The short answer

Donegal suits couples who want Ireland's wildest coastline without the crowds: the Sliabh Liag sea cliffs, Glenveagh Castle, Fanad Head and empty beaches. Go May through September and stay at least three nights, ideally split between Lough Eske or Ardara and Lough Swilly. Country-house hotels cost roughly €150–350 a night, approximate. It takes a long drive from Dublin and a tolerance for rain.

Best for
  • Couples avoiding the busy Ring of Kerry
  • Hikers and coastal drivers
  • Pairing with the Causeway Coast
Maybe skip it if
  • You have under a week in Ireland
  • You don't want to drive

Donegal is the corner of Ireland for couples who want the scenery without the tour buses. It is the most northerly county in the Republic, wrapped around the top of the island with a long Atlantic coastline of headlands, sea loughs and wide sandy beaches. Its highlight is Sliabh Liag, sea cliffs that rise roughly 1,970 feet above the ocean, among the highest in Europe and about three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher.

Inland, Glenveagh National Park surrounds a Victorian castle on a lake under the mountains and Errigal, a cone-shaped peak of pale quartzite, dominates the skyline. Parts of the county are Gaeltacht, where Irish is the everyday language.

The Wild Atlantic Way starts or ends here, on the Inishowen Peninsula. Donegal takes effort to reach, about three and a half hours by car from Dublin, which keeps it quiet. Give it at least three nights and plan for weather that changes by the hour.

Why Honeymoon in Donegal

Donegal feels like the west of Ireland before it got busy. You can stand at the Sliabh Liag viewing point with a handful of other people, drive coast roads where sheep outnumber cars and walk beaches like Portsalon, Narin or Maghera without seeing anyone else.

The county rewards couples who like a mix of hiking, driving and long dinners. One day can include a clifftop walk, a castle tour and a pint by a turf fire with a music session in the corner.

Donegal also has some lovely places to stay, from a castle hotel on Lough Eske to old country houses on the shores of Lough Swilly. And the people are warm, with a distinct accent and strong ties to the Irish language. It feels like a separate trip from the Kerry and Clare circuit, rather than a repeat of it.

When to Go

May through August is the best time, with very long days around midsummer, when it stays light until close to 11 p.m. June is often the driest and calmest month and gorse and wildflowers brighten the headlands through late spring.

September is a good shoulder month, with quieter roads and some warmth left in the air, though rain becomes more frequent. Many smaller cafés and attractions run reduced hours from October through Easter.

Winter is wild and wet, with gales off the Atlantic. Storm watching from a cozy hotel can be romantic and on clear dark nights the northern lights are sometimes visible from Malin Head and Inishowen, though sightings are never guaranteed. Whenever you go, pack waterproof jackets and plan flexible days.

Where to Stay

Lough Eske Castle near Donegal Town is the county's most polished splurge, a restored castle hotel on wooded grounds with a spa. Harvey's Point, on the shore of the same lake, is a long-running favorite with a lakeside restaurant.

In the north, Rathmullan House is a family-run country house on Lough Swilly with gardens that run down to a sandy beach. It makes a good base for Fanad Head and Glenveagh.

The southwest, around Ardara, Kilcar and Glencolmcille, suits couples who want small villages, tweed shops and easy access to Sliabh Liag. Inishowen in the far north is quieter still.

Self-catering cottages are common and good value. Expect roughly €150–350 a night for a good double at country-house hotels, approximate, with guesthouses lower and the top castle suites higher.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk at Sliabh Liag. The upper parking area leads to a viewing point over the cliffs and experienced hikers can continue along the ridge called One Man's Path, though it is narrow and exposed. The Pilgrim Path is a gentler alternative.

Spend a day at Glenveagh National Park. A shuttle bus runs from the visitor center to the castle, where guided tours show the rooms. The walled gardens and lakeside paths are lovely in summer.

Drive to Fanad Head for sunset at its white lighthouse above the Atlantic, then follow the Atlantic Drive around Horn Head or the Inishowen 100 loop to Malin Head, Ireland's northern point.

Climb Errigal on a clear morning for a view over lakes and coast. Visit Ardara for Donegal tweed and Glencolmcille for an Irish-language village and a folk museum.

Getting There and Around

Most US travelers fly into Dublin Airport (DUB) and drive about three and a half hours to Donegal Town, or a bit more to Letterkenny. Knock's Ireland West Airport (NOC) is about two hours south of Donegal Town and Shannon (SNN), which has some US nonstops, is roughly four hours.

City of Derry Airport (LDY), just across the border in Northern Ireland, is about 45 minutes from Letterkenny and Donegal Airport (CFN) at Carrickfinn has flights from Dublin.

A car is essential. Roads are narrow and winding, with sheep on the road in places, so budget more time than the map suggests. Driving is on the left. Combining Donegal with the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland makes a natural loop and rental companies may charge for crossing into the UK.

Food and Drink

Seafood is Donegal's strength. Killybegs is the country's largest fishing port and local menus feature crab, mussels, oysters and wild Atlantic fish. Seaweed foraging and seaweed baths are part of the coastal culture too.

Country-house hotels like Rathmullan House serve the most polished dinners, often using vegetables from their own gardens. In villages, pubs serve hearty chowder, fish and chips and stews by the fire. Many host traditional music sessions several nights a week in summer.

Donegal has small craft breweries and gin distilleries that use local botanicals. Cafés are often excellent but close early and restaurants in remote areas may open only on certain days outside summer, so check hours and book dinner ahead.

Honeymoon Tips

Do not rush. Donegal is large, roads are slow and the weather changes plans. Choose two bases, for example the southwest near Sliabh Liag and the north near Lough Swilly. Spend two nights in each.

Take beach safety seriously. Some of the most beautiful beaches, including Murder Hole Beach on the Melmore Peninsula, have dangerous rip currents. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches in summer and stay close to shore.

Bring sturdy shoes and waterproof gear for cliff walks and stay well back from edges in wind.

Download offline maps, since signal can be patchy in remote valleys. Road signs in the Gaeltacht are in Irish only, so knowing a few place names helps. Fuel up when you can in rural areas.

FAQ

County Donegal honeymoon FAQ

Is Donegal worth the drive for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you want wild scenery with far fewer crowds than Kerry or Clare. Sliabh Liag, Glenveagh, Fanad Head and the empty beaches feel remote and the country-house hotels are excellent. Plan at least three nights, since the drive from Dublin takes about three and a half hours.

How do Sliabh Liag and the Cliffs of Moher compare?

Sliabh Liag is far higher, rising roughly three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher and much less visited. The Cliffs of Moher have a large visitor center and paved paths. Sliabh Liag has a simpler visitor center and rougher trails. Both are spectacular and they offer very different experiences.

Can we swim in Donegal?

You can, but the Atlantic is cold and some beaches have strong rip currents. In summer, swim at lifeguarded beaches such as Portsalon or Narin and stay near shore. Avoid swimming at remote beaches in rough conditions. Seaweed baths and hotel spas are a warmer way to enjoy the sea.

Where should we stay in Donegal?

Lough Eske near Donegal Town has the castle and lakeside hotels, which suit couples wanting a splurge. The southwest around Ardara works well for Sliabh Liag and Lough Swilly in the north is ideal for Glenveagh and Fanad Head. Splitting your stay between two areas cuts down on driving.

Can we combine Donegal with Northern Ireland?

Yes, easily. The Causeway Coast is about two hours from Letterkenny and Derry sits right on the border. A loop from Dublin through Donegal, the Causeway Coast and Belfast makes a strong road trip. Tell your rental company if you plan to drive into Northern Ireland, since extra fees may apply.
