The short answer

Madikwe is a smart Big Five honeymoon for couples who want a safari without malaria pills: the reserve is generally regarded as malaria-free and sits about an hour's charter flight from Johannesburg. Only lodge guests may enter, so sightings stay quiet. Go May through September for the best game viewing and cold mornings; summer is greener and often cheaper. Lodges such as Jaci's or Madikwe Safari Lodge include meals and drives in their rates. Plan three nights, then fly on to Cape Town. Don't miss tracking wild dogs at dawn.

  • Couples avoiding malaria medication
  • A safari added to Cape Town
  • Wild dog fans and keen photographers

  • Leopards top your must-see list
  • Freezing winter game drives sound miserable

Madikwe Game Reserve lies in South Africa's North West province, hard against the Botswana border and about four hours by road from Johannesburg. It covers roughly 290 square miles of bushveld, open grassland and rocky hills. Not long ago much of it was cattle farmland. After the reserve was created in 1991, an ambitious relocation project known as Operation Phoenix brought in elephants, buffalo, rhinos, lions and many other species. It has since become one of the country's most respected safari areas.

For American honeymooners Madikwe has two big advantages. First, it is generally regarded as malaria-free, which means no antimalarial pills and fewer worries for couples who plan to start a family soon. Second, it is open only to guests of the lodges inside it. There are no day visitors or self-drive cars, so sightings are shared among few vehicles. Add a charter flight of about an hour from Johannesburg and you can be on a game drive the afternoon you land.

Why Honeymoon in Madikwe

Madikwe offers the Big Five in a setting that feels private. Lodges are spread across the reserve and each has its own traversing area, so game drives rarely bump into crowds.

It is especially known for African wild dogs, one of the continent's most endangered predators. Seeing a pack on the move is a highlight for many guests. Lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos are regularly seen. Leopards appear more rarely.

The landscape is varied. Grassy plains give way to thick bush and rocky hills, with the Dwarsberg range on the horizon. This mix of habitats supports a wide range of animals and birds.

The lodges themselves are part of the appeal, from family-run camps to luxury suites with private pools and outdoor showers.

When to Go

Madikwe is a year-round destination. Winter, from May to September, is the dry season and the best time for game viewing. Vegetation is thinner and animals gather at waterholes. Days are sunny and pleasant, but early mornings and nights can be very cold, sometimes near freezing. Lodges provide blankets and hot water bottles on drives.

Summer, from October to April, brings heat and afternoon thunderstorms. The bush turns green, many animals give birth and migratory birds arrive. It is a beautiful season for photography. Game can be harder to spot in thick vegetation.

Prices are often lower in the summer months. South African school holidays and the Christmas period are busy, so book well ahead for those dates.

Where to Stay

All accommodation in Madikwe is in lodges inside the reserve, which include game drives and meals in their rates. Options range from intimate family-run camps to polished luxury lodges.

Jaci's Lodges run two well-known properties. Jaci's Safari Lodge has tented suites along a riverbed. Jaci's Tree Lodge has rooms on stilts in the riverine forest. Madikwe Safari Lodge, operated by andBeyond, offers spacious suites with private plunge pools. Madikwe Hills sits on a rocky hill with wide views over the plains.

When choosing, consider the lodge's location, its traversing area and whether it offers private vehicles or guided bush walks. For honeymoons, ask about suites set apart from the main lodge and special touches such as private dinners.

Romantic Things to Do

Game drives are the heart of every day. Most lodges run two, one at dawn and one in the late afternoon, with a stop for coffee or sundowners in the bush. Ask your guide to find a scenic spot on a rocky outcrop, called a koppie, for a sunset drink.

Try a guided bush walk to learn about tracks, plants and smaller creatures. It is a different and intimate way to experience the wild.

Spend midday by your private pool or on a deck overlooking a waterhole, watching animals come to drink.

Arrange a private dinner under the stars or a sleep-out on a platform if your lodge offers one. Madikwe's dry winter nights are often clear, making it a good place for stargazing.

Getting There and Around

Fly to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Delta flies nonstop from Atlanta and United from Newark. Flight times are around 15 to 16 hours.

From Johannesburg, you can drive to Madikwe in about four hours via Zeerust, or take a scheduled or charter light aircraft flight of about an hour to one of the reserve's airstrips. Lodges can arrange road transfers or flights.

Once in the reserve, you get around only on lodge vehicles with guides. Self-drive game viewing is not allowed, which keeps traffic low.

Madikwe combines easily with Cape Town, the Winelands or the Garden Route. A typical honeymoon might include three nights in Madikwe, then a flight to Cape Town.

Food and Drink

Meals at Madikwe lodges are usually included and served at set times around game drives. Expect a light breakfast before the morning drive, a hearty brunch on return and dinner after the evening drive.

Many lodges serve South African dishes alongside international cuisine. Try a braai, the South African barbecue, often served in a boma, an open-air enclosure lit by a fire.

Drinks policies vary. Some lodges include local wines, beers and spirits, while others charge extra. Ask in advance.

Tell your lodge about dietary needs before arrival, since supplies come from outside the reserve. Many lodges will arrange special meals for honeymooners, such as a private dinner on a deck or in the bush.

Honeymoon Tips

Pack layers. Winter mornings and evenings are cold, especially on open vehicles, while afternoons can be warm. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for winter drives.

Choose neutral colors for game drives and walks. Bright colors can disturb animals.

Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.

Check health advice. Madikwe is generally regarded as malaria-free, but confirm with your doctor before you travel. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for this destination.

Respect your guide's instructions. They are trained to keep you safe around wildlife.

Tell your lodge it is your honeymoon. Many offer extras such as champagne on arrival or a private sundowner.

Finally, plan your time. Three nights gives you six game drives, which is usually enough to see a wide range of wildlife.

FAQ

Madikwe Game Reserve honeymoon FAQ

Is Madikwe really malaria-free?

Madikwe is generally regarded as a malaria-free reserve, which is one reason it is popular with honeymooners and families. Still, health guidance can change, so check the latest advice from the CDC or your doctor before you travel. Use insect repellent in summer for comfort.

Can we see the Big Five in Madikwe?

Yes. Madikwe has lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards. Leopards are more elusive than in some other areas, but sightings occur. The reserve is also known for African wild dogs, cheetahs and a wide variety of birds.

How do we get to Madikwe from Johannesburg?

You can drive in about four hours via Zeerust or take a light aircraft flight of about an hour to an airstrip in the reserve. Lodges can arrange either option. Flying saves time and gives you an aerial view of the landscape.

How many nights should we stay in Madikwe?

Three nights is a good amount for most couples. It gives you about six game drives and time to relax at your lodge. Some honeymooners stay four or more nights or split their time between two lodges to experience different areas.

Is Madikwe better than Kruger for a honeymoon?

It depends on your priorities. Madikwe is malaria-free, quieter and closer to Johannesburg by road. The private reserves near Kruger, such as Sabi Sand, often have more frequent leopard sightings and a wider choice of lodges. Both offer excellent safaris.
