At a glanceOne night near San Ignacio, two by Tikal in Guatemala, three on the beach in Hopkins and four on Ambergris Caye. It suits active couples who want Maya ruins and jungle before a long, easy reef finale, all from a short flight to Belize City. Late December to April is the dry season, with February to April the most reliable.
Belize is about two hours by air from Miami and Houston. Tikal, the greatest of the Maya cities, sits just across the border in Guatemala. This 11-day route spends one night in Belize's Cayo District, two near Tikal, three on the beach in Hopkins and four on Ambergris Caye.
The trip moves from jungle to sea. Cayo is a short overnight stop that breaks up the drive to the border. Tikal is the big adventure, with temples rising above the rainforest and howler monkeys calling at dawn. Hopkins is a relaxed Garifuna village on a long beach, with drumming lessons, jungle waterfalls and reef trips. Ambergris Caye is the slow finale, where you snorkel the barrier reef, ride golf carts to dinner and do very little else.
The Tikal leg means an international border crossing by road and one long transfer day back into Belize. After that, every move is short. Ending on Ambergris Caye means a 15-minute flight to the international airport on the way home.

Day by day
Day 1: Cayo District
Land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City. A private transfer west along the George Price Highway to San Ignacio takes about two hours. Spend the night at a jungle lodge around San Ignacio or along the Macal River, where riverside cottages and pools come with birdsong. This puts you about 20 minutes from the Guatemalan border for an early start.
If your flight lands early, walk the hilltop ruins of Xunantunich, a short drive from San Ignacio, reached by a hand-cranked river ferry. Otherwise, swim, eat dinner at the lodge and go to bed early.
The romantic moment is a quiet evening on your porch with the jungle loud around you. Bring breathable long sleeves for the evening, since mosquitoes are part of jungle life.
Days 2–3: Tikal
On day two, a licensed operator drives you across the border at Benque Viejo and Melchor de Mencos, then about two hours on to Tikal. Bring your passports. Stay at one of the simple lodges at the park entrance, such as Jungle Lodge, to wake in the forest, or at El Remate on Lake Petén Itzá for more comfort. Flores, a tiny island town with lakeside restaurants, is another option, about an hour to an hour and a half from the park.
On day three, enter at opening with a guide, when it is cooler and the howler monkeys, toucans and coatis are active. Stand in the Great Plaza before the crowds, then climb Temple IV for the view over the canopy. Rest in the heat of the afternoon.
The romantic moment is sunset over Lake Petén Itzá or the lagoon-side ruins of Yaxhá. Carry quetzales for guides and tips, plus at least two liters of water each in the park.
Days 4–6: Hopkins
On day four, start early. The drive back across the border, through San Ignacio and down the Hummingbird Highway to Hopkins takes about five hours with the crossing. It is the long day of the trip, so book a private driver who handles the whole route.
Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort has treehouse-style rooms on stilts and its own dive and tour operation. Belize Ocean Club, near Sittee Point, has villas and several pools. Jaguar Reef Lodge is a relaxed beachfront choice.
Take a drumming lesson at a Garifuna family workshop, hike to the waterfalls of Mayflower Bocawina National Park and walk the jungle trails of Cockscomb Basin. Book a snorkel trip to the southern barrier reef early in your stay. Bicycles are free at most resorts and the beach road is flat.
The romantic moment is kayaking the Sittee River at dawn, with herons lifting off the mangroves around you.
Days 7–11: Ambergris Caye
On day seven, drive 30 minutes to Dangriga and fly to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye on a small plane, usually connecting in Belize City. This is the slow stretch. Rent a golf cart, unpack properly and stay put.
For the splurge, Cayo Espanto is a private island about seven minutes by boat from San Pedro, with seven villas, most with plunge pools, plus one overwater bungalow. On Ambergris itself, stay north of town for quiet or just south of San Pedro to walk or cart to dinner.
Snorkel Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley early in your stay in case weather forces a reschedule. Take a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole if you are not advanced divers. Leave at least two days with no plans.
The romantic moment is a sunset boat on the lagoon side. On day eleven, fly from San Pedro to BZE, about 15 to 20 minutes, in good time for your flight home.
Getting Between Stops
Belize City to San Ignacio is about two hours by road on the George Price Highway. Book a private transfer through your lodge.
San Ignacio to Tikal is about 20 minutes to the border, then roughly two hours to the park. Use a reputable operator who knows the crossing, travel by day and bring passports. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.
Tikal to Hopkins is about five hours with the border, back through San Ignacio and down the Hummingbird Highway. It is the longest day, so leave early.
