The short answer

Deshaies is a lovely Guadeloupe honeymoon base for couples who want a real village rather than a resort: waterfront restaurants, a bakery and the long golden sand of Grande Anse a few minutes away. February through April brings the driest weather and calmest seas, while August to October is hurricane season. Stays are small hotels, guesthouses and hillside villas with private pools, with holiday weeks the priciest. Rent a car to explore Basse-Terre. Don't miss snorkeling with turtles in the Cousteau Reserve off Malendure.

Best for
  • Couples who prefer villages to resorts
  • Snorkelers keen on turtles and reefs
  • Fans of Creole food and rum
Maybe skip it if
  • You want nightlife or a big resort
  • You would rather not drive at all

Deshaies is a fishing village of fewer than 4,000 people on the northwest coast of Basse-Terre, the mountainous wing of Guadeloupe. Wooden houses and small restaurants line a sheltered bay where fishing boats and yachts swing at anchor, with forested hills rising straight behind the church. The town has been the main filming location of the BBC detective series Death in Paradise since 2011, so British and French fans come looking for the police station and the beach shack. Most visitors stay for the coast itself.

Just north of town, Grande Anse is one of the longest beaches in Guadeloupe, a wide stretch of golden sand backed by palms and almond trees. Smaller coves such as La Perle sit a short drive farther on. To the south, the leeward coast runs toward the Cousteau Reserve, where sea turtles graze over coral gardens. Inland, rivers tumble out of the rainforest. Deshaies suits couples who want a beach base with character, good food and easy days out, rather than a big resort.

Why Honeymoon in Deshaies

Deshaies combines the best of Basse-Terre in one small place. You get a proper village with a bakery, a market and waterfront restaurants, plus some of the island's most appealing beaches within a few minutes' drive. The sea on this leeward coast is usually calmer than on the Atlantic side. The sunsets face straight out over the water.

It is also a good base for exploring. The rainforest, waterfalls and hiking trails of the national park are close, as is the Cousteau Reserve for snorkeling and diving. Rum distilleries sit just around the northern tip. Evenings are relaxed rather than lively. Couples who want nightlife should look to Grande-Terre. Those who prefer a long dinner, a short walk home and the sound of rigging in the harbor will feel right at home.

When to Go

The dry season, from roughly December to May, is the best time to visit, with the most sunshine and the calmest seas for snorkeling. February through April is ideal, though Christmas, New Year and the February French school holidays are the busiest and most expensive periods.

Basse-Terre is wetter than Grande-Terre. Showers can roll down from the mountains even in the dry season, usually passing quickly. From June to November, expect more rain and humidity, with hurricane season peaking between August and October. Some guesthouses and restaurants close for a few weeks in September or October.

May, June and early December are good shoulder-season choices, with warm water, green hills and lower prices. Fans of Death in Paradise may spot filming in town during the production season, which usually runs for several months each year.

Where to Stay

Deshaies has a mix of small hotels, guesthouses and villas rather than large resorts. In the village, look for rooms or apartments overlooking the bay, which let you walk to restaurants and the waterfront.

The hills around town are dotted with villas and bungalows with private pools, gardens and sea views. Many are aimed at couples, with open-air decks and outdoor showers. You will need a car, as roads are steep.

Near Grande Anse and along the coast road, small hotels and rental cottages sit close to the beach. Langley Resort Fort Royal occupies a point between two beaches north of town, with a dive center and water sports.

Book early for the dry season and French school holidays, when the best properties fill months ahead. Ask about air conditioning, mosquito screens and backup water supply before you commit.

Romantic Things to Do

Spend a morning at Grande Anse, then return for the sunset when the sand glows gold. Visit the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies, a hillside garden built on the former property of the French comedian Coluche, with tropical flowers, ponds and views over the coast.

Drive about 30 minutes south to Malendure and take a boat to the Pigeon Islands in the Cousteau Reserve, where you can snorkel or dive among coral, fish and sea turtles. Many turtles also feed in the shallows off Malendure beach itself.

