call it the sunshine island. It earns the name. It gets more sun than most of the country. May and June are often bright and dry. The island is small, about 588 square kilometers, so you can drive across it in under an hour.

For honeymooners, Bornholm offers a slower, more rustic side of Denmark. Spend your days cycling between fishing villages, eating smoked fish fresh from the chimney and climbing medieval ruins with sea views. In the evening, watch the sun set over the water from a harbor bench. It is best for couples who want nature and good food rather than nightlife or luxury resorts.

Why Honeymoon on Bornholm

Bornholm feels like a secret most Americans have not heard of, yet it is a favorite summer escape for Danes. The landscape changes quickly. In a single day you can walk granite sea cliffs in the north, picnic in a forest in the middle and swim from a white sand beach in the south.

The island has a deep sense of history. Hammershus, the ruined fortress on the northwest tip, is described as the largest medieval fortress complex in northern Europe. Four medieval round churches, built partly as defensive towers, rise from the fields.

It is also a place of makers. Glassblowers, ceramicists and small food producers have studios in villages like Gudhjem and Svaneke. You can watch many of them work. Combine that with famous smoked fish and an island pace. Bornholm becomes an easy place to slow down together.

When to Go

June through August is the main season. Long days, the warmest water and full opening hours make it the easiest time to visit. July is the busiest month by far, accounting for a large share of the island's overnight stays, so book early.

May is the sunniest month on average and a lovely time for cycling and hiking, with blossoms on the fields and few crowds. The sea is still very cold for swimming.

September is calmer and often mild, with good light for photography and quieter roads. Some summer restaurants and smokehouses start to close later in the month.

From October to April, Bornholm becomes very quiet. Many businesses close or keep short hours, ferries run less often and the weather is gray and windy. It can be atmospheric for a walking break but is not ideal for a honeymoon.

Where to Stay

Choose your base based on your mood. Gudhjem, on the northeast coast, is the island's most picturesque village, with steep lanes running down to a tiny harbor. It has small hotels, guesthouses and good restaurants within walking distance.

Svaneke, farther along the east coast, is another favorite, with colorful houses, a brewery, a caramel maker and a relaxed harbor. Allinge and Sandvig in the north are close to Hammershus and the cliff trails.

If beaches matter most, look at the south around Dueodde, where you will find holiday apartments and simple hotels near the island's best sand.

Rønne, the main town, is practical for ferry and airport arrivals but less charming. Many couples rent a summer house with a garden or sea view, which gives you privacy and space. Book early for July, when the island is at its fullest.

Romantic Things to Do

Explore Hammershus in the late afternoon, when the light hits the walls and the sea below glows. Walk the path down from the ruins to the coast for views back up at the fortress.

Rent bikes and follow the island's network of cycling routes between villages. A popular loop links Gudhjem with Østerlars, the largest of the round churches, through quiet farmland.

Take the boat from Gudhjem to Christiansø, a tiny island fortress with a handful of residents, granite rocks and seabird colonies. It makes a peaceful day trip in summer.

Walk the Helligdomsklipperne cliffs north of Gudhjem, then visit the Bornholm Art Museum nearby.

Spend an afternoon on Dueodde beach, where the sand is so fine it squeaks underfoot. In summer you can usually climb the lighthouse for a view of the dunes.

Getting There and Around

The fastest way from Copenhagen is a short flight to Bornholm Airport near Rønne, roughly 35 minutes. Many travelers instead take a train from Copenhagen across the Øresund Bridge to Ystad in southern Sweden, then a fast catamaran to Rønne. The whole trip takes around three hours and is scenic. Your passports may be checked crossing into Sweden. There is also a longer car ferry from Køge, south of Copenhagen.

On the island, a car gives you the most freedom, especially if you want to visit several villages in a day. Bus routes link the main towns and run more often in summer.

Cycling is the classic way to explore. Bornholm has a well-developed network of bike paths, much of it away from car traffic. Rental shops in Rønne and the main villages offer regular and electric bikes.

Food and Drink

Bornholm is famous for its smokehouses, with tall white chimneys that rise along the coast. The signature dish is Sol over Gudhjem, smoked herring on rye bread topped with a raw egg yolk, chives and radishes. Eat it outside at a smokehouse with a cold beer.

The island also has a strong food scene beyond the classics. Local producers make cheese, caramels, mustards, beer and aquavit. You can visit many of them. Svaneke in particular is a good spot for a food-focused afternoon.

Bornholm has also produced some of Denmark's most acclaimed cooking. Kadeau, which started on the island's south coast, helped put Bornholm on the gourmet map. Even simple restaurants focus on local fish, lamb and vegetables. In summer, look for strawberries, new potatoes and fresh-caught Baltic fish on menus.

Honeymoon Tips

Bring your passports even though Bornholm is part of Denmark. If you travel via Ystad, you pass through Sweden. Border checks are possible.

Plan for at least three nights. The island is small, but its pleasures come from slowing down. Day trips from Copenhagen feel rushed.

Book ferries and accommodation early for July. The island draws a large share of its visitors in that single month.

Pack layers. Even in summer, the wind off the Baltic can feel cool, especially on the northern cliffs.

If you want a quieter experience, visit in June or late August. You will still get long days and open restaurants, with more space on beaches and cliff paths.

Carry a little cash for honesty stalls along country roads, where farmers sell vegetables, eggs and flowers.

FAQ

Bornholm honeymoon FAQ

How do you get to Bornholm from Copenhagen?

You can fly from Copenhagen to Bornholm Airport near Rønne in about 35 minutes. The popular alternative is a train across the Øresund Bridge to Ystad in Sweden, then a fast catamaran to Rønne, taking roughly three hours in total. A slower car ferry also runs from Køge, south of Copenhagen.

Is Bornholm worth visiting on a Denmark honeymoon?

Yes, if you enjoy nature, cycling and food. Bornholm offers a different side of Denmark, with granite cliffs, medieval ruins, round churches and smokehouses. It is not a luxury resort destination, but it is charming and relaxed. Three or four nights pairs well with a stay in Copenhagen.

Do we need a car on Bornholm?

A car is useful if you want to see the whole island in a short time. Buses connect the main towns but run less often outside summer. Many couples rent bikes instead, since the island has a well-developed network of cycle paths. Electric bikes make the hillier northern section much easier.

What is Sol over Gudhjem?

It is Bornholm's signature open-faced sandwich: smoked herring on dark rye bread topped with a raw egg yolk, chopped chives and sliced radishes. The name means sun over Gudhjem, after the yolk. It is served at the island's traditional smokehouses, best eaten outdoors with a cold beer.

When is the best time to visit Bornholm?

June through August is the main season, with warm weather, long days and everything open. May is the sunniest month and quieter, though the sea is cold. July is extremely busy, so June or late August offers a better balance. Outside summer, many businesses close and transport runs less often.
