The short answer

Choose Mykonos if you want a classic Greek island honeymoon: whitewashed lanes, golden south-coast coves, a morning at ancient Delos and an easy pairing with Santorini. Choose Ibiza if you want more room to escape: a green, quiet north coast, farmhouse hotels, beach restaurants with whole grilled fish and Formentera's Caribbean-looking beaches half an hour away. Mykonos is more compact and glamorous; Ibiza is bigger, greener and easier to make peaceful.

Mykonos and Ibiza share a reputation. Each is the party island of its sea, with beach clubs where lunch turns into dancing and nights that run until dawn. Both reputations are true and both are incomplete, which is why couples keep choosing them for honeymoons.

Mykonos is a small, sun-bleached Cycladic island in the Aegean. Its Chora is a maze of white lanes and blue shutters, with the Kato Mili windmills above the sea and Little Venice's houses hanging over the water. The south coast is lined with sheltered sandy coves. Delos, one of the ancient world's most sacred sites, is a short boat ride away.

Ibiza is a larger Balearic island off Spain's east coast. Its clubs are concentrated in a small slice of the south and west, while the north is pine forest, almond terraces and clear coves. UNESCO protects the walled old town of Dalt Vila along with the Posidonia seagrass meadows that keep the water so clear.

Here is how the two compare for couples who want the beauty and only a little of the buzz.

Escaping the Party

On both islands the trick is choosing your base. On Mykonos the nightlife is woven through the Chora and the beach clubs of the south coast. The island is small, so you are never far from it. Couples who want calm book a resort with a private pool or beach, spend days in coves and on boats and visit town for sunset cocktails and a late dinner.

On Ibiza the clubs are concentrated around Sant Antoni and Playa d'en Bossa. Drive half an hour north from the airport and the noise fades into pine forest and terraced almond groves. The north, around Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Miquel and Portinatx, is the quietest and greenest part of the island. The east around Santa Eularia is relaxed with good restaurants.

Mykonos makes nightlife effortless to join. Ibiza makes it effortless to avoid. Many couples on either island never set foot in a club.

Beaches and Water

Mykonos has golden sand in sheltered south-coast coves: lively Ornos, chic Psarou and Platys Gialos, with quieter Agios Sostis in the north. The water is clear enough to count the pebbles. In July and August the meltemi wind can blow for days, making north-facing beaches rough, but the south coast usually stays sheltered.

Ibiza's coves are backed by pines and rock, with unusually clear water thanks to protected Posidonia seagrass meadows. A private boat from Santa Eularia or Ibiza Town reaches north-coast coves that cannot be reached by car. The trump card is Formentera, a flat, sandy island about 30 to 35 minutes away by fast ferry. Rent an e-bike or scooter and ride to Ses Illetes, a thin spit of white sand between two shallow bays.

For sheer beach variety, Ibiza plus Formentera wins. For short drives from hotel to sand, Mykonos is easier.

Where You Will Stay

Mykonos has two standout honeymoon hotels. Cavo Tagoo, on a cliff just north of the Chora, is the island's best-known design hotel, famous for its saltwater infinity pool and suites with private pools or hot tubs, with a 24-hour shuttle into town. Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort on Ornos Bay, offers something rare on the island: a private sandy cove, with pool villas, butler service and a kid-free infinity pool.

Ibiza's best hotels lean rural and design-led. Six Senses Ibiza sits on the far northern tip above Cala Xarraca, about 35 minutes from the airport, with rooms stepping down the hillside toward the sea. Hacienda Na Xamena clings to cliffs near Sant Miquel with famous sunset views. Atzaro, an agroturismo among orange groves inland, has a spa and pools. Many smaller hotels are converted fincas among olive and carob trees.

Mykonos does glamour; Ibiza does barefoot luxury.

Food and Sunsets

Mykonos eats remarkably well for a small island, with refined Greek tasting menus in town and seaside tavernas serving grilled fish and octopus. Look for kopanisti, a tangy cheese spread, plus louza, the island's cured pork. Sunset is a ritual: cocktails in Little Venice as waves splash below, then a stroll to the windmills and a late dinner, since locals rarely sit down before 9 p.m.

Ibiza's food is rooted in fish and farm. Bullit de peix, a fish stew followed by rice cooked in the broth, is the classic long lunch at a cove restaurant. Finish with flao (a mint-scented cheesecake) and a cold glass of hierbas. Farm restaurants grow their own vegetables. Beach restaurants serve whole grilled fish at tables on the sand. Sunset means Cala d'Hort, with the jagged islet of Es Vedra rising from the sea, or dinner in a small square in Dalt Vila.

Both need reservations in July and August, especially for tables with a view.

Culture and Days Out

Mykonos has the more significant ancient site. Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, lies about half an hour by boat from the Old Port, with temples, mosaics and the Terrace of the Lions spread across the island. Go in the morning, since there is little shade. Check opening days. Back on Mykonos, drive inland to Ano Mera for lunch in the village square, or photograph Panagia Paraportiani in the Chora.

Ibiza's culture is more recent and more bohemian. Walk up through Dalt Vila at golden hour, past the cathedral to the walls for views of the harbor. Weekend craft markets sell leather, linen and jewelry, a reminder of the island's hippie past. On Sunday evenings drummers gather at Benirras beach to play the sun down.

Couples who want history should lean to Mykonos. Couples who want a looser, artsy atmosphere will enjoy Ibiza.

Timing and Budget

The calendars are similar. On Mykonos the season runs roughly May to October, with June and September ideal; many hotels and restaurants close in winter. On Ibiza, June and September are also best, while late May and early October are pleasant with shorter hours. Much of the island closes from November to April.

Neither is cheap. Mykonos is among the most expensive islands in Greece in July and August. June and September rates are often noticeably lower. Ibiza is one of the pricier places in Spain, with luxury hotels and beach clubs that rival the Mediterranean's most expensive. Car rental prices also climb in summer. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax is charged per person per night.

On both islands, the beach-club bill is where budgets slip. Ask the price of sun beds, champagne and fish sold by weight before ordering. Save the splurge for one memorable afternoon.

Flights and Easy Add-Ons

Mykonos Airport (JMK), about 4 kilometers from town, has flights from Athens of around 25 minutes plus many European routes in summer. Most US travelers connect in Athens or another European hub. Ferries link Mykonos with Piraeus, Rafina and other Cyclades islands, including Santorini. Taxis are limited, so book hotel transfers.

For Ibiza, most couples connect through Barcelona or Madrid, about an hour away, or another European hub. United has announced a seasonal summer nonstop from Newark, so check whether it operates on your dates. The airport is about 15 minutes from Ibiza Town. Rent a car or hire a driver, since many coves and country hotels are far from bus routes.

The add-ons point to different trips. Mykonos pairs naturally with Santorini for the classic two-island Greek honeymoon. Ibiza pairs with Formentera for beaches and with Barcelona or Madrid for a city finale, making an easy ten days in Spain.
