The short answer

The Kerala backwaters are India's most restful honeymoon stop: a private houseboat night on Vembanad Lake, then two or three nights at a lakeside resort in Kumarakom. Go November to February for warm, dry days; the June–July monsoon is lush and cheaper but very wet. It suits couples who want stillness, Ayurveda and Kerala cooking. Houseboat prices vary widely by season and boat quality, so confirm exactly what is included. Don't miss a dawn canoe ride through the narrow village canals.

  • Couples who want slow, quiet days
  • Pairs curious about Ayurveda
  • Travelers pairing Kochi with Munnar

  • You get restless without activities
  • Heat and mosquitoes bother you a lot

Kerala's backwaters are a maze of lakes, rivers and canals running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, fed by dozens of rivers coming down from the Western Ghats. People live along the banks in narrow strips of land between paddy fields and water. Children row to school, women wash pots at the water's edge and ducks are herded down the canals like sheep.

The classic way to see it is from a kettuvallam, a long wooden houseboat with a curved roof of woven palm and bamboo. These boats once carried rice and spices to the port at Kochi. Today hundreds of them have been fitted with bedrooms, decks and kitchens. Many couples consider a night aboard the highlight of their India honeymoon.

The area centers on Alappuzha (Alleppey) and Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala. Most couples pair one night on a houseboat with two or three nights at a lakeside resort, where Ayurvedic treatments, canoe trips and long lunches fill the days.

Why Honeymoon in the Kerala Backwaters

It is the most restful experience India offers. After the noise of Delhi or the long drives of Rajasthan, a day drifting past coconut groves and rice paddies feels like a reset. There is very little to do and that is the point.

A private houseboat is also unusually intimate. You have a crew of two or three who cook, steer and then disappear, leaving the deck to the two of you. Meals are fresh Kerala cooking made in the boat's kitchen and you tie up for the night by a quiet stretch of bank.

The resorts on Vembanad Lake are built around this calm. Many are made of old Kerala wooden houses moved and reassembled on the waterfront. Kerala is also the home of Ayurveda, India's traditional medicine. Treatments here are taken seriously, with trained therapists and long programs if you want them.

When to Go

November to February is the best time. Days are warm and dry, humidity is lower and the light is soft. It is also the busiest and priciest period, especially around Christmas and New Year.

March through May is hot and humid, with temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit and sticky nights. Houseboats with air-conditioned bedrooms are a must then.

The southwest monsoon arrives in early June and brings heavy rain through July. Houseboats still run and the scenery is very green, but downpours can be intense and cruises may be shortened. Ayurveda practitioners consider the monsoon the best season for treatments. Some resorts run special programs.

August and September bring easing rain and Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, plus the famous snake boat races. October has occasional storms from the northeast monsoon but is otherwise pleasant and quieter.

Where to Stay

Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, has the most polished resorts. Kumarakom Lake Resort is known for its heritage villas and a winding pool, while Coconut Lagoon, part of the CGH Earth group, is reached only by boat and uses restored old Kerala houses. Taj Kumarakom Resort occupies a colonial-era property on the lake.

Alappuzha, the main houseboat hub, has more boats and simpler hotels. It is also closer to the beach. Marari Beach, also by CGH Earth, sits on the coast nearby and pairs well with a houseboat night.

For the houseboat itself, book a private one-bedroom or two-bedroom boat with air-conditioning through a reputable operator or your hotel. Quality varies widely, so ask about the age of the boat, the crew and whether the route avoids the crowded main channels.

Romantic Things to Do

The houseboat night is the main event. Most overnight cruises board around midday, drift through the afternoon with lunch and tea served on deck, then tie up for the night by early evening. You return after breakfast the next morning.

For a closer look at village life, take a small canoe or shikara into the narrow canals that large houseboats cannot reach. Go at dawn, when the water is still and kingfishers are hunting.

Visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in the early morning for herons, egrets and cormorants. Book a couples' Ayurvedic massage at your resort; many offer traditional oil treatments and steam baths.

If you visit in August or September, watch a snake boat race, when long narrow boats rowed by dozens of men speed across the water to the sound of drums. The Nehru Trophy race on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha is the most famous.

Getting There and Around

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the gateway and has frequent domestic flights plus international connections through the Gulf. From the airport, Alappuzha and Kumarakom are each about two hours by car. Most resorts arrange pickups.

Many couples spend a night or two in Fort Kochi first, about an hour from the airport, to see the old Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets and spice warehouses. From there, the drive south to the backwaters takes about one and a half hours.

On the backwaters, transport is by boat. Resorts have their own boats for excursions and transfers. Public ferries run between Alappuzha and Kottayam and are cheap and scenic if you want a short local ride.

Munnar in the hills is about four to five hours by road from Kumarakom, making the two a natural pairing.

Food and Drink

Kerala food is built on coconut, rice, fresh fish and spices. On a houseboat, expect meals such as fish curry in a red tamarind sauce, vegetable thoran with grated coconut, sambar and red rice, along with appam (lacy rice pancakes) with chicken or vegetable stew for breakfast.

The local specialty is karimeen pollichathu, pearl spot fish marinated in spices and cooked in a banana leaf. Order it at least once.

Toddy shops serve the slightly sour palm wine tapped from coconut trees along with spicy dishes such as duck roast, fried fish and tapioca. They are rustic, so go with a guide or ask your resort to recommend a clean one.

On Onam, the harvest festival, families share a sadya, a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf with more than 20 dishes. Several resorts serve a version year-round.

Honeymoon Tips

  • One night on a houseboat is enough for most couples. Two nights can feel long unless you love total stillness.
  • Choose a houseboat with an air-conditioned bedroom, especially from March to October. Many boats only run AC at night.
  • Bring mosquito repellent and light long sleeves for evenings on the water.
  • Ask for a quiet route away from the busiest channels near Alappuzha's main jetty.
  • Tell the crew about any food preferences in advance and let them know how spicy you like things.
  • Tip the houseboat crew at the end of the trip in cash.

FAQ

Kerala Backwaters honeymoon FAQ

Is a houseboat night worth it on a honeymoon?

Yes, for most couples. A private houseboat gives you a quiet day on the water, meals cooked for you and a night away from everyone. It is one of India's most romantic experiences. Book a well-maintained boat with an air-conditioned bedroom. Plan just one night unless you are sure you want more stillness.

Should we stay in Alappuzha or Kumarakom?

Kumarakom has the more upscale lakeside resorts and is quieter, with birdlife and calm water. Alappuzha is the houseboat hub, busier and more local. It is also close to beaches such as Marari. Many couples board a houseboat in Alappuzha or Kumarakom and spend the remaining nights at a Kumarakom resort or Marari Beach.

Can we visit the backwaters during the monsoon?

Yes. Houseboats operate year-round and the monsoon months from June to September are lush and dramatic, with lower prices. Expect heavy downpours, high humidity and some shortened cruises. Many people choose this season for Ayurvedic treatments, which are considered most effective in the cooler, damp weather.

How much does a private houseboat cost?

Prices vary widely by season, boat quality and number of bedrooms. A basic private boat costs much less than a premium one with large windows, an upper deck and better food. Book through your hotel or a reputable operator, confirm exactly what is included and expect higher rates in peak months and holiday weeks.

How do we combine the backwaters with other places?

The backwaters fit easily into a Kerala loop. Fly into Kochi, spend a night in Fort Kochi, head to Munnar for two nights in the tea hills, then come down to Kumarakom or Alappuzha for a houseboat and resort stay. Finish at a beach such as Marari or fly onward to the Maldives.
