The short answer

As a whole honeymoon, probably not. As a day trip or a night or two from Antigua, it is one of the Caribbean's great escapes. Barbuda has miles of empty pink-tinged sand and one of the region's largest frigate bird colonies. Still rebuilding since Hurricane Irma, it has few rooms and basic services. December through April is driest and calmest. It suits adventurous couples who value space over polish. Don't miss the boat trip into Codrington Lagoon to see the frigate birds.

Best for
  • Couples who want an empty beach
  • Adventurous add-on to an Antigua stay
  • Birders and nature lovers
Maybe skip it if
  • You want polished resort comforts
  • Rough ferry crossings make you seasick

Barbuda sits about 25 miles north of Antigua. It feels like a different century. The island is low and flat, ringed by reefs and some of the longest, emptiest beaches in the Caribbean. Its one town, Codrington, was home to around 1,500 people before the 2017 hurricane. Goats and donkeys wander the roads. On a calm day you can walk a mile of sand tinted pink by crushed shells and coral without seeing another footprint.

Barbuda has been through a hard few years. Hurricane Irma struck in September 2017 and the entire population was evacuated to Antigua. Rebuilding has been slow. Debates over land and large new developments continue. For honeymooners, that means Barbuda is not a place for polished resort life. It works best as an adventurous day trip or a short stay of a night or two, added to a base on Antigua. The reward is a rare feeling of having an island almost to yourselves, plus one of the largest frigate bird colonies in the region.

Why Honeymoon in Barbuda

Barbuda offers space, which is increasingly rare in the Caribbean. The western and southern shores have long, uncrowded beaches backed by low scrub, while the Atlantic side has cliffs, reefs and caves. There are no high-rise hotels and very little traffic. Life moves slowly.

The frigate bird colony in Codrington Lagoon is a highlight. Small boats take visitors close to thousands of nesting birds; in breeding season, males inflate bright red throat pouches to attract mates, a show that suits a honeymoon trip nicely.

If you want a Caribbean honeymoon with one day that feels wild, Barbuda delivers. Most couples base themselves on Antigua for comfort and dining, then cross to Barbuda for a day or an overnight.

When to Go

December through April is the dry season, with sunny days, steady trade winds and the calmest overall weather. This is the best time for honeymoons and also the busiest period on Antigua.

May to July is warm and usually fine, with occasional showers and quieter crowds. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August to October. Barbuda is especially exposed because it is so low and flat, so avoid committing to overnight stays there during peak storm months.

The ferry crossing can be rough when trade winds are strong. If you are prone to seasickness, consider flying or choosing a calm day. Frigate birds nest for much of the cooler part of the year. The courtship displays are most visible in winter.

Where to Stay

Accommodation on Barbuda is limited and changes often as the island rebuilds. Options include small guesthouses near Codrington, self-catering beach cottages on the southwest coast and a few higher-end developments that have opened or are under construction. Some feel very simple, so check recent reviews and confirm details such as hot water and power before booking.

Many honeymooners prefer to stay on Antigua and visit Barbuda on a guided day trip, which typically includes the ferry or flight, the frigate bird boat trip, beach time and lunch. If you do overnight, a night or two is enough to enjoy sunset and sunrise on an empty beach before returning to Antigua's restaurants and resorts. See our Antigua southwest coast guide for bases on the main island.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Walk the long pink-tinged beaches of the west and south coasts, where sand can stretch for miles with no one in sight.
  • Take a boat through Codrington Lagoon to the frigate bird colony with a local guide.
  • Explore the caves at Two Foot Bay on the Atlantic side, some with old carvings.
  • Hike to Darby Sink Cave, a large sinkhole filled with ferns and palms.
  • Visit the Martello Tower ruins near the ferry wharf and swim off the nearby beach.
  • Snorkel the reefs when seas are calm; ask locals about the best spots that day.
  • Share a lobster lunch on the beach, a Barbuda specialty.

Getting There and Around

Fly into V.C. Bird International on Antigua. Nonstop flights run from several US cities, including New York and Miami, with some seasonal routes. From Antigua, the Barbuda Express ferry takes around 90 minutes and docks at River Wharf. Small planes also fly to Codrington's airstrip in about 20 minutes. Charters are available.

On Barbuda, there is essentially one main road and many unmarked tracks. Guided tours are the easiest way to see the island in a day. Car rentals and taxis are available but informal, so arrange them in advance.

Ferry and flight schedules to Barbuda change with the season and the weather, so confirm times before you book a tour or a room. A day trip is long, so plan a slow, easy evening back on Antigua.

Food and Drink

Barbuda's food is simple and fresh. Lobster is the island's most famous catch, often grilled and served with rice and peas or salad at beach shacks and small restaurants. Fish, conch and local produce fill out menus.

Restaurants are few and hours can be irregular, so call ahead or ask your tour operator to arrange lunch. Some beach spots open only when visitors are expected. In Codrington, small eateries serve local plates and cold drinks.

Bring water and snacks for exploring, since shops are small and spread out. Back on Antigua, you can enjoy a wider dining scene, from English Harbour seafood restaurants to beach bars at sunset.

Honeymoon Tips

Treat Barbuda as an add-on, not your whole honeymoon. A day trip or one to two nights works well for most couples.

Book day tours with established operators, which handle ferry or flight timing, the lagoon boat and lunch.

Pack sunscreen, hats and plenty of water. Shade is limited on the long beaches.

Carry cash in Eastern Caribbean or US dollars for small purchases; card payments may not be accepted everywhere.

Respect the island's recovery. Support local guides and restaurants, ask before photographing people and follow guide instructions in the bird sanctuary.

Check the weather before crossing. Rough seas can cancel ferries or make the trip uncomfortable.

FAQ

Barbuda honeymoon FAQ

Can we visit Barbuda as a day trip from Antigua?

Yes. Most visitors do. Guided day tours usually include the ferry or a short flight, the frigate bird lagoon, beach time and lunch. It makes for a long but rewarding day. Book with an established operator and check the sea forecast, since rough water can make the ferry crossing uncomfortable or cancel it.

Is Barbuda recovered from Hurricane Irma?

Recovery since the 2017 hurricane has been gradual. Residents have returned and many homes and businesses have reopened, but infrastructure and services remain limited compared with Antigua. Development debates continue. Visitors who support local guides, guesthouses and restaurants help the island's economy, while staying flexible about comforts and schedules.

When can we see the frigate birds?

The colony in Codrington Lagoon is present year round, but the cooler months are the classic time to see breeding activity, including males inflating red throat pouches. Local guides know current conditions and can advise on the best times of day. Boats approach respectfully. Visitors should follow guide instructions to avoid disturbing the birds.

Is Barbuda good for a whole honeymoon?

For most couples, no. Barbuda has limited accommodation, few restaurants and basic services. It shines as a one- or two-night adventure or a day trip within a longer Antigua stay. If you crave total seclusion and do not need luxury, a longer stay can work, but plan carefully and confirm every booking.

Is the sand on Barbuda really pink?

Partly. Tiny fragments of pink shell and coral give some beaches a rosy tint, strongest at the water's edge and in soft late-afternoon light. Don't expect bubblegum pink in photos. What surprises most couples more is the length and emptiness of the beaches, with miles of sand and nobody else on it.
