The short answer

The Algarve is mainland Portugal's most reliable beach honeymoon: golden limestone cliffs, sea caves and calm water that reaches the low 70s by late summer. June and September are the sweet spot, with September often the warmest sea. Pick your base with care. Lagos is lively, the central coast has the big cliffs and resorts and Tavira is calm. Stays range from clifftop luxury resorts to small guesthouses. Plan three or four nights after Lisbon or the Alentejo. Don't miss a boat trip to the Benagil sea cave.

Best for
  • Couples who want easy beach days
  • Couples ending a Portugal road trip
  • Cliff walkers and boat-trip fans
Maybe skip it if
  • You want empty beaches in August
  • You'd rather not drive on vacation

The Algarve is Portugal's southern coast, a hundred-mile strip facing Africa rather than the open Atlantic. That orientation is the secret. While Lisbon's beaches stay chilly, the Algarve gets calm, clear water that warms into the low 70s by late summer, framed by honey-colored limestone cliffs riddled with arches, grottoes and coves you can only reach by boat.

The region has its overbuilt patches, particularly around Albufeira. Brits have been holidaying here for decades. But the best parts remain dramatic. A walk along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Benagil at golden hour is one of the most beautiful coastal walks in Europe.

For honeymooners, the Algarve works as the relaxing final stretch after Lisbon or the Alentejo: a few days of swimming, boat trips and long seafood dinners. Choose your base carefully, because each end of the coast has a different personality. Pick wrong and you could end up on a party strip when you wanted a fishing village.

Why Honeymoon in the Algarve

This is the most reliable beach destination in mainland Portugal. Summers are dry and sunny. From June the water is swimmable without the bracing shock of the west coast. The cliffs make even the busy beaches feel cinematic.

There is a wide range of places to stay, from big luxury resorts with private beach access to small guesthouses in whitewashed fishing towns. Golf, spas and good restaurants are easy to find.

The Algarve also has variety. The western end around Lagos and Sagres is rugged, surfy and wild. The central stretch near Carvoeiro and Benagil has the famous rock formations. The east, around Tavira, is calmer, with lagoons, sandbar islands and a gentler, more Portuguese feel.

When to Go

June and September are ideal. The water is warm, the days are long and the beaches are busy but not packed. September often has the warmest sea temperatures of the year. Late May works well if you are happier walking than swimming.

July and August are peak season with European families, high prices and crowded beaches, especially in Albufeira and Lagos. If those are your only dates, choose a resort with its own beach access or stay in the quieter east.

From November to March the weather is mild and often sunny, good for cliff walks and golf, but the sea is cold, some beach restaurants close and evenings feel sleepy. October is a pleasant shoulder month with fewer people and water that still holds some warmth.

Where to Stay

The central coast between Portimão and Albufeira is the classic honeymoon zone. Vila Vita Parc sits on the clifftop near Porches with gardens leading down to a beach and several restaurants. Bela Vista Hotel and Spa occupies a restored early 1900s mansion on Praia da Rocha in Portimão. Vila Joya near Albufeira is a small, refined hotel best known for its acclaimed restaurant.

Carvoeiro and Ferragudo are good villages for couples who prefer to walk to dinner. Lagos suits travelers who want energy and nightlife alongside the Ponta da Piedade cliffs. For quiet and space, look east to Tavira's old town and the Ria Formosa, or west toward Sagres, where the landscape is wilder and the hotels more relaxed.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a boat trip from Portimão, Carvoeiro or Benagil to see the coast's sea caves, including the domed Benagil cave with its round skylight. Swimming into the cave is banned. Kayak and paddleboard visits must be guided, so a boat or guided kayak tour is the way to go.

Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail along the clifftops between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes, past the Benagil cave from above. Go early or late, carry water and leave time for a swim at Marinha.

In Lagos, explore the rock pillars of Ponta da Piedade by small boat. Then drive to Cape St. Vincent near Sagres for sunset at the southwest tip of Europe, where the cliffs drop straight into the ocean.

Getting There and Around

Faro Airport is the gateway, though direct flights from the US are rare and seasonal at best. Most couples connect through Lisbon or another European hub, or drive down from Lisbon, which takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Trains also run from Lisbon to Faro and Tunes, with connections along the coast.

A car is close to essential. The best beaches, villages and viewpoints are spread out and buses are infrequent. The A22 highway runs the length of the coast with electronic tolls, so get a rental with a transponder. The coastal N125 is slower and busier.

In July and August, beach parking fills by mid-morning. Arrive early, or pick a hotel within walking distance of a good beach.

Food and Drink

Algarve food is built on seafood. Order a cataplana, a stew of clams, fish or pork cooked in a hinged copper pan that is usually sized for two. Grilled sardines are a summer specialty in Portimão. Fishermen's restaurants along the harbors serve whatever came in that morning, sold by weight.

In the hills near Guia, a few roadside restaurants specialize in piri-piri chicken, spicy and charred, eaten with fries and salad. Sweets are made with almonds, figs and carob from the inland orchards.

After dinner, try medronho, a strong local spirit distilled from the fruit of the strawberry tree in the Monchique hills. Algarve wines are improving quickly, especially from small estates around Lagoa.

Honeymoon Tips

Pick one base rather than hopping between hotels; nothing on the coast is more than about two hours apart. If you want peace in summer, prioritize a hotel with direct beach access.

Book boat tours with small operators and morning departures, when the sea is usually calmer and the light on the cliffs is warm. Check the wind forecast. Strong westerlies can cancel trips.

The sun is fierce and much of the coast lacks natural shade. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and hats. Rent an umbrella on popular beaches. Water shoes help on rocky coves. Many beaches have lifeguards only in summer; respect flag colors, especially on the west coast where currents are stronger.

FAQ

Algarve honeymoon FAQ

Can we swim into the Benagil cave?

No. Swimming into the cave and using flotation devices to reach it were banned in 2024. Kayak and paddleboard visits must be with a licensed guide and the number of boats inside is limited. Most couples see it on a boat tour from Benagil, Carvoeiro or Portimão, or look down through the skylight from the clifftop trail.

Which part of the Algarve is best for a honeymoon?

The central coast between Portimão and Albufeira has the most dramatic cliffs and several luxury resorts. Lagos is livelier, with good restaurants and nightlife. The east around Tavira is calmer and more traditional, with sandbar beaches. The far west near Sagres is wild and windy, best for couples who prefer nature to resort life.

Is the water warm enough to swim in the Algarve?

From June to October, yes. Sea temperatures usually reach the high 60s or low 70s by late summer, with September often the warmest month. The eastern Algarve tends to be slightly warmer than the west. Outside those months the water is cold and best enjoyed from the sand.

How many days do we need in the Algarve?

Three or four nights lets you enjoy the beach, take a boat trip, walk the cliffs and see either Lagos or Tavira. With a week, you can split time between the central coast and the quieter east or west. Choose a single central base if you only have a few days.

Is the Algarve too crowded in summer?

July and August are busy, especially around Albufeira, Lagos and the most photographed beaches. Choose a hotel with private beach access, visit popular spots early in the morning and save afternoons for the pool. June and September offer a much better balance of warm weather and space.
