Why Honeymoon in Loreto
Quiet is the main appeal. Loreto has no high-rise hotel zone and few tour buses. You can walk the mission town in an hour and spend the rest of your time on the water.
The marine park is extraordinary. Blue whales, fin whales and humpbacks visit in season. Dolphins travel in large pods. Islands such as Coronado and Carmen have empty beaches and clear water for snorkeling and kayaking.
The landscape is dramatic too. Red-brown mountains rise straight behind the coast. A winding road climbs to the village of San Javier and its stone mission, often called the best preserved on the peninsula. For couples who love nature and solitude, Loreto feels like Baja before the resorts.
When to Go
February through April is the best time for blue whales, along with calm, sunny weather and highs in the 70s Fahrenheit. November through May is generally pleasant, though winter can bring strong north winds that cancel boat trips for a day or two.
June is hot but dry. July through September is very hot, often well above 90 degrees, with high humidity. This is also the start of hurricane season, which runs through November. Fishing and diving are good in summer, but most couples will prefer the cooler months.
October is a transition month with warm water and fewer visitors. Winter holiday weeks and Easter bring Mexican families and anglers, so book rooms early for those dates.
Where to Stay
In town, small hotels near the mission and malecón let you walk to dinner. Posada de las Flores, a boutique hotel on the plaza with a rooftop pool, is a classic choice. La Misión Loreto sits on the malecón with sea views.
South of town, at Danzante Bay about 25 minutes away, Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto is the area's main resort. It has pools, a spa and a beach facing Isla Danzante, with the mountains behind. It works well for couples who want resort comfort and fewer trips into town.
Approximate rates: about US$100 to US$250 a night for boutique hotels in town, with the resort costing more, depending on season.
Romantic Things to Do
Book a whale watching trip in late winter or early spring. Small boats leave in the morning to look for blue whales feeding in the marine park. Bring layers, since mornings on the water can be cool.
Kayak or take a boat to Isla Coronado, a short trip from town, for a white sand beach, clear water and a nearby sea lion colony.
Drive the paved road into the Sierra de la Giganta to San Javier, about an hour away. The 18th-century stone mission sits in a small oasis village. The drive passes canyons and palm groves.
Back in town, walk to the old mission at dusk, then have dinner on the plaza.
Getting There and Around
Loreto International Airport (LTO) has nonstop flights from Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines, plus seasonal American Eagle service from Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix. Routes change, so check before booking. The airport is about 10 minutes from town.
A rental car is useful for San Javier, Danzante Bay and beaches along the coast. Taxis cover the short hops in town. The town center is walkable.
Boat trips leave from the town marina or the harbor at Puerto Escondido, a small port south of town. The drive from Los Cabos takes many hours, so flying direct to Loreto is far easier. Avoid driving highways at night because of cattle and poor lighting.
Food and Drink
Loreto is known for chocolate clams, named for their brown shells. Try them tatemadas, cooked under a fire of brush on the beach, a local specialty. Fish tacos, ceviche and grilled fish fill most menus.
Restaurants around the plaza and malecón are casual, with outdoor tables and live music on some nights. A few places cook more modern dishes with local seafood and produce from farms in the mountains.
Try damiana, a local herbal liqueur, often mixed into margaritas. Drink bottled or filtered water. Smaller places may take cash only, so bring pesos.
Honeymoon Tips
- Plan boat trips early in your stay. Winter wind can cancel tours, so build in a spare day.
- Bring a windbreaker and warm layer for boat mornings in winter.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen. Park rules restrict fishing and disturbing wildlife.
- Keep a respectful distance from whales and follow your guide's instructions.
- The State Department rates Baja California Sur at "exercise increased caution." Loreto is very calm, but take normal precautions.
- Many restaurants close early. Plan dinner for 7 to 8 p.m. rather than late night.
