Why Honeymoon in St. David's
This is Grenada at its most peaceful. The bays are calm, the hills are planted with nutmeg, cocoa and bananas and the roads are lined with fruit stands rather than shops. Evenings are dark and quiet, with tree frogs instead of traffic.
It also puts you close to the island's natural sights. The rainforest of Grand Etang and several waterfalls are within an hour's drive. Rum, chocolate and spice estates welcome visitors.
For couples who want luxury, the presence of a Six Senses resort makes St. David's an appealing base, with spa programs and farm-to-table dining. Couples on a smaller budget can find guesthouses and villas around the bays. The trade-off is distance from Grand Anse's beach life, which you can visit by taxi.
When to Go
The dry season runs from roughly January through May, with sunshine, steady trade winds and the lowest humidity. Rates are highest from mid-December through April.
June through December is the rainy season, though showers are often short and the island turns lush. Grenada lies at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, so direct hits are less common than farther north, but they do happen. Hurricane Beryl struck Carriacou and parts of Grenada in 2024. Buy insurance that covers named storms from August through October.
Spicemas, Grenada's carnival, takes over the island in August with music, costumes and street parties. Book early if you plan to travel then. Temperatures stay in the mid to high 80s Fahrenheit year round.
Where to Stay
Six Senses La Sagesse is the headline address. It has 56 pool suites and 15 villas, all with private plunge pools and large terraces, set between two beaches and around a natural lagoon. The spa sits at the heart of the resort facing the water. Three restaurants draw on Caribbean and South American cooking with produce from the resort's gardens. Expect top-tier pricing, often well into four figures a night in high season, as an approximate guide.
Elsewhere in St. David's and the nearby southeast, lodging is mostly small guesthouses, eco-lodges and private villas around Westerhall Point and the bays toward Calivigny. Many have kitchens and views over the water.
For more restaurants and nightlife, split your stay with a few nights at Grand Anse.
Romantic Things to Do
Spend an easy morning on the beach at La Sagesse, swimming in the sheltered water and walking the shoreline toward the headlands. Kayak the mangroves at dawn, when birds are most active.
Visit Westerhall Estate, a historic rum producer in St. David's, for a tour and tasting. Walk through the Laura Spice and Herb Garden to see nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves growing. Grenada is called the Spice Isle for good reason.
Drive into the interior for a waterfall swim. Grand Etang National Park has a crater lake and forest trails, while the falls at Annandale and the Seven Sisters are within reach. Take a chocolate tour at a cocoa estate. Back at your hotel, book a spa treatment using local herbs and spices, then end the day with a private dinner.
Getting There and Around
Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) has nonstop flights from Miami on American and from New York JFK on JetBlue, with some seasonal routes from other cities. The drive to La Sagesse takes about 35 minutes along the south coast road.
A rental car gives you freedom, though roads are narrow, winding and hilly. Driving is on the left. You will need a local driving permit, which rental companies can arrange. Many couples prefer taxis or a hired driver for longer trips.
Taxis are widely available at the airport and hotels. Agree on the fare before you leave. Avoid walking along unlit roads at night. Minibuses run along main routes and are a cheap and colorful way to travel by day.
Food and Drink
Grenadian food is rich and spiced. Try oil down, the national dish, a one-pot stew of breadfruit, salted meat, callaloo and dumplings cooked in coconut milk. Lambi, the local name for conch, appears curried or stewed. Fish is caught daily.
Nutmeg shows up everywhere, from rum punch to ice cream. Look for Grenadian chocolate made on the island from local cocoa. Local rum ranges from smooth aged spirits to fiery overproof versions.
St. David's has fewer restaurants than the southwest, so many couples eat at their hotel. For a night out, take a taxi to Grand Anse or St. George's, about 40 minutes away. On Fridays, Gouyave's Fish Friday on the west coast makes a lively, longer excursion.
Honeymoon Tips
- Grenada carries a US State Department Level 2 advisory for crime. Use registered taxis at night, keep valuables out of sight and avoid isolated beaches after dark.
- Pack sturdy sandals for waterfall hikes and muddy trails.
- Bring insect repellent. Dengue occurs in Grenada, so if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
- Carry Eastern Caribbean dollars for small purchases. US dollars are widely accepted.
- Dress modestly away from the beach.
- Book Six Senses or popular villas well ahead for the dry season.
