Why Honeymoon in Bohemian Switzerland
This is the Czech Republic at its wildest. After the crowds of Prague, the forests and rock formations feel like another world. The landscape looks almost unreal, with sandstone pillars rising out of the trees and mist hanging in the valleys at dawn.
It suits couples who enjoy walking. Most trails are moderate, with steps and handrails at viewpoints, so you do not need to be serious hikers.
The area also has charm beyond nature. Villages like Hřensko, Jetřichovice and Mezná have half-timbered houses and simple inns. Across the border in Germany, Saxon Switzerland offers more viewpoints, including the famous Bastei bridge, which makes a good day trip.
The pace is slow, which is the point: days on the trails and evenings with local beer and hearty food.
When to Go
May, June and September are the best months. The weather is mild for hiking, the forests are fresh and the gorge boats are running. Highs are typically in the 60s and low 70s°F.
July and August are warmest and busiest, especially on weekends, when day-trippers from Prague and Dresden fill the main trails and boats. Go early in the day for a quieter experience.
October brings autumn colors and is lovely for hiking, though some services begin to close for the season. The gorge boats usually run from around April to the end of October.
Winter is cold, often snowy or icy. Many trails become slippery. Some attractions close or shorten their hours. It can be beautiful but is better for experienced walkers.
Where to Stay
Hřensko, a small village on the Elbe at the entrance to the park, is the most convenient base for Pravčická brána and the gorges. It has guesthouses and small hotels, many in old buildings along the river.
Jetřichovice and Mezná are quieter villages on the plateau with access to viewpoints and forest trails. They suit couples who want a calm rural stay.
Děčín, a larger town about 20 minutes away, has more hotels and restaurants, plus a castle and a train station with direct connections to Prague.
Lodging is mostly simple and cozy rather than luxurious. Book ahead for summer weekends. Expect roughly $70–$160 a night for a good double, approximate.
Romantic Things to Do
- Hike to Pravčická brána, the giant sandstone arch. The trail from Hřensko climbs through the forest. A small admission charge applies at the viewing area near the Falcon's Nest building of 1881.
- Take a boat ride through the Wild Gorge on the Kamenice River, poled by boatmen between high rock walls.
- Check whether Edmund's Gorge is open. It reopened after the fire in a limited form with guided boat trips. Access may change.
- Climb to the Mariina viewpoint near Jetřichovice for a view over endless forest.
- Cross into Germany to see the Bastei bridge and rock formations of Saxon Switzerland.
- Explore Děčín Castle and its gardens.
Getting There and Around
Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) has nonstop flights from New York JFK, while most other US routes connect through European hubs. From Prague, Bohemian Switzerland is about an hour and 45 minutes by car.
By public transport, take the train from Prague to Děčín, which takes around an hour and a half to two hours. Then take a bus to Hřensko. In summer, buses can be busy, so plan ahead.
A car gives the most flexibility for reaching different trailheads and villages. Parking in Hřensko can fill up on summer weekends.
Many couples visit on a day trip from Prague, but staying overnight lets you hike early and late when trails are quieter.
Food and Drink
Food here is classic Czech country cooking. Expect roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, goulash, fried cheese and river trout.
Village inns and guesthouses often have restaurants with outdoor terraces where you can relax after a hike. Czech beer is excellent and inexpensive. Many inns serve local brews.
For sweets, look for fruit dumplings and strudel in season.
Prices are lower than in Prague. Expect dinner for two with drinks around $40–$90, approximate. Some restaurants close early in the evening or keep limited hours outside summer, so check before heading out.
Honeymoon Tips
Check the national park's website before your trip. Some areas affected by the 2022 fire remain closed. The park warns of falling trees in burned areas. Stay on marked trails.
Wear sturdy shoes with good grip. Trails include steps, ladders and uneven rock.
Start early in summer. The main trails and gorge boats get busy by late morning, especially on weekends.
Bring cash for small purchases, boat tickets and village inns, though cards are increasingly accepted.
Pair the park with Prague. Two or three nights here after a city stay is an easy and refreshing balance.
