Why Honeymoon in Puerto Galera
The main reason is convenience. If your international flight lands in Manila, you can be on a beach in Mindoro the same afternoon, with no domestic flight or small-plane connection.
The diving is excellent. Sabang's sites are a short boat ride from the beach, with coral walls, reef fish, turtles and an enormous variety of nudibranchs. Snorkeling off Small La Laguna is easy too.
The honest caveat is that Puerto Galera has a mixed reputation. Parts of Sabang and White Beach are busy, noisy and not romantic. Choose a resort in one of the quieter coves and you get a calm, green setting with good food and boat trips. It works best as a two- to four-night stop at the start or end of a longer Philippines trip.
When to Go
The dry season, roughly December to May, is the best time. Seas are calmer for the boat crossing, skies are clear and visibility is good for diving. March to May is hottest and calmest.
The southwest monsoon, about June to October, brings rain and rougher seas. Ferries can be cancelled on stormy days. Some beaches are less pleasant. Diving continues in sheltered sites.
November is a shoulder month with improving weather.
Typhoons can affect Mindoro, mostly from about July to November. Watch forecasts and keep a flexible schedule.
Weekends and Filipino holidays, especially Holy Week before Easter and the Christmas period, bring big crowds from Manila. Visit midweek if you can. Book early for peak dates.
Where to Stay
Choosing the right beach matters more here than almost anywhere in the Philippines.
- Small La Laguna and Big La Laguna, just west of Sabang, are quieter coves with dive resorts, good snorkeling and fewer bars. They suit divers and couples who want easy reef access.
- Aninuan and Talipanan, west of White Beach, are the calmest, with a few boutique resorts and long, uncrowded sand.
- White Beach is lively, with karaoke, bars and day-trippers. It suits groups more than honeymooners.
- Sabang is the dive hub, with many bars. Its nightlife is not to everyone's taste.
Comfortable resorts cost very roughly $60–180 a night (approximate). Ask about transfers from Batangas, since some resorts arrange boats directly to their beach.
Romantic Things to Do
Dive or snorkel the Verde Island Passage. Sabang and the La Laguna beaches have reefs within minutes of shore, with coral, turtles and small marine life that draws macro photographers.
Rent a private outrigger and cruise the coastline, stopping at quiet beaches and snorkel spots, then watch sunset over Muelle Bay.
Spend an afternoon at Talipanan or Aninuan, the area's most peaceful beaches, with a swim and a seafood lunch.
Visit Tamaraw Falls, a roadside waterfall with pools, on a drive along the coast.
Hike in the hills behind the beaches with a local guide. Trails lead through forest and past villages of the Iraya Mangyan, one of Mindoro's indigenous peoples. Ask your guide how to visit respectfully.
Getting There and Around
From the US, Philippine Airlines flies nonstop to Manila (MNL) from several cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
From Manila, drive or take a bus to Batangas port, about two to three hours depending on traffic. Leave early to avoid jams.
From Batangas, boats cross to Puerto Galera in roughly an hour. Options include ferries and fastcraft to Balatero port, plus outrigger bangkas that land directly at Sabang or White Beach. Some resorts arrange private boats straight to their beach. Expect a wet landing on bangkas.
In Puerto Galera, tricycles and jeepneys link the beaches and town. Water taxis are useful between coves. Roads are hilly, so walking between beaches is not always practical.
Food and Drink
Puerto Galera has a wide range of food for its size. Beach restaurants serve Filipino seafood, grilled meats and international dishes, from pizza to Thai curries.
Try grilled fish and squid with garlic rice, kinilaw (raw fish cured in vinegar or calamansi) and sinigang, a sour tamarind soup with pork or seafood.
Many resorts in the quieter coves have good restaurants with tables over the water. For a romantic evening, ask for a beach dinner.
White Beach has many bars and inexpensive cocktails. Avoid drinks of unknown origin. Stick to reputable venues.
Drink bottled water and ask whether ice is made from purified water.
Honeymoon Tips
Pick your beach carefully. The difference between a quiet cove and a busy bar strip can define your stay.
Travel midweek. Weekend crowds from Manila fill boats, beaches and restaurants.
Check ferry and bangka operators for safety. Choose licensed boats with life jackets and avoid crossings in rough weather.
Carry cash. ATMs exist in town and at some beaches but can run out.
Use repellent at dawn and dusk. Dengue occurs in the Philippines. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
Currents in the Verde Island Passage can be strong. Dive with experienced operators and stay with your guide.
Keep a buffer before your international flight, since Manila traffic can be slow.
