The short answer

If you must choose, choose Sigiriya. Lion Rock, the Dambulla caves, Polonnaruwa and the elephant safaris add up to the most memorable few days in Sri Lanka. The villa lodges are made for couples. Kandy is the better pick for culture, gardens and a quiet hillside hotel. It is also the gateway to the tea country train. Most couples should do both: three nights in Sigiriya, then one or two in Kandy.

Kandy and Sigiriya are both cornerstones of a Sri Lanka itinerary, about two and a half to three hours apart by road. Couples often wonder where to stay longer, or whether they can skip one.

Sigiriya sits in the flat, green dry zone of the Cultural Triangle. In the late fifth century King Kashyapa built his palace on top of a granite column about 600 feet high, with stone lion paws at the gate to the final stair. Around it, within an hour's drive, are the cave temples of Dambulla, the ruins of Polonnaruwa and parks where wild elephants gather at reservoirs.

Kandy is in the hills to the south, around a lake made by the last Sinhalese king. It holds the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most revered shrines, plus the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. The city itself is busy, so couples usually stay in the green hills above it.

Sigiriya is about history and wildlife. Kandy is about living culture and the start of the tea country.

Ancient Ruins Versus a Living City

Sigiriya's history is dramatic and mostly in ruins. Climbing Lion Rock takes about 90 minutes round trip. You pass frescoes of painted women on the western face, then the Mirror Wall, where visitors scratched verses into polished plaster from around the eighth century. The summit is a maze of foundations and cisterns with views across the plains. Nearby, the Dambulla cave temples are filled with painted Buddhas. Polonnaruwa is a ruined royal city best seen by bicycle.

Kandy's history is very much alive. The Temple of the Tooth holds what Buddhists revere as a tooth of the Buddha. Pilgrims in white carry lotus flowers through its halls while drums sound for the daily rituals. The temple and the old royal center around the lake form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three village temples west of the city, Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka and Embekke, are known for their carved wooden pillars.

Sigiriya impresses. Kandy moves you.

Wildlife and Gardens

Sigiriya has one of Sri Lanka's best wildlife experiences close by. Afternoon jeep safaris at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park follow herds of wild elephants as they graze around reservoirs. Drivers share sightings daily, so let your lodge pick the park that week. Around August and September, herds gather on the grassland at Minneriya as the reservoir shrinks. Peacocks call across the fields in the evening. Monitor lizards and birds share the wetlands at some lodges. One caution: wild elephants cross the roads after dark, so never walk along unlit roads at night.

Kandy's nature is gentler. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, just outside town, are among the finest in Asia, with an orchid house, giant bamboo, a spice garden and an avenue of royal palms. At dusk, bats fly over Kandy Lake as the lights come on. Mosquitoes are active then. Dengue occurs in Sri Lanka, so use repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Where You Will Stay

Sigiriya's lodges are among the most romantic in Sri Lanka. Water Garden Sigiriya has 30 villas set around ponds and paddy fields, many with plunge pools and several facing the rock, from around $450 a night with breakfast. Jetwing Vil Uyana has dwellings on stilts and in reed beds around a wetland. Near Dambulla, Heritance Kandalama is Geoffrey Bawa's long building hidden in the jungle above a reservoir, with an infinity pool looking toward Sigiriya.

Kandy's best stays are in the hills. The Kandy House, a restored manor in the village of Gunnepana about 20 minutes from town, has nine rooms and a pool facing rice paddies, from around $300 a night with breakfast. Amaya Hills sits high on a ridge. Earl's Regency and Cinnamon Citadel overlook the Mahaweli River. Santani Wellness Resort & Spa, about an hour away, is a design-led retreat for yoga and spa therapies.

All prices are approximate and climb steeply during Kandy's Perahera festival.

Climate and Timing

Kandy sits at about 1,600 feet, so it is milder than the plains, with daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit. January to April is the driest, most comfortable period. The southwest monsoon brings showers from May to September, though less rain than the west coast. October and November are usually wettest. The Esala Perahera, Kandy's great festival of costumed elephants, dancers and drummers, takes place over about ten nights in July or August. It is spectacular and very crowded, so hotels book out months ahead.

