The short answer

Grand Anse is Grenada's best beach and its easiest base: two miles of soft sand and calm water, 10 to 15 minutes from the airport, with St. George's across the bay. Go January through May for dry weather. It suits couples who want beach days mixed with rainforest waterfalls, chocolate estates and the underwater sculpture park. Stays range from suites with private pools at Spice Island Beach Resort to hillside cottages at Laluna nearby. Plan five to seven nights. Don't miss snorkeling the sculpture park.

Best for
  • Couples who want beach plus day trips
  • Snorkelers and chocolate lovers
  • Short, easy airport transfers
Maybe skip it if
  • Cruise-day vendors would bother you
  • You need an empty beach every day

Grand Anse is the beach most people picture when they think of Grenada. It curves for about two miles along the southwest coast with pale sand and gentle water, backed by almond trees, small hotels and a handful of beach bars. At the northern end the view opens across the bay to St. George's, its red roofs and church towers stacked up the hillside.

For a honeymoon, the location is hard to beat. The airport is about ten minutes away. The capital, with its forts, harbor and markets, is a short taxi ride. Dive boats leave for wrecks and the underwater sculpture park from the beach itself. The rainforest interior is close enough for a half-day outing.

Grand Anse also anchors a wider area. Morne Rouge Bay sits just over the headland. Lance aux Epines and the coves near the airport add quieter boutique stays. Together they form a compact base where you can mix beach time with day trips without spending hours in a car.

Why Honeymoon on Grand Anse

Grand Anse balances convenience and charm. The beach is long enough that you can always find space, the water is usually calm and the hotels are small or midsize rather than towering. Many are locally owned.

You are also close to everything that makes Grenada special. Morning trips can take you to waterfalls in the rainforest, cocoa estates or the forts of St. George's, with time to be back on the sand by mid-afternoon. Evening dinners can be at a beach bar, a resort terrace or a harbor-view table in town.

Grand Anse is busier than the rest of the island. Cruise passengers visit on some days and there are vendors on the sand. That rarely spoils the experience. Morne Rouge or Lance aux Epines offer quieter alternatives a few minutes away.

When to Go

January through May is the dry season, with plenty of sunshine and calm seas. February and March are often the most comfortable months. December is lovely too, though holiday rates and crowds rise toward Christmas.

June through December is wetter. Rain often comes as short heavy showers followed by sunshine. The landscape turns lush. Hurricane season runs June through November. Grenada has been struck by major storms, including Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024, so travel insurance matters if you visit in these months.

August is carnival season. Spicemas brings parades, soca music and the early morning J'ouvert celebrations to St. George's and Grand Anse. Rooms fill fast, so book early if you want to join in or avoid those dates if you prefer quiet beaches.

Where to Stay

Grand Anse itself is lined with resorts. Spice Island Beach Resort is a long-established luxury hotel on the sand, with suites that have private pools. Silversands Grenada has a modern design and a very long pool running toward the beach. Mount Cinnamon sits on the hillside above, with views over the bay.

Morne Rouge Bay, just south, is smaller and calmer. Laluna is a cluster of cottages with plunge pools tucked into a hillside above its own little beach, a favorite with honeymooners.

Lance aux Epines, east of the airport, is a quiet peninsula with sheltered coves. Calabash Hotel is a refined option here, with garden suites and a beach facing the bay.

Sandals Grenada, a kid-free all-inclusive on Pink Gin Beach near the airport, is an option for couples who want everything bundled.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a boat trip to the underwater sculpture park at Molinere Bay, north of St. George's. The figures rest in shallow water, so snorkelers can see them clearly. Coral has slowly grown over them.

Spend a morning in St. George's. Climb to Fort George for views over the Carenage, stroll the harbor where fishing boats unload and browse the spice market for nutmeg, mace and cocoa balls.

Head into the interior for a rainforest swim. Annandale Falls is a short drive. The Seven Sisters hike in Grand Etang is longer and best with a guide.

On clear evenings, walk the length of Grand Anse at sunset. The light turns the sand gold and the lights of St. George's begin to glow across the bay. Finish with dinner on the sand.

Getting There and Around

Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) is about 10 to 15 minutes from Grand Anse, one of the shortest transfers in the Caribbean. US nonstops come from Miami and New York JFK, with seasonal flights from Charlotte and Atlanta in some winters.

Taxis charge set fares between the airport, Grand Anse and St. George's. Many hotels arrange transfers. Minibuses run frequently between Grand Anse and the capital during the day and cost very little; tell the conductor where to stop.

For day trips to the interior and the north coast, hire a driver-guide rather than renting a car. Roads are steep and narrow with tight curves. A guide will point out spice trees and viewpoints you would otherwise miss. If you do drive, you will need a local permit and must keep to the left.

Food and Drink

Grenadian cooking leans on spices, root vegetables and seafood. Try oil down, the national dish, a rich stew of breadfruit, callaloo and salted meat simmered in coconut milk. Many local restaurants serve it on weekends. Some guides arrange an oil down cook-up on a beach.

Grilled fish, lambi (conch) and lobster in season appear on most menus. Look for callaloo soup, nutmeg ice cream and cocoa tea made from local chocolate.

The beach bars along Grand Anse are good for a sunset rum punch. Resort restaurants range from relaxed to quite formal, with several known for using local produce.

On a Friday, drive up the west coast to Gouyave for Fish Friday, a street food party with grilled fish, music and crowds of locals. It makes a lively change from resort dining.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Use licensed taxis or hotel drivers at night rather than walking along quiet roads between the beach and your hotel.
  • Book the sculpture park trip for a calm morning when the water is clearest.
  • Bring cash in small bills for beach bars, minibuses and the spice market.
  • Wear water shoes for waterfall hikes; rocks can be slippery.
  • Ask your hotel about cruise schedules if you want a quiet beach day. Grand Anse is calmer when few ships are in port.
  • Try a chocolate tasting. Several estates offer tours that walk you from cocoa pod to bar.
  • If you want total privacy, look at Morne Rouge or Lance aux Epines instead of the main beach.

FAQ

Grand Anse honeymoon FAQ

Is Grand Anse the best place to stay in Grenada?

For most honeymooners, yes. It has the island's best beach, the widest choice of hotels and quick access to the airport, St. George's and day trips. Couples who want more privacy should look at Morne Rouge Bay or Lance aux Epines, which are only minutes away but much quieter.

Is the underwater sculpture park worth visiting?

Yes, especially for snorkelers. The sculptures sit in shallow, sheltered water in Molinere Bay. Many are now partly covered in coral and sponges. Trips leave from Grand Anse and St. George's and often combine the park with a reef snorkel. Calm mornings bring the best visibility.

Is Grand Anse safe?

Grenada is rated Level 2 by the US State Department due to crime. Grand Anse is a busy, well-traveled area and most visitors have no problems. Use common sense: keep valuables in your room safe, use licensed taxis at night and avoid empty stretches of beach after dark. Ask your hotel for local advice.

Can we swim year-round at Grand Anse?

Yes. The water stays warm all year and the beach is sheltered, so swimming is usually easy. Winter swells occasionally bring some waves. Heavy rain can briefly cloud the water. Always swim near other people and follow any flags or warnings from your hotel.

How many nights should we spend at Grand Anse?

Five to seven nights works well. That gives you time for beach days, a morning in St. George's, a rainforest outing and a boat trip. If you plan to add Carriacou, take four or five nights on Grand Anse first, then two or three on the smaller island.
