Start with three nights on Mahé for jungle trails and quiet coves, take the ferry to Praslin for four nights of palm forest, Anse Lazio and a bike day on La Digue, then fly 30 minutes to Denis Island for three nights on a coral island with one small resort. It suits couples who want beach time with some adventure. April, May, October and November bring the calmest seas.

The Seychelles are made for island hopping. Three islands make a well-balanced honeymoon. Mahé, the main island, has rainforest peaks, granite coves and the international airport. Praslin and its neighbor La Digue are the postcard Seychelles: sculpted pink boulders, the palm forest of the Vallée de Mai and beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source d'Argent. Denis Island, a flat coral island to the north, is the finish, with one small resort, white sand and no phone signal.

The moves are simple. A fast ferry runs from Mahé to Praslin in about an hour. La Digue is a 15-minute ferry from Praslin, so you visit it as a day trip. Denis is a 30-minute flight from Mahé on a small plane.

There are no nonstop flights from the US, so most couples connect through a Gulf, European or African hub. Plan on about a day of travel each way. Give yourselves a slow first day on Mahé.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Mahé

Land at Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé's east coast, 15 to 45 minutes from most hotels. Four Seasons Resort Seychelles has hillside pool villas above Petite Anse, one of Mahé's loveliest bays. MAIA is another luxury option with private villas. Small guesthouses cost far less and often come with home-cooked Creole dinners.

Spend day one by the pool or on your bay. On day two, hike the Anse Major coastal trail in the Morne Seychellois National Park, about an hour each way through granite and forest to a secluded beach, or climb Copolia for a summit view over the island. Start early to avoid the midday heat.

On day three, snorkel in Sainte Anne Marine National Park off Victoria, swim at Anse Intendance if the sea is calm and finish with Creole curry and rum at the Takamaka distillery. The Victoria market is good for spices and fresh fish if you are in town on a weekday morning.

Days 4–7: Praslin and La Digue

Take the fast ferry from Victoria to Praslin, about an hour, or a 15-minute flight. Raffles Seychelles sits on Praslin's north coast with pool villas and ocean views. Six Senses Zil Pasyon, on Félicité Island near La Digue, is a private-island-style splurge reached by boat.

On day five, walk through the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO-listed palm forest where the giant coco de mer grows and rare black parrots call from the trees. In the afternoon, swim at Anse Lazio, one of the most photographed beaches in the Seychelles.

On day six, take the ferry to La Digue, about 15 minutes. Rent bicycles at the jetty and ride to Anse Source d'Argent, where granite boulders frame shallow turquoise water. Go around high tide for the best swimming. Stop for fresh fruit juice and a Creole lunch before riding back. Day seven is your slow day: a long lunch, a nap and snorkeling off Praslin's quieter beaches, or a boat trip to the nearby islands of Curieuse and St Pierre.

Days 8–10: Denis Island

Ferry or fly back to Mahé, then take the light-aircraft flight to Denis Island, about 30 minutes north over open ocean. Denis Private Island has a small number of cottages on a flat coral island ringed by white sand. There is no phone signal in the rooms, which is the point.

On day nine, walk the beach circuit around the island, about two hours at an easy pace, stopping to swim wherever you like. Snorkel the reef on the lagoon side, or go deep-sea fishing beyond the drop-off, where the water falls away into deep blue. Birders should look for the rare Seychelles warbler and fody, part of the island's conservation work.

Day ten is for doing nothing together. Climb to the old lighthouse for a view across the island, book a massage and eat dinner on the beach under the stars. Turtles nest on Denis in season, so ask the staff whether any are expected while you are there.

Day 11: Flying Home

Fly back from Denis Island to Mahé, about 30 minutes, timed around your international flight. Light-aircraft flights depend on the weather, so leave a generous buffer before your connection. Some couples book a day room near the airport or spend a last afternoon on a Mahé beach.

Flights to the US connect through hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa or a European city, with total travel times of roughly 20 hours or more. Booking all flights on one ticket helps if a connection is missed.

If you have time between flights, browse the Victoria market for vanilla, spices and local rum to take home.

Getting Between Stops

Fly into Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé, connecting through a Gulf, European or African hub.

Between islands, fast ferries run from Victoria on Mahé to Praslin in about an hour, several times a day. Seas can be choppy, especially from May to September, so take seasickness medication if you need it. Domestic flights from Mahé to Praslin take about 15 minutes and are smoother. Ferries run from Praslin to La Digue in about 15 minutes.

Denis Island is reached by a light-aircraft flight of about 30 minutes from Mahé, arranged by the resort. Small planes have strict baggage weight limits, so pack light and use soft bags.