Sigiriya, in the dry zone, is hotter. Its wettest stretch comes with the northeast monsoon from late October into December. February and March are the sweet spot. April and May bring intense heat. June to September is dry, dusty and best for elephants.

In both, the rule is the same: get going early. Lion Rock opens around 7 a.m. and the morning puja in Kandy starts at dawn.

Experiences for the Two of You

In Sigiriya, climb Pidurangala, the rock about half a mile north of Lion Rock, for sunrise. It takes about 20 minutes plus a scramble over boulders, passing a reclining Buddha. The view of Lion Rock as the mist lifts is the photograph everyone wants. Climb Lion Rock itself at opening time the next day, keeping quiet near the wasp nests on the upper stairs. In the afternoon, take a safari. Book a village lunch served on lotus leaves, then try curd and treacle, thick buffalo curd with kithul palm syrup.

In Kandy, attend the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth, when drums sound and the doors of the inner chamber open. Both partners should cover shoulders and knees. White clothing is customary. Walk the lake path at dusk, watch a Kandyan dance performance with fire walking and drumming and spend a morning at Peradeniya. Book side-by-side Ayurvedic treatments at a hillside retreat to finish the day.

Getting There and the Route Between

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Sri Lanka. Most couples connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or Singapore to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and then hire a car with a driver for the whole loop.

Sigiriya is about four hours by road from the airport, depending on traffic around Kurunegala. Cinnamon Air has offered light-aircraft flights of about 30 minutes, worth considering if you land tired, though schedules change. Kandy is about three to three and a half hours from CMB. Trains from Colombo take about two and a half to three hours.

Between the two, the drive takes about two and a half to three hours, often with a stop at the Dambulla cave temples on the way. From Kandy, the hill country train heads toward Nanu Oya and Ella. Reserved seats sell out quickly, so book early. Central Kandy has slow traffic, especially at school times, which is another reason to stay outside the center.

How Many Nights in Each

Sigiriya deserves more time. Two nights is the minimum to climb the rock, see Dambulla and fit in one safari. Three nights lets you add Polonnaruwa or simply rest by the pool between early starts. Many couples start here: the drive from the airport is manageable, the pace is gentle and the dawn starts suit bodies that are still on US time.

Kandy needs one or two nights. Two is ideal, with a full day for the temple, the lake and the gardens and two evenings for the puja and a dance performance. If you are short on time, one night still lets you see an evening ritual before catching the morning train into the hills.

A classic eight-night opener runs three nights in Sigiriya, two in Kandy and three in the tea country around Nuwara Eliya or Ella, before heading to the beach. If you are cutting one, keep Sigiriya. Dropping Kandy entirely means you see the temple only in passing, if at all.

FAQ

Kandy vs Sigiriya: your questions

Is Kandy or Sigiriya better for a honeymoon?

Sigiriya, if you have to pick one. Lion Rock, the Dambulla caves, Polonnaruwa and the elephant safaris are hard to beat. Its villa lodges suit couples well. Kandy is better for living culture, gardens and the hill country train. Most honeymoons include both, with more nights in Sigiriya.

How far is Kandy from Sigiriya?

About two and a half to three hours by car, often with a stop at the Dambulla cave temples along the way. Most couples travel with a hired driver, which is affordable and makes the winding roads easier. Leave in the morning to avoid arriving in Kandy during the slow afternoon traffic.

Is the Sigiriya climb hard?

It is a steady climb of stairs rather than a technical hike, taking 40 to 60 minutes up for most reasonably fit couples. Some metal stairways bolted to the rock can feel exposed if you dislike heights. The real challenge is heat, so start at opening time and carry water.

What should we wear to the Temple of the Tooth?

Both of you should cover your shoulders and knees. White or light colors are customary. Shoes and hats come off at the entrance, so socks help on hot stone floors. Avoid posing with your back to Buddha images, which many Sri Lankans find disrespectful.

When can we see the most elephants near Sigiriya?

From June to September the region is dry. The gathering at Minneriya, when herds crowd the grassland around the shrinking reservoir, usually peaks around August and September. Elephants are present year-round, moving between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park. Let your lodge choose the park on the day.
