Merzouga Luxury Desert Camps is one of the better-established ways to spend a comfortable night in the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is a tented camp set among the sand, with khaima-style tents of about 35 square meters, each with a proper bed and its own bathroom. Dinner and breakfast are included. You arrive in the afternoon, ride a camel or climb a dune for sunset, eat by candlelight and wake to the dunes turning orange at dawn.

For a honeymoon, the night in the desert is usually the highlight of a Morocco trip and the camp you choose shapes that night. Budget camps can mean shared bathrooms and thin mattresses. This one gives you a private bathroom, a real bed and a calmer atmosphere. For more seclusion, the operator also runs a Private Luxury Camp with just five tents.

It suits couples who want the classic desert experience with comfort and who are happy to share a dining tent and campfire with a few other guests. It suits less well those who want a pool, a spa or total isolation. Most couples stay one night, sometimes two.

Why Couples Love This Camp

The dunes are the point. Erg Chebbi rises suddenly from a flat gravel plain and some crests reach around 500 feet. From the camp you can walk straight out into the sand, climb the nearest ridge and watch the light drain from the dunes as the sun sets.

The camp handles the practical side well. Tents are spacious, with Moroccan rugs and lanterns and each has its own bathroom, which matters more than you might think after a dusty day. Dinner is served by candlelight, with tagines, fresh bread and Saharan flavors, often followed by drumming and music around the fire.

Then there are the stars. With almost no light pollution, the night sky over the erg is the brightest many couples have ever seen. Step away from the camp after dinner and give your eyes ten minutes to adjust.

Tents to Book

The camp offers three tent options. All are about 35 square meters with either a king or twin beds and a private bathroom.

  • The Experience Tent is the entry option, with dinner and breakfast included. It is comfortable and good value for a single night.
  • The Serenity Tent is the step up in price and finish; ask the camp what it adds for your dates.
  • The Private Luxury Camp, run in partnership with The White Camel Acacia, has just five tents. It gives you a smaller, quieter setting with fewer guests around the fire.

For a honeymoon, choose the Serenity Tent or the Private Luxury Camp. Ask about heating and blankets if you travel between November and February, since desert nights can drop close to freezing. Mention your honeymoon when booking; camps often arrange a private dinner setting.

Food and Evenings in the Dunes

Dinner and breakfast are part of the stay. Evenings begin with mint tea on arrival, followed by dinner in a dining tent or out under the stars. Expect Moroccan home cooking: soups, salads, tagines and couscous, with fresh bread baked at the camp.

The camp also sells a Dinner Under The Stars experience for a more private evening, which suits a honeymoon well. Ask what it involves and whether it can be set up away from the main group.

After dinner, there is often music around the fire. You can join in or simply sit back with a blanket and watch the sky. Alcohol is not always on offer in desert camps, so ask in advance if you want to bring a bottle of wine. Breakfast is served after sunrise and is usually simple and filling.

Things to Do

Most couples come for sunset and sunrise. Ride a camel into the dunes in the late afternoon, then climb a ridge at dawn before breakfast. Both are short and suit any fitness level.

The camp also offers sandboarding, quad biking, buggy rides and a guided 4x4 tour around the erg, all at extra cost. A hike up the highest dune nearby is a good challenge for a fit couple.

Outside the dunes, visit the village of Khamlia, known for Gnawa music and the ksar ruins and market around Rissani. Many couples combine one night in the camp with a night at a hotel on the edge of the sand to clean up and rest after the long drive. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a scarf for wind and sand and wear shoes you can empty easily.

Getting There

Merzouga is remote. Most couples arrive by road from Marrakech, a journey of around nine to ten hours, usually broken over two days with a night in the Dades or Todra gorges. From Fes, the drive is around seven to eight hours.

The nearest airport is Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif (ERH), about 2.5 hours away, with limited domestic flights. Ouarzazate is another option for a longer drive.

The camp offers packages from Marrakech, Fes, Ouarzazate and Errachidia that include transport, which is the easiest way to arrange it. You will be met in Merzouga and taken into the dunes by 4x4 or on a camel. Pack a small overnight bag; larger luggage can stay in the vehicle or at the meeting point.

Is It Worth It?

For most couples, yes. A night in the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of the great Morocco experiences and this camp provides real comfort without the very high prices of the most exclusive desert lodges. Having your own bathroom and a proper bed makes the difference between a night you endure and a night you enjoy.

The trade-off is sharing. Unless you book the Private Luxury Camp, you will share dinner and the fire with other guests. Activities such as quad bikes and buggies add up and the drive to Merzouga is long. Couples who want more privacy should book the five-tent camp or ask about a private dinner. Couples who prefer hotels might do one night here and another at an edge-of-dune kasbah with a pool.

Insider tips

  1. Book the Serenity Tent or the Private Luxury Camp for a quieter night.
  2. Ask for a private dinner setting when you mention your honeymoon.
  3. Bring a warm layer even in spring and autumn; desert nights are cold.
  4. Pack only an overnight bag for the camp and leave the rest in the vehicle.

FAQ

Merzouga Luxury Desert Camps questions, answered

Do the tents at Merzouga Luxury Desert Camps have private bathrooms?

Yes. Each tent listed on the official site has its own bathroom, along with a king or twin beds in about 35 square meters of space. This is the main difference from budget camps, where bathrooms are often shared. It makes a single night in the desert much more comfortable.

How many nights should we spend in the desert?

One night is enough for most couples to see sunset, the stars and sunrise. Two nights give you time to rest after the long drive and try activities like sandboarding or a 4x4 tour. Many couples pair one night in a camp with a night at a hotel on the edge of the dunes.

What is the best time of year for a desert camp in Merzouga?

Spring and autumn are best, with warm days and cool nights. Winter days are pleasant, but nights can be close to freezing, so ask about heating. Summer is very hot, often too hot for comfort during the day, though nights are milder.

How do we get to Merzouga from Marrakech?

By road, usually over two days with a stop in the Dades or Todra gorges. The total drive is around nine to ten hours. The camp sells packages from Marrakech, Fes and Ouarzazate that include transport, or you can hire a private driver through a tour operator.

How much does a night at the camp cost?

The official site lists the Experience Tent at about €375 a night for two with dinner and breakfast, roughly $435. The Serenity Tent costs about €650 and the Private Luxury Camp about €685. Activities like quad bikes are extra. Treat these as approximate and confirm when booking.
