The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel is San Juan's grandest hotel and the best choice for couples who want a city honeymoon with an ocean view. It opened on October 16, 1919, built for Frederick William Vanderbilt and designed by Warren & Wetmore, the firm behind New York's Grand Central Terminal. After decades of decline it was restored and reopened as a luxury hotel. It is once again the landmark of Condado's oceanfront.

The original Spanish Revival building holds the Heritage rooms, while a newer tower adds ocean-view rooms and suites. There are pools on several levels, including an infinity pool above the Atlantic, a full spa and a beach club with cabanas. Dining runs from the fine-dining 1919 Restaurant to a caviar and Champagne bar.

It suits couples who want history, good food and nightlife within a short ride of Old San Juan. Readers of Condé Nast Traveler have ranked it the top hotel in Puerto Rico. Couples who want a quiet, sandy beach resort should pair a couple of nights here with Dorado, Vieques or Culebra.

Why Couples Love the Condado Vanderbilt

Most San Juan beach hotels are modern towers. The Vanderbilt has a story. The old building, with its arches, tiled terraces and grand lobby, has hosted heads of state and Hollywood stars over the past century. It still has a sense of occasion when you walk in.

It is also unusually well placed. Condado is San Juan's most walkable beach neighborhood, with restaurants, boutiques and the calm Condado Lagoon a few minutes away on foot. Old San Juan's forts and plazas are about ten to fifteen minutes by taxi, which makes it easy to spend the day exploring and the evening by the pool.

The hotel has enough restaurants and bars that you could stay in every night without repeating yourselves, which is useful after a long day of walking.

Rooms and Suites to Book

The Heritage guestrooms in the original building have period character and views over historic San Juan. The Tower guestrooms face the ocean. For a honeymoon, an ocean view is worth paying for.

If the budget allows, book a suite. The Commodore Oceanfront Terrace Suite has about 815 square feet inside plus an L-shaped terrace of roughly 1,000 square feet above the sundeck, along with butler service. It is one of the most romantic rooms in the city. The Commodore Oceanfront Suite has the same interior size with two balconies and a butler.

The Biltmore Ocean View Suite, at about 650 square feet with a private balcony, looks over the Atlantic toward Old San Juan and is a good compromise. All suites have a separate sitting area and a separate shower and bath.

Food, Drink and the Spa

1919 Restaurant, named for the opening year, is the hotel's fine-dining room, with dishes built around produce from local farmers and artisans. Book it for your celebration dinner. STK brings a lively steakhouse scene with DJs, Tacos & Tequila is the casual option and Ola Oceanfront serves Puerto Rican breakfast and lunch by the sea.

For drinks, VC Lounge is the oceanfront terrace where the evening starts, Veritas pours wine and cognac with an ocean view and Marabar by 1919 pairs caviar with Champagne or cocktails. AVO Lounge is the cigar bar.

The Vanderbilt Spa offers a full treatment menu and an outdoor clay experience near the main pool. The Spa Tower has an infinity pool with a sundeck above the water, while the Beach Tower has two more pools.

Things to Do

Spend a morning walking the walls of Old San Juan to El Morro before the heat builds, then lunch in the old city. Stroll Paseo de la Princesa at sunset. Back in Condado, paddleboard or kayak on the calm Condado Lagoon, a short walk from the hotel.

Santurce, next door, has La Placita market, street murals and some of the city's best bars. In the old city, La Factoría is the classic spot for late cocktails and salsa. El Yunque rainforest and the bioluminescent lagoon at Fajardo make good day and evening trips.

The hotel's beach club has cabanas, loungers and pool and beach butlers, but no lifeguards. The Atlantic here can have strong waves and currents, so swim only on calm days. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Puerto Rico.

Getting There

Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) has nonstop flights from many US cities. The drive to Condado is usually 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or car service, longer at rush hour. You do not need a car while staying here. Taxis and ride-hail apps cover Old San Juan and Santurce easily. Parking at the hotel adds to the bill.

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so mainland flights are domestic. If you are continuing to Vieques or Culebra, small planes leave from SJU. The Ceiba ferry terminal is about an hour's drive east.

The Vanderbilt works well as the first or last stop on a longer Puerto Rico trip, since it is close to the airport.

Is It Worth It?

For a city stay with history and an ocean view, yes. Rates vary widely by season and room type. We could not confirm a current starting price, so check the hotel's site. As a rough guide, expect entry rooms in the mid hundreds of dollars a night outside winter and suites well above that, plus taxes and a resort fee. Treat any figure as approximate. The hotel's bed-and-breakfast offer, which adds daily breakfast for two, is often worth taking.

The Vanderbilt is not a beach resort in the classic Caribbean sense. The sand in front is narrow, the surf can be rough and the mood is urban. Couples who want long beach days should split their trip and head to Dorado or the islands afterward.

Insider tips

  1. Pay for an ocean view; the Tower rooms and oceanfront suites are where the hotel shines.
  2. Look at the bed-and-breakfast offer, which adds daily breakfast for two at Ola Oceanfront.
  3. Book 1919 Restaurant for your celebration dinner when you reserve the room.
  4. Swim in the pools on rough days; there are no lifeguards on the beach.

FAQ

Condado Vanderbilt Hotel questions, answered

Is the Condado Vanderbilt on the beach?

Yes, it is on the Atlantic oceanfront in Condado, with a beach club offering cabanas, loungers and pool and beach butlers. There are no lifeguards. The surf can be strong, so many guests prefer the hotel's pools, including an infinity pool above the ocean in the Spa Tower.

How old is the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel?

The hotel opened on October 16, 1919. It was developed by Frederick William Vanderbilt and designed by Warren & Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal. It expanded over the following decades, fell into neglect and was restored in the 2000s as a luxury hotel.

Which room is best for a honeymoon at the Condado Vanderbilt?

The Commodore Oceanfront Terrace Suite is the standout, with about 815 square feet inside, a terrace of roughly 1,000 square feet and butler service. For a smaller budget, the Biltmore Ocean View Suite or an ocean-view Tower guestroom gives you the Atlantic outside your window.

How far is the Condado Vanderbilt from Old San Juan?

About ten to fifteen minutes by taxi or ride-hail, depending on traffic. That makes it easy to spend the day walking the old city's walls and forts, then return to the pool. The airport is about 15 to 20 minutes away.

Is the Condado Vanderbilt kid-free?

No. The hotel welcomes families. Ola Oceanfront is described as family-friendly. The atmosphere is still grown-up, especially in the evenings at 1919 Restaurant, VC Lounge and Marabar. Couples who want a fully kid-free stay should look at a smaller hotel or a kid-free resort elsewhere.
