The short answer

Cayman Brac is the outdoorsy Cayman island: a limestone Bluff with caves, parrots and sea cliffs, plus excellent diving and a famous wreck. It suits active couples who prefer quiet to glamour, ideally December through June. Lodging is simple and good value, often roughly $200 to $450 a night (approximate). Pair it with Grand Cayman for restaurants and resort comfort.

Best for
  • Divers and snorkelers
  • Hikers and cave explorers
  • Couples on a moderate budget
Maybe skip it if
  • You want luxury resorts and fine dining
  • Small planes make you nervous

Cayman Brac is the most dramatic of the three Cayman Islands and the least visited. It is about 12 miles long and a mile or so wide. Its spine is the Bluff, a limestone ridge that rises gently from the west and ends in sea cliffs around 140 feet high at the eastern tip. The island is home to roughly 2,000 people, along with parrots, caves and a few small hotels.

The Brac, as everyone calls it, suits couples who want an outdoorsy, unhurried honeymoon. Days are spent diving or snorkeling the reefs, walking the Bluff, crawling through caves and reading on quiet beaches. Little Cayman, with its famous Bloody Bay Wall, is a few miles away.

What it does not have is luxury. There are no big resorts, only a few restaurants and simple, friendly lodgings. Many couples combine a few nights here with a stay on Grand Cayman, where the dining and the beach resorts make up for what the Brac lacks.

Why Honeymoon on Cayman Brac

The Brac feels like the Caymans a generation ago. Traffic is light, people wave from their porches and you can drive end to end in about half an hour. Each day can be different: a dive in the morning, a cliff walk at lunch, a cave in the afternoon and dinner by the water.

The underwater scenery is excellent, with reef walls on both sides of the island and one of the best wreck dives in the Caribbean. The island also has more land-based adventure than Grand Cayman, from climbing routes on the cliffs to hiking trails through dry forest.

Couples who love the outdoors and value quiet over glamour often rate the Brac as the highlight of their Cayman trip. It is easy to reach from Grand Cayman and costs less than the main island.

When to Go

December through April is the most comfortable time, with drier weather, steady breezes and calm seas on the sheltered side of the island. It is also when migrating birds join the local species, so the parrot reserve is especially lively.

May and June are a good alternative, with warm water and fewer visitors. Diving visibility is often excellent in late spring and summer.

August through October is the riskiest part of hurricane season. Some small businesses close for part of the fall. If you plan to go then, buy insurance that covers named storms and keep plans flexible. Summer days can be hot and humid. Mosquitoes are more active after rain.

Where to Stay

Lodging on the Brac is low-key. Most of it sits along the south and west coasts, close to the beaches and the dive boats. Brac Reef Beach Resort is the island's main dive resort, with a pool, restaurant and bar and its own dive operation. Cayman Brac Beach Village and other condo complexes offer apartments with kitchens.

Private villas and cottages are common, many on the water or up on the Bluff with views over the sea. They give you space and privacy, but you will need a car and will cook some meals yourselves.

Expect rates well below Grand Cayman's beach resorts, often roughly $200 to $450 a night in high season, as an approximate guide. Dive packages that bundle rooms, meals and boat dives are usually the best value.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk the Bluff. Drive Major Donald Drive to the lighthouse at the eastern end and follow the clifftop trail, where brown boobies nest and the drop to the sea is sheer. Come for sunrise if you can.

Dive or snorkel the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts, a Russian-built navy frigate that was deliberately sunk off the northwest coast as an artificial reef. It now lies in two pieces covered in coral, with parts shallow enough for snorkelers on calm days.

Explore the caves. Peter's Cave and the Bat Cave are easy to reach, while Rebecca's Cave and the Great Cave take a little more scrambling. Look for the rare Cayman Brac parrot in the reserve on the Bluff. If you are adventurous, book a guided climb on the sea cliffs. Take a day trip to Little Cayman for its empty beaches.

Getting There and Around

Most couples fly into Grand Cayman (GCM), which has nonstops from many US cities, then take a Cayman Airways flight to Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CYB). The hop takes around 40 minutes, sometimes with a stop on Little Cayman. Cayman Airways has also operated direct flights between Miami and the Brac at times, so check current schedules.

There is no ferry from Grand Cayman, though private charters are possible. Book inter-island flights early, since planes are small and luggage limits can apply.

You will want a rental car. Local agencies offer cars and jeeps, often with airport pickup. Driving is on the left, roads are quiet and distances are short. Bikes are a pleasant way to explore the flat western end.

Food and Drink

Dining on the Brac is casual and the choice is limited, so think of it as part of the charm. A handful of restaurants serve local Caymanian food such as conch stew, fish rundown and fried snapper, along with burgers, pizza and Asian dishes. Most resorts have their own restaurant and bar.

Friday nights often bring live music at a hotel bar. Try a Caybrew or a rum punch. Bring home a Cayman rum cake.

If you are staying in a villa, the island's grocery stores carry basics, though prices are high and stock varies. Buy fresh fruit when it appears. Mango season runs through summer, when local farms sometimes let visitors pick their own.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Book inter-island flights and dive trips together. Schedules are limited.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and water shoes for rocky entries.
  • Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight for the caves.
  • Use insect repellent, especially at dusk and after rain. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
  • Plan meals ahead. Some restaurants close early or on certain days.
  • Allow a full day without diving before you fly back to Grand Cayman or home.
  • Pair the Brac with Grand Cayman for a mix of quiet and comfort.

FAQ

Cayman Brac honeymoon FAQ

How do we get to Cayman Brac?

Fly to Grand Cayman (GCM), which has nonstops from many US cities, then take a Cayman Airways flight to Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CYB), around 40 minutes. Cayman Airways has also flown direct between Miami and the Brac at times. There is no public ferry. Book early, since planes are small.

Is Cayman Brac good for nondivers?

Yes, more than many dive islands. You can hike the Bluff, explore caves, look for parrots, try rock climbing, snorkel the shallow reefs and relax on quiet beaches. Restaurants and nightlife are limited, though, so couples who want lots of evening options should combine the Brac with Grand Cayman.

How does Cayman Brac compare with Little Cayman?

Little Cayman is flatter and even quieter, known for the Bloody Bay Wall and empty beaches. Cayman Brac is larger, with the Bluff, caves, climbing and more varied land activities. It also has more rental villas. The islands are only a few miles apart, so you can visit one from the other.

What does a Cayman Brac honeymoon cost?

It is generally cheaper than Grand Cayman. Small resorts, condos and villas often run roughly $200 to $450 a night in high season, as an approximate guide. Add the inter-island flight, a rental car and dive packages. Food costs are high because most supplies are imported, so a kitchen helps.

When is the best time to visit Cayman Brac?

December through April has the most comfortable weather and calm seas. May and June are quieter with excellent diving visibility. The hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk from August through October. Travel insurance that covers named storms is wise in those months.
