The short answer

Little Bay is an adventurous add-on rather than a full honeymoon: Montserrat's quiet harbor and the starting point for Rendezvous Bay, the island's only pale sand beach, which you may well have to yourselves. Go December through April for dry weather and calm seas. Lodging is simple, so most couples rent a hillside villa in Woodlands or Salem and expect warm hospitality instead of resort polish. Pair three or four nights here with a resort stay on Antigua. Don't miss the hike over the bluff to Rendezvous Bay.

Best for
  • Couples who love empty beaches
  • Divers and snorkelers avoiding crowds
  • Travelers curious about a live volcano
Maybe skip it if
  • You want resort service and fine dining
  • Small planes and ferry delays stress you

Little Bay is where Montserrat is building its future. After the volcano buried Plymouth in the 1990s, this sheltered cove in the northwest became the island's port and the planned site of a new capital. Today it is a small, slightly unfinished place: a ferry dock, a dark sand beach with a few bars, a cultural center, a dive shop and a harbor project that has been slowly taking shape.

For honeymooners, it is the gateway to Rendezvous Bay, the only pale sand beach on the island. You reach it by boat or by a hike over the headland. You may well have it to yourselves. It is also a handy base for exploring the north and a short drive from the volcano viewpoints in the center of the island.

Nobody comes here for luxury. Little Bay is for couples who enjoy simple beach days, snorkeling, long talks over rum punch and the feeling of being somewhere few Americans have been. Pair it with a resort stay on Antigua and you get the best of both.

Why Honeymoon in Little Bay

Isolation is the draw. Montserrat gets few visitors. Little Bay, despite being the main port, is still quiet most of the time. There are no cruise crowds, no beach vendors and no traffic jams.

Rendezvous Bay is the highlight. The walk over the bluff takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes each way. The reward is a crescent of light sand backed by green cliffs with calm, clear water for snorkeling. It feels like a private beach because it usually is.

Little Bay also puts you close to everything else the island offers. The airport, the government center at Brades and the hiking trails of the Centre Hills are all within a short drive. The volcano viewpoints are under half an hour away. You can spend one day on the beach, the next on a trail and the next staring at a volcano, all without long transfers.

When to Go

December through April is the best time, with mostly dry weather, temperatures from the mid 70s to the high 80s Fahrenheit and steady trade winds. The sea in Little Bay is usually calm in these months, which matters for the boat ride to Rendezvous Bay and for snorkeling.

March is the busiest month because of the St. Patrick's festival, which brings music, food and many returning Montserratians. Book early if you want to join in.

May and June are good shoulder months with fewer visitors, though showers become more frequent.

July through November is the wet season and hurricane season. Swells can make the ferry from Antigua uncomfortable or cancel sailings. Trails also get muddy. Late December brings the annual festival, a lively time to be on the island if you can handle a bit of rain.

Where to Stay

Little Bay itself has limited lodging, so most couples stay a short drive away.

Woodlands and Salem, about 15 to 20 minutes south, hold most of the villas and guesthouses on the island. Many sit on hillsides with pools and sunset views over the sea. A private villa is the most romantic option on Montserrat and gives you space and privacy.

Olveston, just past Salem, is home to Olveston House, the former home of record producer Sir George Martin. It is now a small inn with a veranda and a relaxed, homey feel.

Closer to Little Bay, a few guesthouses and apartments in Brades, Davy Hill and nearby villages offer simple rooms within minutes of the beach and the ferry.

Whatever you book, confirm the details: air conditioning, hot water and a rental car are not always included. Expect warm hospitality rather than resort polish.

Romantic Things to Do

Start with Rendezvous Bay. Hike over the bluff from Little Bay early in the morning before the heat. Bring water, snacks and snorkel gear. If hiking does not appeal, ask a local boat operator or the dive shop about a drop-off and pickup.

Book a dive or snorkel trip with the dive shop in Little Bay. The reefs around the north coast see few divers, so the fish are unhurried and you will rarely share a site with another boat.

