At a glance

Three nights in Bangkok, two in Kanchanaburi with Erawan Falls and a night above the River Kwai, then four slow nights in Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand. Every transfer is by private car and none takes more than about four hours. It suits couples who want Thailand without domestic flights, plus history, waterfalls and a spa finale. Go from November to February.

Most Thailand itineraries spend half their time in airports. This one does not. After you land in Bangkok, every leg is a drive of a few hours with a driver who can stop for lunch or a temple on the way.

Three nights in Bangkok come first, on the Chao Phraya River, for temples, canals and street food. Then you head west to Kanchanaburi, where turquoise waterfalls, jungle rivers and the history of the wartime Death Railway sit side by side. One night on a floating raft house on the River Kwai is the wild card of the trip.

The finale is Hua Hin, Thailand's original seaside escape and a long-time retreat for the Thai royal family. It is not a postcard island. It is a relaxed beach town with good hotels, a vineyard, a remarkable cave temple and some of the country's best destination spas. Four nights there is a gentle end to a honeymoon and puts you about three hours from the airport for the flight home.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Bangkok

Land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), usually late at night after a connection in Asia or the Middle East. A hotel car to the river takes 45 to 75 minutes. Sleep late on day 2, then cross to Wat Arun by ferry in the late afternoon. Watching its spire turn gold over the river at sunset, drink in hand on a riverside terrace, is the romantic moment of Bangkok.

On day 3, reach Wat Pho before the tour buses, then explore the Thonburi canals by long-tail boat. Book a Thai massage at a riverside spa in the afternoon heat. In the evening, eat your way down Yaowarat Road in Chinatown.

Both of you need covered shoulders and knees inside temples. Light linen trousers or a long skirt and a shirt with sleeves solve this without overheating. Use the river boats and the skytrain to avoid Bangkok's traffic. Tuk-tuks are fun once, so agree on the fare first.

Days 4–5: Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai

Leave Bangkok after breakfast on day 4 with a private car and driver. The drive to Kanchanaburi takes about three hours. Stop at the Bridge over the River Kwai and the war cemetery in town, then continue upriver. Spend the night at a floating raft house on the Kwai Noi, such as River Kwai Jungle Rafts near Sai Yok. Rooms are simple, but you can swim off your porch and fall asleep to the sound of the river. That night is the romantic moment of the trip.

On day 5, walk the Hellfire Pass memorial trail early, before the heat, then ride the Death Railway over the Wang Pho viaduct. Move to a riverside resort near the bridge for your second night, such as U Inchantree Resort. If you would rather not change rooms, spend both nights near town and visit the river by day.

Save the morning of day 6 for Erawan Falls, with tiers of turquoise pools you can swim in. Go early, wear water shoes and expect small fish to nibble your toes.

Days 6–9: Hua Hin

After your Erawan swim on day 6, drive south to Hua Hin, roughly three to four hours. Check in and take a walk on the beach as the light fades.

Day 7 is for rest. Book a long treatment at your hotel spa and do very little else. On day 8, drive about an hour south to Sam Roi Yot National Park and climb to Phraya Nakhon Cave, where a royal pavilion sits in a cavern lit by a shaft of sunlight. Arrive mid-morning for the best light. The path is steep, so wear proper shoes and carry water.

Day 9 is your splurge. Book a tasting at a hillside vineyard outside town in the afternoon, then a long dinner on the beach. If it falls on a weekend, browse the Cicada Market in the evening. Climbing Khao Takiab hill for sunrise on your last full day, with the long curve of the bay below, is the romantic moment of Hua Hin. Check that your hotel nights fall between Sunday and Thursday if you can, since weekends fill with Bangkok families.

Day 10: Home from Bangkok

Drive about three hours back to Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for your flight home. Leave plenty of time for traffic as you approach Bangkok, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. There are no nonstop flights from Thailand to the US, so you will connect through an Asian or Middle Eastern hub.

If your flight leaves late at night, ask for a late checkout and keep the morning for one more swim. A slower, more scenic option for the journey is the train from Hua Hin's red and cream wooden station into Bangkok, which takes four hours or more. It is lovely but not ideal with large bags on a flight day.

Hua Hin Airport (HHQ) has only a limited schedule of flights, so check what is running before relying on it. For most couples, a private car straight to the airport is the simplest way to end the trip.

Getting Between Stops

Every transfer on this route is by road. Bangkok to Kanchanaburi takes about three hours. Kanchanaburi to Hua Hin takes roughly three to four hours. Hua Hin back to Suvarnabhumi takes about three hours, more in heavy traffic.

Hire a private car and driver for each leg, or keep the same driver for the Kanchanaburi days. Your hotel can arrange this. The cost is modest by US standards. A driver also makes the scattered sights around Kanchanaburi, such as Hellfire Pass and Erawan Falls, much easier.

