Why Honeymoon in Yogyakarta
A Bali honeymoon can blur into pools and beach clubs. Jogja gives you a few days with a different texture. You climb a 1,200-year-old monument in soft morning light, watch dancers act out the Ramayana with floodlit temples behind them and learn how batik is drawn in hot wax.
It suits couples who like history and food more than resort time, though it also has a few genuinely romantic hotels. Amanjiwo, the Aman resort facing Borobudur, is one of the most distinctive places to stay in Indonesia, with a domed rotunda that echoes the temple.
Costs are lower than in Bali. A private driver for the day, excellent street food and boutique rooms all cost noticeably less.
When to Go
The dry season, roughly May to September, is the best time for temple visits. Mornings are clear and the Ramayana ballet can use its open-air stage beside Prambanan. Days are hot, so plan sightseeing early and late.
April and October are decent shoulder months with some showers.
The wet season runs about November to March. Afternoon downpours are heavy but usually brief. Mornings are often fine for Borobudur. The ballet moves indoors during the rainy months.
Vesak, the Buddhist holy day at the full moon in May or June, brings a procession from Mendut temple to Borobudur. It is moving to see but crowded. Access to the monument is restricted. Avoid Indonesian school holidays and the week after Eid if you can, when domestic travel peaks.
Where to Stay
Split your stay between the countryside and the city.
- Around Borobudur, the hotels sit among rice paddies and coconut groves with views of the volcanoes. Amanjiwo and Plataran Borobudur are the best-known upscale choices. Smaller boutique lodges offer good value.
- In the city, stay near the Kraton or in a quiet area a short ride from Malioboro. The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta occupies a colonial-era building. The Royal Ambarrukmo stands beside a former royal pavilion. Both have heritage character.
- Prawirotaman, south of the Kraton, has guesthouses, cafes and art shops with a relaxed feel.
Good boutique hotels in the city cost very roughly $60–150 a night. Luxury around Borobudur runs much higher (approximate).
Romantic Things to Do
Visit Borobudur early. Climbing the upper terraces is limited to a daily quota, with guided entry and special sandals provided to protect the stone, so book well ahead through official channels. Even from the base, watching mist lift off the surrounding hills is worth the alarm clock.
Spend a late afternoon at Prambanan, then stay for the Ramayana ballet. Dozens of dancers and a gamelan orchestra perform the epic, with the temple towers lit behind the stage in the dry season.
In the city, wander the Taman Sari water castle, built in 1765 as a royal pleasure garden. Then visit the Kraton, the sultan's palace. Take a jeep tour up the slopes of Mount Merapi to see lava fields and villages rebuilt after the 2010 eruption.
Getting There and Around
There are no nonstop flights from the US. Most couples fly to Jakarta (CGK) or Bali (DPS) via an Asian or Gulf hub, then take a domestic flight to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). The flight from Bali takes a bit over an hour.
YIA lies in Kulon Progo, about 45 km west of the city. The airport rail link reaches Yogyakarta's main station in about 35 to 40 minutes. A private car is easier with luggage.
Comfortable trains also link Jogja with Jakarta in about seven to eight hours, a scenic alternative to flying.
In the city, ride-hailing cars are cheap and easy. Becak cycle rickshaws are fun for short hops; agree on the fare first. For the temples, hire a car and driver for the day.
Food and Drink
Jogja's signature dish is gudeg: young jackfruit slow-cooked with palm sugar and coconut milk until it turns sweet and tender. It comes with rice, chicken, egg and krecek, a spicy beef-skin stew that cuts the sweetness. Wijilan, near the Kraton, is a street of gudeg specialists.
Try bakpia, small pastries filled with mung bean paste. Try kopi joss too, coffee served with a glowing lump of charcoal dropped in at the night stalls near Tugu station.
For a romantic dinner, several restaurants around Borobudur serve Javanese tasting menus with volcano views. In the city, Prawirotaman has relaxed garden restaurants.
Alcohol is available at hotels and tourist restaurants but less common elsewhere. Drink bottled water.
Honeymoon Tips
Dress modestly at temples, the Kraton and mosques. Both of you should cover shoulders and knees. Sarongs are provided at some sites.
At the Kraton and Taman Sari, guides attached to the sites expect tips. Politely decline offers of side trips to batik galleries, which often carry steep prices.
To tell hand-drawn batik from printed fabric, look at the back: hand-drawn work is vivid on both sides.
Mount Merapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Jeep tours follow official exclusion zones, but check the status before booking.
Dengue is present in Java, so use repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
