Why Honeymoon in Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi offers something the islands cannot. Its rivers and forests feel wild, yet they are only a short drive from Bangkok. A raft house or riverside resort gives you mornings of mist on the water and evenings with only the sound of insects and passing longtail boats.
It also gives depth to a Thailand trip. The war history here is significant and well presented. Seeing the railway, the cemeteries and the cutting at Hellfire Pass helps you understand a chapter of the region that most visitors never learn about.
For couples who enjoy hiking, swimming in waterfalls and quieter rural travel, two or three nights here make a good contrast with Bangkok's energy and the beach days that follow.
When to Go
The most comfortable months are from about November to February, when the weather is dry and the heat is manageable. This is also high season, when Thai visitors fill the riverside hotels on weekends.
March to May is very hot and the waterfalls can run low. From about June to October, the rainy season turns the forests deep green and fills the falls, though trails get slippery and some days are washed out. September is often the wettest month.
The Erawan pools are usually at their bluest late in the rainy season and into the early dry season, when the water has settled. For the best mix of weather and waterfall flow, aim for November or December. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand.
Where to Stay
The area has two very different kinds of stays.
In and around town, riverside resorts near the bridge make it easy to walk to restaurants and the main sights. U Inchantree Resort sits a short walk from the bridge, with gardens and river views. Felix River Kwai Resort is another established option within walking distance.
Upriver, the experience gets wilder. Floating raft houses and jungle lodges line the Kwai Noi, some reachable only by boat. River Kwai Jungle Rafts, near Sai Yok, is one of the best known. Rooms here are simple, but you can swim off your porch and fall asleep to the river.
Comforts and prices vary widely. Ask about air conditioning, hot water and mosquito nets before you book. Treat any rate as approximate.
Romantic Things to Do
Spend a morning at Erawan National Park. The falls drop through seven tiers of limestone pools, with water in shades of turquoise and emerald. Allow at least two hours to hike to the top and stop for swims along the way. Go early on a weekday to beat the crowds.
Ride the Death Railway from Kanchanaburi toward Nam Tok. The highlight is the wooden trestle at Tham Krasae near Wang Pho, which curves along a cliff above the river.
Set aside a quiet half day for history. Visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the nearby Railway Centre museum, then drive to Hellfire Pass for its memorial walk through the rock cutting. End the day with dinner on a floating restaurant by the bridge.
Getting There and Around
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand, so most couples arrive at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) after a connection in Asia or the Middle East. From Bangkok, a private car to Kanchanaburi takes about three hours. This is the easiest option and lets you stop at sights along the way.
Trains leave from Bangkok's Thonburi Station twice a day and cross the River Kwai Bridge on the way to Nam Tok. They are slow and basic but scenic. Buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal are frequent and quicker.
The sights are spread out, so hiring a car and driver for a day or two works best. Many resorts also arrange tours to Erawan, Hellfire Pass and the railway.
Food and Drink
Floating restaurants beside the bridge serve Thai seafood and river fish, with views of the trains crossing. River prawns, steamed fish with lime and chili and spicy salads are all worth ordering.
The night market near the train station is aimed at locals rather than tourists, which makes it a good place to try grilled meats, noodle dishes and desserts at low prices.
Upriver lodges typically serve set menus of Thai dishes, often family style. Expect simple, fresh cooking rather than fine dining.
Kanchanaburi is a working provincial town, so the restaurant scene is modest. Plan a special dinner for Bangkok or your beach stop and treat this part of the trip as a chance to eat like the locals.
Honeymoon Tips
Pace the history. The war sites are moving and can be heavy, so balance them with time on the river or at the waterfalls.
Bring good shoes for Erawan. The paths get slippery and the upper tiers involve some scrambling. Watch for hornets near the top.
Pack mosquito repellent and long sleeves for evenings on the river. Simpler raft houses may have limited power and no air conditioning.
Dress respectfully at the war cemeteries and temples, with shoulders and knees covered for both of you.
Avoid attractions that offer close contact with tigers or elephants in captivity. If you want to see elephants, choose an ethical sanctuary that does not allow riding.
