Why Honeymoon in Ella
Ella gives you mountain scenery without mountaineering. Most of the best walks take an hour or two on clear paths, so couples who are not serious hikers still get the big views. Little Adam's Peak, a pyramid-shaped hill at about 3,700 feet, is the easy classic. Ella Rock is the longer, harder one.
The railway adds romance. The line from Nanu Oya curls through tea estates and tunnels on the way into Ella, then crosses the stone Nine Arches Bridge just outside town. Watching a train cross it is one of those small events that draws a crowd every time.
There is also a practical reason. Ella sits between the Cultural Triangle and the south coast, so it breaks up the drive. Several lodges perch on ridges with private views of the gap, which makes it easy to spend a whole day doing almost nothing.
When to Go
Ella lies on the eastern, Uva side of the hills, so its weather differs from Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. The wettest period here comes with the northeast monsoon from roughly October to December, when trails turn muddy and cloud can hide the views for days. Locals also warn that December can be very rainy.
The most reliable stretch is January to March, with clear mornings and cool nights. July and August are also good, since the southwest monsoon drenching the west coast tends to leave this side of the hills drier. April through June are changeable.
In any season, expect a short afternoon shower and plan hikes for the morning. After heavy rain, leeches appear on grassy trails, so wear socks and closed shoes. Since Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025, also check that the roads and rail line on your route are open before you finalize dates.
Where to Stay
Ella town is convenient but noisy in high season, with tuk-tuks and bar music on the main street. Couples usually do better on the slopes just outside, where a 10-minute ride buys silence and a view.
The ridges toward Little Adam's Peak hold several resort-style properties. 98 Acres Resort & Spa is the best known, with chalets set among working tea bushes and big views over the valley. Smaller guesthouses up the hill toward Ella Gap often have balconies facing the gap itself and home-cooked dinners, which can be the best food in the area.
If you want a full plantation experience, consider splitting the hill country between Ella and a tea estate bungalow near Nanu Oya or Hatton. Those places are quieter and more formal, with butlers and four-course dinners. Ella works better as a walking base with a bit of life.
Romantic Things to Do
Climb Little Adam's Peak at sunrise. The path starts about 20 minutes' walk from town and climbs gently through tea, finishing on a ridge with views back toward Ella Rock and down the gap. Go early to beat the crowds that arrive by mid-morning.
Walk to the Nine Arches Bridge, roughly 45 minutes from town on foot. Check the train times at your hotel and time your visit for a crossing. The railway path to the bridge is quieter than the tuk-tuk viewpoint.
Visit a tea factory. Newburgh, about half an hour away, runs tours with tastings. Lipton's Seat, the hilltop where Thomas Lipton surveyed his estates near Haputale, makes a beautiful dawn outing about an hour's drive away. For a lazier day, book side-by-side Ayurvedic massages, which are inexpensive here.
Getting There and Around
The romantic way in is by train. Ella sits on the hill country railway a few stops from Badulla. The ride from Nanu Oya passes some of the line's finest scenery, including the Demodara loop where the track circles under itself. Cyclone Ditwah cut the line in late 2025 and service has been restored in stages since then. Check the current timetable before booking, then reserve seats as soon as they open.
By road, Ella is roughly six hours from the airport, or about four from Mirissa and the south coast through Wellawaya. Most couples arrive with their driver. Around town, walk or take tuk-tuks for short hops. Ravana Falls is about 4 miles south on the road through Ella Gap.
Food and Drink
Ella's main street feeds backpackers well and honeymooners adequately. You can get pizza, smoothie bowls and good coffee. The more memorable meals tend to be Sri Lankan and homemade: guesthouse rice and curry with a spread of eight or ten small dishes, cooked by the owner and served on the veranda. Book these by early afternoon so the cook can shop.
Kottu roti is the town's late-night staple, a stir-fry of chopped flatbread, egg and curry clanged together on a griddle. Cafe Chill, on the main street, is the long-running spot for it, with a big open dining room and cold beer.
Tea is the obvious drink. Try a straight black tea from a nearby estate, without milk, to taste the difference altitude makes. Many cafes also make ginger tea, which is welcome on a damp afternoon.
Honeymoon Tips
- Book two or three nights. One night means you see Ella only in passing between long drives.
- Pack a warm layer and a light rain jacket. Nights can feel genuinely chilly.
- Treat Ella Rock as a half-day hike. The route follows the railway and then climbs through tea. Paths can be confusing, so use a mapping app or a local guide.
- Walk the railway track with care. Trains are slow but they do come. The bridges have little room to step aside.
- Agree on tuk-tuk fares first. Some drivers steer visitors toward longer, pricier routes to the bridge.
- Avoid hiking in shorts and sandals after rain because of leeches.