On Mahé and Praslin, rent a small car or use taxis. The Seychelles drive on the left. Roads are narrow and steep. On La Digue, bicycles are the main way to get around.

Where to Stay

On Mahé, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles has hillside pool villas above Petite Anse. MAIA offers private villas with butler service. Guesthouses and self-catering apartments are good value and often family-run.

On Praslin, Raffles Seychelles has pool villas on the north coast. Six Senses Zil Pasyon on Félicité Island, near La Digue, is a splurge with its own beaches and boat transfers. Smaller hotels and guesthouses on Praslin and La Digue cost far less.

On Denis Island, Denis Private Island is the only resort, with cottages close to the beach and meals included. It costs less than the most exclusive private islands in the Seychelles but still feels remote. If you want even more privacy, North Island and Desroches are pricier alternatives.

When to Go

April to May and October to November are the best months, between the two trade-wind seasons. Seas are calm, the water is clear and snorkeling is at its best.

From May to September, the southeast trade winds bring cooler, drier weather but rougher seas, especially on southeast-facing coasts. Seaweed can wash up on some beaches. Ferries can be bumpy.

From December to March, the northwest monsoon brings hotter, more humid weather with heavier rain, though it often comes in short bursts. This is also a busy time around Christmas and New Year.

The Seychelles are warm all year, so there is no bad time to go. Dengue and chikungunya are present, so use insect repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you book.

What It Costs

The Seychelles are expensive, but there is a wide range. As an approximate guide, luxury resorts such as Four Seasons Resort Seychelles cost about $1,500 or more a night for two. Raffles Seychelles costs less, while Six Senses Zil Pasyon is in the upper range. Denis Private Island costs about $1,300 to $2,000 or more a night with meals included, depending on season.

Guesthouses and self-catering apartments cost a fraction of resort prices. Local takeaways sell Creole curries cheaply.

Add ferries, domestic flights, the light-aircraft flight to Denis, bike rental on La Digue, the Vallée de Mai ticket and boat trips. Plan for long-haul flights from the US, which are often the biggest single cost of the trip.

Tips for the Two of You

The Seychelles are casual. Pack swimwear, light clothes, sandals and something slightly smarter for resort dinners. Bring reef shoes, a rash shirt and reef-safe sunscreen, since the equatorial sun is intense.

Some beaches have strong currents, especially Grand Anse on La Digue and Anse Intendance on Mahé during the southeast trade winds. Swim where locals swim, check with your hotel and stay out of the water when red flags fly.

The route works for different interests. One of you might hike the Anse Major trail or go deep-sea fishing on Denis while the other snorkels, reads or books a spa treatment. Cycle together on La Digue and meet up for long lunches. Watch for falling coconuts. Avoid sitting directly under palms.

Make It Shorter or Longer

With a week, skip Denis and spend two nights on Mahé and five on Praslin, with a day trip to La Digue. Or skip Mahé and spend four nights on Praslin and three on Denis.

With two weeks, add three or four nights on La Digue itself, staying in a guesthouse so you can cycle to Anse Source d'Argent early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. Another option is Silhouette Island, a short boat ride from Mahé, for rainforest hikes and a quiet resort.

For a bigger splurge, swap Denis for a private island such as North Island or one of the outer islands, like Desroches. Mauritius is another option for a combined Indian Ocean trip, with flights between the two islands taking about two and a half hours.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Is the Seychelles good for a honeymoon?

Yes. The Seychelles have some of the world's most beautiful beaches, granite boulders, clear water for snorkeling and a range of romantic resorts, from hillside villas on Mahé to remote coral islands. The trip is long from the US, so plan at least nine or ten nights.

How many islands should we visit in the Seychelles?

Two or three islands work well on a 10- to 12-day trip. Mahé, Praslin with a day trip to La Digue and a remote coral island like Denis give you variety without too many moves. Spend at least three nights on each island.

Is La Digue worth a day trip?

Yes. La Digue is a 15-minute ferry from Praslin and has some of the most famous beaches in the Seychelles, including Anse Source d'Argent. Rent bicycles at the jetty and ride around the island. Couples who want quiet mornings there should stay a few nights instead.

When is the best time for a Seychelles honeymoon?

April to May and October to November are best, with calm seas and clear water. May to September brings trade winds and rougher seas on some coasts. December to March is hotter, more humid and wetter. The Seychelles are warm all year.

How do we get to Denis Island?

Denis Island is reached by a light-aircraft flight of about 30 minutes from Mahé, which the resort arranges. Small planes have strict baggage limits, so pack light. Flights depend on the weather, so leave a buffer before your international connection home.