Book a sunset sail from the village bay. Hike up the Deshaies river into the forest, swimming in rock pools along the way. Head around the northern tip to Sainte-Rose for a distillery tour and tasting. On a clear day, walk to Pointe Batterie for views over the bay and the islet of Kahouanne.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Pointe-à-Pitre International (PTP). Air France has nonstops from Miami year-round, with American adding seasonal flights. The drive to Deshaies takes about an hour via Sainte-Rose and the northern coast road, longer at rush hour around the airport.

A rental car is essential. Buses are infrequent and taxis are expensive, especially at night and on Sundays. Roads along the coast are generally good but narrow and winding in places, with steep climbs into the hills. Drive on the right.

Deshaies is a good base for exploring Basse-Terre. The Cousteau Reserve is about 30 minutes south, the Carbet Falls and La Soufrière about an hour and a half. Trois-Rivières, the main port for ferries to Les Saintes, is around an hour and a half away along the leeward coast.

Food and Drink

Deshaies has a lively restaurant scene for its size, with waterfront tables along the main street. Expect grilled fish of the day, lobster, octopus and conch, often served with rice, red beans and sauce chien. Creole classics like colombo, accras and boudin share menus with French bistro dishes and wood-fired pizza.

In the morning, pick up croissants and baguettes at the bakery and fresh fruit at the market. At lunch, beach shacks near Grande Anse serve simple grilled plates and cold drinks.

For rum, head to Sainte-Rose and the Domaine de Séverin distillery, a historic estate open for tours and tastings. Try a ti-punch with white rum, lime and cane sugar, or a planteur, a fruit punch made with rum. Reserve dinner in high season, as the best spots fill quickly.

Honeymoon Tips

Watch the sea conditions. Some beaches north of town, including Cluny, can have strong currents. Swim where locals swim and respect warning flags.

Use reef-safe sunscreen in the Cousteau Reserve and do not touch the turtles or coral. Book snorkel trips for the morning, when the water is calmest and visibility is best.

Bring insect repellent, especially for rainforest hikes and evenings in the hills. Keep valuables out of sight in your car at beaches, where break-ins occasionally happen.

If you are fans of Death in Paradise, ask locally about filming locations and respect closed sets. Combine Deshaies with a few nights in Les Saintes or on Grande-Terre for a varied trip. Finally, mention your honeymoon when booking; small hotels and villa owners often add a thoughtful touch.

FAQ

Deshaies honeymoon FAQ

Is Deshaies a good base for a Guadeloupe honeymoon?

Yes, especially for couples who want beaches plus nature. Deshaies has a pretty village, good restaurants and some of Basse-Terre's best beaches, with the rainforest and the Cousteau Reserve close by. It is quieter than the resort towns on Grande-Terre. Many couples pair it with a few nights in Les Saintes.

How far is Deshaies from the airport?

Deshaies is about an hour's drive from Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport via Sainte-Rose and the northern coast road. Traffic around the airport and Baie-Mahault can add time at rush hour. Rent a car at the airport, since public transportation is limited and taxis are expensive for the trip.

Can we visit Death in Paradise filming locations?

Yes. The village stands in for the fictional town of Honoré. Many locations are easy to recognize, including the waterfront, the church and the beach used for the detective's shack. When the show is filming, some areas may be closed, so respect barriers and crew instructions. Locals are used to fans and are generally happy to point the way.

Where can we snorkel with turtles near Deshaies?

The best spot is the Cousteau Reserve around the Pigeon Islands, about 30 minutes south near Malendure. Boats run snorkel and dive trips from Malendure beach. Turtles often feed in the shallows close to shore. Go in the morning for calm water, use reef-safe sunscreen and keep a respectful distance from the animals.

When is the best time to visit Deshaies?

February through April offers the driest weather and calmest seas. December and January are also pleasant but busier and more expensive around the holidays. May, June and early December are good value. From August to October, rain and hurricane risk increase. Some guesthouses and restaurants close for several weeks.