In Bangkok, use the river boats, the BTS skytrain and Grab. In Hua Hin, ride-hailing apps, taxis and resort cars cover the town. A car with a driver for a day makes Sam Roi Yot and the vineyard simple. Trains link Bangkok with both Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin, but they are slow and better as an outing than as a transfer.

Where to Stay

In Bangkok, stay on the river. The Mandarin Oriental and the Peninsula are the classics. Capella Bangkok and the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River are quieter and newer.

In Kanchanaburi, River Kwai Jungle Rafts near Sai Yok is one of the best-known raft stays. It is simple, so ask about air conditioning, hot water and mosquito nets. U Inchantree Resort and Felix River Kwai Resort sit within walking distance of the bridge.

In Hua Hin, Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin occupies the historic Railway Hotel, which opened in the 1920s. Anantara Hua Hin sits in gardens on the beach north of town. For a wellness honeymoon, Chiva-Som runs set programs with meals and treatments included. Pranburi, south of town, has boutique pool villas with a more secluded feel.

When to Go

November to February is the best window. Days are dry, the heat is manageable and evenings in Hua Hin are pleasant. November and December are ideal for Kanchanaburi, when the forests are still green and the falls are running well. This is high season, so book early and expect Thai weekenders.

March to May is very hot everywhere. The waterfalls can run low, but Hua Hin's sea stays calm and afternoon winds bring kitesurfers.

From about June to October, the rains arrive. Kanchanaburi is lush but trails get slippery, with September usually the wettest month. Hua Hin tends to be drier than much of Thailand, so it still works for a beach stay in early summer. September and October are its wettest months.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $200–700 a night for two across good hotels. Bangkok's river hotels sit at the top. Kanchanaburi raft houses and riverside resorts are much cheaper. Hua Hin varies widely between weekdays and holiday weekends. Chiva-Som programs are priced per person with meals and treatments included. All figures are approximate.

Book the Kanchanaburi raft house first, since good rooms are limited and fill on Thai weekends. Then book Hua Hin for weekday nights if you can.

Other costs are private drivers for each transfer, temple and park entrance fees, the Death Railway ride, a vineyard tasting and spa treatments. Street food in Bangkok and seafood in Hua Hin are excellent value, which leaves room for one big dinner.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a week, skip Kanchanaburi and spend three nights in Bangkok and four in Hua Hin. You lose the river but keep the city and the spa.

With two weeks, add four nights on Koh Phangan or Koh Lanta at the end. From Bangkok, flights reach Koh Samui for Koh Phangan or Krabi for Koh Lanta in about an hour. The Gulf islands near Hua Hin have their best weather from about February to April and stay good through the summer, which suits a longer trip in those months.

Or add three nights in Chiang Mai at the start, a little over an hour's flight from Bangkok. Temples, cooking classes and cool northern evenings make a good contrast with the beach.

Honeymoon Tips

Cover shoulders and knees for both of you at temples, the royal pavilion at Phraya Nakhon Cave and the war cemeteries in Kanchanaburi. Take off shoes where you see others doing so.

The raft houses are simple. Pack a headlamp, repellent and quick-dry clothes. Leave large bags with your driver if the lodge suggests it.

At Erawan Falls, wear water shoes and keep valuables in a dry bag. Monkeys around the falls and in Sam Roi Yot will grab food.

Dengue is present in Thailand, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand before booking. In Hua Hin, swim where others are swimming and respect any flags on the beach.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Is Hua Hin good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for couples who want a relaxed beach town rather than a remote island. Hua Hin has good beach resorts, destination spas, a vineyard and the cave temple at Phraya Nakhon. The sea is calm but less turquoise than on the islands. Its big advantage is being an easy drive from Bangkok.

Is it worth sleeping on a raft house on the River Kwai?

For one night, yes. Swimming off your porch and falling asleep to the river is memorable. Raft houses are basic, though, often with limited electricity and no air conditioning. If that does not appeal, stay at a riverside resort near the bridge and visit the river by day.

How do we get from Kanchanaburi to Hua Hin?

By private car, which takes roughly three to four hours. There is no convenient direct train or flight. Your Kanchanaburi hotel can book a car and driver. You can stop for lunch on the way. Leaving after a morning at Erawan Falls makes the day feel full rather than wasted.

Can we do this itinerary in the rainy season?

Partly. Hua Hin is drier than much of Thailand and works through early summer. Kanchanaburi gets slippery and wet from about June to October, with September the worst. Bangkok storms come in afternoon bursts. If you travel in summer, plan mornings outdoors and keep afternoons for spas and naps.

Do we need to visit the war sites in Kanchanaburi?

You do not have to, but they are worth a few hours. Hellfire Pass and the war cemeteries tell the story of the prisoners of war and laborers who built the Death Railway. The visit is moving rather than heavy. Pair it with Erawan Falls and the river for balance.
