Santorini

A sunken volcano, a rim of white villages and the sunset everyone dreams of

The short answer

Santorini earns its place on honeymoon lists: cave suites carved into the caldera cliffs, private plunge pools and sunsets over a flooded volcano. Go late May through June or mid-September through early October for warm seas and slightly thinner crowds. Caldera suites with private pools are among the priciest rooms in Greece in high summer, so the shoulder months matter. Imerovigli is quieter than Oia. Plan three to four nights with a second island. Don't miss a sunset catamaran across the caldera.

Best for
  • Couples who want a view-first suite
  • Wine lovers curious about volcanic whites
  • Pairing with a second Greek island
Maybe skip it if
  • Crowds and cruise-ship days frustrate you
  • You want sandy beaches at your door

Santorini is the rare place that looks exactly like its photographs and then somehow better. About 3,600 years ago a colossal eruption blew the middle out of this island. The sea rushed in to fill the hole. What remains is a crescent of cliffs, banded in red, black and cream, wrapped around a flooded caldera, with whitewashed villages balanced along the rim like frosting on a cake.

For honeymooners, the formula is hard to resist: a cave suite carved into the cliff, a private plunge pool hovering over the void, Assyrtiko poured as the sky turns tangerine and long dinners under bougainvillea. It is also one of the most visited islands in Greece, welcoming around two million travelers a year, so a little planning goes a long way. Choose the right village, travel in the shoulder months and time your walks for the quiet hours. Do that and you will see why Santorini sits at the top of so many honeymoon lists.

Why Honeymoon in Santorini

Few destinations deliver romance as instantly. The caldera views are staggering from almost every terrace on the western rim. Santorini's hotels have the honeymoon suite down to a science: cave-style rooms, outdoor hot tubs, heated plunge pools and breakfast served wherever the view is best.

Beyond the views, the island has real depth. You can wander the Bronze Age streets of Akrotiri (a town preserved under volcanic ash) and taste wines made from vines trained into low baskets to survive the wind. You can also swim beneath red and black cliffs and sail across the caldera to soak in volcanic hot springs. Pair a few nights here with a second island and you have the classic Greek honeymoon.

When to Go

Most caldera hotels open from around April to late October or early November and close for winter. The sweet spots for couples are late May through June and mid-September through early October, when days are warm, the sea is swimmable and crowds ease slightly.

July and August bring the hottest weather, the highest rates and the busiest lanes in Oia and Fira, especially when cruise ships are in port. April and late October are calmer and cheaper but cooler; choose a hotel with a heated pool. Note that the island experienced an intense swarm of earthquakes in early 2025 that prompted a temporary state of emergency, since lifted. Check current advisories before you travel, as you would anywhere.

Where to Stay

The caldera rim is where you want to be. Each village has its own personality. Oia, on the northern tip, is the most famous, all blue domes and sunset crowds. Katikies Santorini is the classic Oia choice: white cave suites cascading down the cliff, three infinity pools and a setting a minute from the main lane. Just beyond the village, Canaves Oia Epitome trades caldera views for direct sea sunsets, with every suite and villa facing west over its own pool, plus dark volcanic-stone design that feels modern and calm.

Imerovigli, the highest point of the rim, is quieter and has the widest views. There, Grace Hotel, from Auberge, offers just 23 rooms, a showpiece infinity pool and dinners at Varoulko, an outpost of a celebrated Athens seafood restaurant. Fira is busier and best for nightlife, while Firostefani sits between Fira and Imerovigli. The black-sand beach towns of Kamari and Perissa offer better value but no caldera views. Caldera suites with private pools are among the priciest rooms in Greece in high summer, so the shoulder months make a real difference to the bill.

Romantic Things to Do

Sail the caldera on a catamaran, with stops to swim near the warm springs and a sunset at sea, which neatly avoids the scrum at Oia's castle. Walk the cliff path from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli toward Oia, about 6 miles, ideally in the early morning; even a short stretch rewards you with epic views.

