The short answer

Punta Mita is quiet, gated luxury on Mexico's Pacific coast, 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport. It suits couples who want privacy, golf, spa days and sunsets over the sea, with Sayulita's tacos and surf shops a short drive away. Come November through April; humpback whales fill Banderas Bay from roughly December to March. Lodging is small and very high-end, from Four Seasons casitas to Imanta's stone casas, so budget accordingly. Don't miss a winter whale-watching trip.

Best for
  • Couples seeking privacy and luxury
  • Golfers and whale watchers
  • Beach time without sargassum worries
Maybe skip it if
  • You're traveling on a tight budget
  • You want nightlife outside your door

Punta Mita is a finger of land at the northern edge of Banderas Bay, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport, where the calm bay meets the open Pacific. Much of the peninsula is a private, gated development of roughly 1,500 acres, home to a handful of ultra-luxury resorts, two Jack Nicklaus golf courses and some of the most coveted villas in Mexico. Beyond its gates, the fishing village of Punta de Mita and the surf towns of Sayulita and San Pancho add color, tacos and a laid-back beach-town soul.

For honeymooners, the appeal is a rare kind of quiet luxury. There are no high-rise strips here, no spring-break crowds, just green hills, long beaches and a sunset that drops into the sea every evening. Winter brings humpback whales close to shore and the Marietas Islands offer some of the coast's best snorkeling. Surf breaks are gentle enough for a first lesson together. It's the Pacific coast's answer to the Caribbean, with the bonus of no sargassum.

Why Honeymoon in Punta Mita

Punta Mita delivers privacy without isolation. The gated peninsula feels calm and exclusive, yet you're a short drive from authentic Mexican villages, lively surf towns and the restaurants and nightlife of Puerto Vallarta. It's a place to slow down, with long beach walks, golf on one of the world's most famous holes and spa days that stretch into sunset cocktails.

Nature is a big part of the romance. Banderas Bay is one of Mexico's top destinations for humpback whales in winter. The Marietas Islands, a protected national park, shelter seabirds, reef fish and dramatic rock formations. Unlike the Caribbean coast, the Pacific side isn't affected by sargassum. The west-facing beaches deliver blazing sunsets.

When to Go

The best time for a Punta Mita honeymoon is from November through April. Days are sunny and dry, humidity is low and the evenings are comfortable. Whale season, roughly December through March, overlaps neatly with this window, making it the most rewarding and most popular time to visit; book resorts and signature experiences well ahead.

May is warm and still mostly dry, a nice value month. From June through October, the rainy season brings heat, humidity and afternoon storms, along with the Pacific hurricane season, which typically peaks from August to October. The landscape turns lush green and rates drop, but travel insurance is wise. Surfers should note that bigger swells often arrive in summer.

Where to Stay

Punta Mita's accommodation scene is small and exceptionally high-end, made up of luxury resorts, private villas and a few boutique retreats.

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, the peninsula's pioneering resort, spreads red-tiled casitas and plunge-pool suites down a hillside to the beach. It offers guests access to two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, including the famous Tail of the Whale island green, plus the Huichol-inspired Apuane Spa. It's family-friendly but deeply romantic in the right suite.

Imanta Punta de Mita, outside the gates on a 250-acre jungle reserve, is the opposite in scale: about a dozen stone casas, a showpiece Treehouse and a private beach. Its torchlit Cliff dinner is one of the most memorable honeymoon experiences in Mexico. For more options, look to nearby Sayulita's boutique hotels and the luxury villas within the Punta Mita development.

Romantic Things to Do

In winter, a whale-watching trip is essential; humpbacks breach, slap their fins and sing in the bay. Small-boat tours bring you close while following viewing rules. Visit the Marietas Islands for snorkeling among tropical fish, rays and seabirds; access to the famous Hidden Beach is tightly limited by park regulations, so book with a licensed operator and check current rules.

Take a surf lesson together at one of the gentle breaks around the peninsula, or paddleboard along the calm bay. If either of you golfs, book a round on Pacifico and play the Tail of the Whale, whose green sits on a rock in the sea. Spend an afternoon in Sayulita, browsing colorful shops and grabbing tacos, then catch the sunset from the beach in quieter San Pancho.

Getting There & Around

Fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), which has nonstop flights from many US cities, often in three to five hours. The drive to Punta Mita takes about 45 minutes along the coastal highway. Arrange a private transfer through your resort; the arrivals hall can be busy with timeshare sellers.

Within the gated peninsula, resorts provide carts and shuttles. Taxis are easy to arrange for trips to Punta de Mita village, Sayulita or San Pancho. Renting a car gives you more freedom for exploring the Riviera Nayarit coast, though parking in Sayulita can be tight. For a night in Puerto Vallarta, plan on about an hour each way, depending on traffic.

Food & Drink

The region's signature dish is pescado zarandeado, a whole fish split, marinated in chile and citrus and grilled over wood, often eaten with tortillas and salsas at beachfront palapas. In the village of Punta de Mita, seafood restaurants line the sand, just right for a long, casual lunch.

Sayulita is a fun place for tacos, fresh juices and casual bars, while the luxury resorts offer refined Mexican, Asian and steak-and-seafood dining. Try raicilla, a traditional agave spirit from the nearby mountains of Jalisco that's earthier and often more rustic than tequila or mezcal. Fresh coconut water from a roadside stand is the best beach-day refreshment.

Honeymoon Tips

Book whale tours, golf tee times and special dinners early in high season, as capacity is limited. Pack reef-safe sunscreen for snorkeling trips and the Marietas.

Combine experiences: spend a few nights in total luxury on the peninsula, then a night or two exploring Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta. Ask your resort about honeymoon touches when you book. US dollars are widely accepted, but carry pesos for village restaurants and tips. Consider travel insurance for summer and early fall trips.