Rent kayaks and paddle along the cliffs at sunrise, or join a boat tour around the island for views of the volcano and the buried capital from the sea.

On land, drive to Jack Boy Hill and Garibaldi Hill for volcano views. Stop at the Volcano Observatory for its short film.

In the evening, sit at a beach bar with a rum punch and watch the light fade over the bay.

Getting There and Around

Fly from the US to Antigua (ANU), then take the short flight on Fly Montserrat to John A. Osborne Airport, about 15 minutes in the air. The airport is roughly 10 minutes by car from Little Bay. The small planes have strict baggage limits, so pack light.

The ferry from Antigua docks right at Little Bay and takes about 90 minutes. Schedules vary and sailings may not run every day, so confirm close to your trip.

Renting a car is the easiest way to explore. Driving is on the left, the roads are narrow and steep and you need a temporary local permit, available at the police station. Taxis are available and can be booked for half-day tours.

Walking around Little Bay itself is easy. The hike to Rendezvous Bay starts at the north end of the beach. Trail conditions vary, so wear proper shoes.

Food and Drink

Food on Montserrat is hearty and local. The national dish is goat water, a thick, spiced stew of goat meat served with crusty bread rolls. Try it at least once, ideally on a weekend when many local spots make it.

Fresh fish is the other staple, usually grilled or fried and served with rice and peas, plantains, breadfruit and salad. Look for ducana, a sweet potato dumpling, plus johnny cakes at breakfast.

The beach bars at Little Bay serve cold beer, rum punch and simple plates of fish or chicken. Several restaurants and guesthouses in Woodlands, Salem and Olveston cook more elaborate dinners, often by reservation only. Ask your host what is open, since hours change.

Groceries are limited and pricier than on Antigua. If you are staying in a villa, consider bringing a few favorite snacks or wine with you on the flight or ferry.

Honeymoon Tips

Bring cash. Eastern Caribbean dollars or US dollars both work. Not every business takes cards. ATMs are few.

Pack reef shoes, snorkel gear and a dry bag for the hike or boat to Rendezvous Bay. There are no facilities there, so carry plenty of water and pack out all trash.

Build in extra time for travel. Flights and ferries from Antigua can be delayed by weather. A missed connection can cost you a day. Plan your last night in Antigua before an international flight home.

Respect the volcano zones. Access rules can change. Signs and roadblocks are there for good reason.

Tell your hosts you are on your honeymoon. On an island this small, word spreads quickly. You may find yourselves invited to a local event, a family dinner or a dance at a festival.

FAQ

Little Bay honeymoon FAQ

How do we get to Rendezvous Bay?

You can hike over the bluff from the north end of Little Bay, which usually takes 30 to 45 minutes each way on a steep, sometimes rough trail. Alternatively, arrange a boat drop-off through a local operator or the dive shop. Bring water, sun protection and snorkel gear, since there are no facilities on the beach.

Is Little Bay a good base for a honeymoon?

It is a good base for beach days, diving and the ferry, but lodging in the bay itself is limited. Most couples stay in a villa in Woodlands, Salem or Olveston and drive to Little Bay. That combination gives you privacy and views while keeping the beach and harbor within a short drive.

Can we swim at Little Bay?

Yes. Little Bay has a sheltered dark sand beach that is usually calm, especially in the dry season. It is good for swimming and snorkeling near the rocks. Watch for boat traffic near the ferry dock and harbor works. For clearer water and pale sand, make the trip to Rendezvous Bay.

How far is Little Bay from the volcano?

The volcano viewpoints are roughly 20 to 30 minutes away by car. Jack Boy Hill gives views over the eastern ash flows. Garibaldi Hill looks over Plymouth. The Volcano Observatory, with its short film, is on the way. Always check current access zones before driving south.

Is Little Bay worth it compared to Antigua?

They offer very different trips. Antigua has resorts, white sand beaches and plenty of restaurants. Little Bay offers solitude, a volcano and an island few people visit. Many couples spend most of their honeymoon on Antigua and add three or four nights on Montserrat for the adventure.