Tour a winery to taste dry, mineral Assyrtiko and amber Vinsanto, the sweet wine made from sun-dried grapes. Visit Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by the eruption, where multistory buildings still stand under a protective roof. Swim at the Red Beach, framed by rust-colored cliffs; rockfalls have closed or restricted access at times, so obey the signs or see it from a boat. Or descend to Ammoudi Bay below Oia for grilled fish by the water. End each day with a sunset that you will be comparing every future sunset to.

Getting There & Around

Most couples flying from the US connect through Athens or another European hub. Santorini's airport (JTR) is roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the caldera villages. Ferries and high-speed boats also link the port of Athinios with Piraeus and other Cyclades islands, including Mykonos, several times a day in summer.

On the island, taxis are limited and unmetered, so pre-book private transfers through your hotel. Buses radiate from Fira but are crowded in summer. Renting a car or ATV can be fun but stressful on narrow roads; a private driver for a winery or beach day is a smarter honeymoon splurge. Most caldera villages are pedestrian-only, so porters carry luggage the final stretch.

Food & Drink

Santorini's volcanic soil produces intensely flavored ingredients: cherry tomatoes that make the famous tomato fritters, creamy yellow fava from split peas, capers and white eggplant. Seafood shines at the tavernas of Ammoudi Bay and along the south coast.

The wine here is seriously good. Assyrtiko, the island's signature white, is bone-dry with citrus and saline notes. It pairs beautifully with grilled fish. Many wineries offer tastings on terraces overlooking vineyards or the caldera. For special nights, the island's best hotel restaurants, such as Elements at Canaves Oia Epitome, Botrini's at Katikies and Varoulko at Grace, offer refined tasting menus with views. Book sunset tables well in advance.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Book early: the best caldera suites for June through September often sell out six months or more ahead.
  • Pay for privacy: a suite with a private plunge pool or hot tub transforms the experience.
  • Dodge the crowds by exploring in the early morning and watching sunset from your terrace or a boat.
  • Expect stairs: caldera hotels are built into cliffs; pack light and in soft bags.
  • Pair Santorini with Mykonos or a quieter island for a balanced two-week trip.
  • Leave a buffer: summer winds can delay ferries, so avoid taking the last boat or flight before your international departure.

FAQ

Santorini honeymoon FAQ

Is Oia or Imerovigli better for a honeymoon?

Oia is the best-known village, with blue domes, boutiques and the famous sunset, but it is also the busiest. Imerovigli sits higher on the rim with wider views, calmer lanes and a more secluded feel. Many couples choose Imerovigli for peace and visit Oia for an evening stroll, or stay just outside Oia for the best of both.

How many nights do we need in Santorini?

Three to four nights is ideal for most couples. That allows one day for a caldera cruise and one for a winery and Akrotiri, with time left to simply enjoy your hotel and its views. If Santorini is your only island, stay five nights, but many honeymooners split their time with Mykonos or another Cyclades island.

When is Santorini least crowded?

Late April, May and mid-September through October are calmer than July and August, when cruise ships and summer travelers peak. Within any day, early mornings are the quietest. Many hotels close from November to March, so the shoulder months give you the best balance of open hotels, warm weather and fewer crowds.

Do Santorini hotels have beaches?

Caldera-rim hotels sit on cliffs, so they do not have beaches; instead they offer infinity pools and private plunge pools. For swimming in the sea, head to Ammoudi Bay below Oia, the Red Beach, or the black-sand beaches of Kamari and Perissa on the east coast. A caldera cruise also includes several swim stops.

Is Santorini safe to visit after the 2025 earthquakes?

A swarm of earthquakes in early 2025 led to a temporary state of emergency, which was lifted in March of that year. Tourism has continued. As with any destination, check the latest travel advisories at travel.state.gov and local guidance before you go. Follow your hotel's instructions while on the island.
