The short answer

Capri is a two or three night honeymoon finale best enjoyed after the day-trippers leave, when the Piazzetta lights up and the cliffs turn pink. Go late May to mid-June or in early September for warm water and everything open. Avoid August. It suits couples who like a little old-world glamour and don't need a car. The top hotels are among Italy's priciest in summer, though family-run guesthouses offer better value. Don't miss a skippered boat loop around the island and through the Faraglioni arch.

Best for
  • Couples who love boats and swimming
  • Pairs ending an Amalfi Coast trip
  • Fans of dressing up for dinner
Maybe skip it if
  • Steep steps and crowds wear you out
  • You want a budget beach week

Capri has two personalities. From about ten in the morning until the last ferries leave in the early evening, the island belongs to day-trippers who pack the funicular and shuffle along the shopping streets. After that it goes quiet. Lanterns come on, the Piazzetta fills with people who are actually staying and the limestone cliffs turn pink over a very blue sea.

Honeymooners should aim for the second Capri. Spend at least two nights, ideally three. Plan your days around the rhythm of the crowds. Mornings are for walks and boat trips. Midday is for a long lunch at a beach club tucked under the rocks. Evenings are for dressing up a little and strolling.

The island is small, about four miles long, but it holds two towns, several cliffside trails and some of the most romantic hotels in southern Italy. It also pairs neatly with the Amalfi Coast or Naples, a short boat ride away.

Why Capri Works for Newlyweds

Capri has drawn lovers and the wealthy since the Roman emperor Tiberius ruled the empire from a villa on its eastern cliff. The appeal is easy to see. The coastline is sheer limestone dropping into clear water, dotted with grottoes and sea stacks. Bougainvillea spills over white walls.

What makes it special for a honeymoon is how complete it feels. No car is needed, the hotels are intimate and the island has a slightly old-world glamour, with crisp linen, leather sandals and couples lingering over a bottle of Falanghina. It works as a standalone escape or as the beach-and-boat finale to an Italy trip that started in Rome or Florence.

When to Go

Capri runs on a season. Most hotels and beach clubs open around Easter and close by late October or early November. Late May through mid-June and the first three weeks of September are the best balance of warm sea, open everything and manageable crowds.

July is hot and busy but glamorous. August is the peak of Italian holidays, with packed ferries and top room rates, so it is the month to avoid if you can. April and October are lovely for walking, though the water is cool and some places run shorter hours. In winter much of the island shuts, which can feel romantic for a night but limits your choices for a honeymoon.

Where to Stay

Capri town is the social center. Staying here means walking to the Piazzetta for evening drinks and to the boutiques along Via Camerelle. Grand Hotel Quisisana sits right on that street and has hosted celebrities for generations. Hotel Punta Tragara, on a quiet bluff overlooking the Faraglioni, is a favorite for couples who want views and calm. J.K. Place Capri sits above Marina Grande with a stylish beach-house feel.

Anacapri, higher up the island, is quieter and more village-like, with easy access to Monte Solaro and the lighthouse at Punta Carena. Capri Palace Jumeirah there is known for its spa and art-filled rooms. Capri's best-known hotels are among the priciest in Italy in July and August. Smaller family-run guesthouses offer good value in both towns. Whatever you book, confirm whether the hotel sends a porter to meet your ferry, since luggage on the stepped lanes is no joke.

Romantic Things to Do

Charter a small boat with a skipper for a loop around the island. You will pass the Faraglioni rock stacks, swim in coves inaccessible by land and float through the arch beneath the middle stack. Many skippers carry chilled wine.

The Blue Grotto is famous for its electric-blue light. Visits involve switching into tiny rowboats and lying back to pass through a low opening, with only a few minutes inside. It closes when the sea is rough, which happens often, so treat it as a bonus rather than the main event.

On land, ride the single-seat chairlift from Anacapri to the top of Monte Solaro for the highest view on the island. Walk the Pizzolungo path from the Arco Naturale to Punta Tragara in the late afternoon. Visit Villa San Michele in Anacapri for its gardens and sphinx terrace.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Naples. Some summers bring seasonal nonstops from the US to Naples, so check what is running for your dates. Otherwise fly into Rome and take the high-speed train to Naples, which takes about 70 minutes, or connect through a European hub. From Naples, hydrofoils leave the Molo Beverello port for Capri in about 50 minutes. From Sorrento the ride takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Boats also run from Positano and Amalfi in season.

On the island, a funicular connects Marina Grande with Capri town in about five minutes. Small public buses and open-top taxis link the ports, Capri town and Anacapri. Taxis cost more but save long waits in summer. Book hotel luggage porters in advance and travel light; you will thank yourselves on every staircase.

Food and Drink

The insalata caprese was born here: ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and good olive oil. Order it everywhere and compare. Ravioli capresi are filled with local cheese and marjoram and served with a light tomato sauce. Torta caprese, a dense chocolate and almond cake without flour, makes the best dessert.

Lunch at a beach club is a Capri tradition. La Fontelina sits on the rocks beneath the Faraglioni. Da Luigi ai Faraglioni is next door. Both are reached on foot down a long path or by their own shuttle boats. Book ahead in high season. In the evening, the bars around the Piazzetta charge for the view, which is the point. Finish with a small glass of limoncello made from Sorrento lemons.

Honeymoon Tips

Stay overnight. It is the single biggest upgrade you can make. The island you see at 8 p.m. is calmer than the one you see at noon.

Arrive at the Blue Grotto early, before the tour boats. Bring cash, which the rowboat crews and entrance desk often prefer. If you land there on a choppy day, ask your skipper for the Green Grotto or the White Grotto instead.

Wear proper walking shoes. Capri is steep. Many paths are stone steps. Dress smart for dinner; casual is fine at lunch, but evenings run a bit more polished. Ferries can be canceled in strong wind, so leave a buffer before an international flight from Naples rather than catching the last boat the evening before.

FAQ

Capri honeymoon FAQ

Is Capri better as a day trip or an overnight stay?

Overnight, without question, for a honeymoon. Day-trippers arrive mid-morning and leave around sunset, so staying lets you enjoy the island when it is calm. Two or three nights gives you time for a boat day, a hiking day and slow evenings without watching the ferry clock.

Should we stay in Capri town or Anacapri?

Capri town suits couples who want shopping, nightlife and the Piazzetta on their doorstep. Anacapri is quieter, a little cheaper and closer to Monte Solaro and the western coast. Buses and taxis connect the two in about 15 minutes, so neither choice cuts you off from the other.

Is the Blue Grotto worth it?

It is beautiful but brief. You transfer to a rowboat, duck through a small opening and spend only a few minutes inside. Lines can be long in summer and it closes in rough seas. Go early in the morning or include it on a private boat tour so the wait does not eat your day.

Can we combine Capri with the Amalfi Coast?

Easily. In season, ferries connect Capri with Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi. A common plan is three or four nights on the Amalfi Coast followed by two or three on Capri, then a ferry back to Naples for your flight home. Allow a weather buffer before any international departure.

When does Capri close for the season?

Most hotels, restaurants and beach clubs open around Easter and close by late October or early November. A few places stay open year-round, mostly in Capri town, but winter brings reduced ferry schedules and quiet streets. For a full experience, plan your honeymoon between May and early October.