Hopkins to Ambergris Caye is a 30-minute drive to Dangriga, then a small-plane flight to San Pedro, usually via Belize City. San Pedro to BZE is 15 to 20 minutes by air or about 90 minutes by water taxi.
Where to Stay
In Cayo, choose a jungle lodge near San Ignacio or on the Macal River for the single night, since it keeps you close to the border. If you add nights, The Blancaneaux Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge is the romantic standout.
Near Tikal, simple lodges at the park entrance give you the earliest start. El Remate has small hotels and eco-lodges by the lake. Flores has the most choice and the best sunset strolls.
In Hopkins, most honeymoon stays sit south of the village toward Sittee Point. Hamanasi, Belize Ocean Club and Jaguar Reef Lodge are good options.
On Ambergris Caye, Cayo Espanto is the private-island splurge. Boutique resorts north of town offer seclusion, while hotels just south of San Pedro keep restaurants within golf-cart range.

When to Go
Late December to April is the dry season and the best time for this route. February to April is the most reliable stretch, with firm jungle trails, calm seas and sunny beach days. Tikal is most comfortable from December to March, before the heat of April and May.
May is hot but still mostly dry. It is a good shoulder month on the cayes.
June to November is the rainy season and Atlantic hurricane season, with the highest risk generally from August to October. Rain falls most afternoons at Tikal and trails turn muddy. Some small businesses in Hopkins close for a few weeks in fall. If you travel then, choose flexible bookings and buy travel insurance.
Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 brings drumming and dancing to Hopkins.
Budget and Booking
As an approximate guide, jungle lodges in Cayo run about $200 to $500 a night for two. Hotels near Tikal are simpler and cheaper. Hopkins beach resorts run roughly $250 to $500. Ambergris Caye boutique resorts are similar or higher, while Cayo Espanto is in a far higher bracket with meals included. All prices are approximate and climb over the holidays and spring break.
Book Ambergris Caye first for the dry season, then the Tikal operator who will handle both border crossings. Domestic flights on Tropic Air and Maya Island Air are easy to book a few weeks out.
The Belize dollar is pegged at two to one with the US dollar. US cash is widely accepted. Carry quetzales for Tikal guides and small purchases in Guatemala.
Staying Comfortable and Safe
The US State Department rates Belize at Level 2 and Guatemala at Level 3. On the Tikal leg, use a reputable operator, cross the border by day and never travel by road at night. In Hopkins and on Ambergris Caye, normal care is enough: lock up bikes, take taxis home after late dinners and keep valuables in the safe.
At Tikal, wear shoes with grip, carry water and use repellent. In Hopkins, sandflies come out on calm evenings. Dengue occurs in both countries. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Belize and Guatemala.
On the reef, wear reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on coral. Golf carts share Ambergris roads with taxis and trucks. The road north of town is dark at night.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For an 8-day trip, skip Hopkins. Spend one night in Cayo, two near Tikal and four on Ambergris Caye, using the water taxi or a short flight from Belize City.
For 13 to 14 days, add two nights to Cayo for the ATM cave, waterfalls in the Mountain Pine Ridge and a stay at The Blancaneaux Lodge. Or add Placencia, about an hour south of Hopkins, for a second beach with a lively village.
If the border crossing does not appeal, swap Tikal for two more nights in Cayo and visit Xunantunich and Caracol, Belize's largest Maya site. You keep the ruins and jungle without leaving the country. Couples who love the sea can split the Ambergris nights between the island and Caye Caulker.
FAQPlanning this trip
Can we visit Tikal from Belize?
Yes. Tikal is about two hours past the border from San Ignacio. A day trip is possible but long. Staying two nights near the park lets you enter at opening, when it is cooler and wildlife is active. Use a reputable operator, cross by day and bring your passports.
Is Hopkins or Placencia better for a honeymoon?
Hopkins is quieter and more local, with Garifuna culture, jungle waterfalls and resorts along a long beach. Placencia has more restaurants and a livelier village. On this route Hopkins fits better, since it is closer to the Hummingbird Highway and has the Dangriga airstrip nearby.
Is Cayo Espanto worth it?
For a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, many couples think so. The private island has only seven villas, most with plunge pools, plus one overwater bungalow. Meals are tailored to you and spa treatments come to your villa. It sits about seven minutes by boat from San Pedro.
What is the best time for a Belize and Tikal honeymoon?
Late December to April, the dry season. February to April is the most reliable, with calm seas and dry trails. Tikal is most comfortable from December to March. June to November is the rainy and hurricane season, with lower rates but more risk.
Why end on Ambergris Caye?
It is the most relaxing stop and the easiest place to finish. After the long Tikal day and active days in Hopkins, four slow nights by the reef let you unwind. San Pedro is only 15 to 20 minutes by air from Belize City's international airport.
