At a glance

Three nights in San Juan, four on the island of Vieques and three at a luxury beach resort in Dorado, 35 to 45 minutes from the airport. It suits couples who want history and late dinners, a simple island with empty beaches and then a polished finish. Go December through May, timing Vieques near the new moon for the brightest bio bay.

Puerto Rico packs three different honeymoons into one short flight from the mainland. This 11-day route spends three nights in San Juan, four on Vieques and three in Dorado, with a small plane or ferry hop in the middle and a 35 to 45 minute drive at the end.

San Juan is the lively start: blue cobblestones, Spanish forts on the sea, salsa and late dinners. Vieques is the slow stretch, an unpolished island with a jeep, refuge beaches you may have to yourselves and Mosquito Bay, where the water glows around your paddle on a dark night. Dorado is the splurge, a quiet luxury resort on the north coast close enough to the airport that you can relax on the last morning.

The order follows local advice. Ferries to Vieques are canceled more often than visitors expect, so the trip ends on the main island. December through May is the best window. Try to time your Vieques nights around the new moon.

Day by day

Days 1–3: San Juan

Fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), which has nonstops from more than 30 mainland US cities. Old San Juan is about 25 minutes away. Hotel El Convento, a former Carmelite convent beside the cathedral, is the classic choice in the old city. In Condado, the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel is a grand 1919 building on the water.

Plan the forts for your first morning, while you are still waking early on East Coast time. Walk the city walls to El Morro as the sea turns from gray to blue. That quiet early walk is the romantic moment of this stop. Save the beach for midday.

On day two, wander the side streets and plazas of the old city, then take a sunset sail out of San Juan Bay. After dinner, go dancing at La Factoría, where the salsa starts late.

On day three, choose a rum tasting at Casa Bacardí or a long lunch of fritters and seafood in Piñones, east of the city. Wear shoes with grip, since the cobblestones are slippery after rain.

Days 4–7: Vieques

Fly from SJU to Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS) on a small plane, about 30 minutes with low views of the east coast cays. Cape Air flies from the main airport. The cheaper option is the ferry from Ceiba, about an hour by car from San Juan, then roughly an hour at sea. Buy tickets online in advance.

Rent a jeep, since many beach roads are rutted dirt tracks. Esperanza, on the south coast, is the best base, with dinner along the malecón. Hacienda Tamarindo, a hilltop inn built around an enormous tamarind tree, is a long-running favorite. Hix Island House sits in the wooded hills. El Blok is a modern hotel on the Esperanza waterfront.

Spend your days hopping refuge beaches by jeep, with water, snacks and shade, since facilities are limited. Watch the sunset at Green Beach. Walk to Playa Negra.

The romantic moment is a kayak through Mosquito Bay on the darkest night of your stay, when every stroke lights up blue. Reserve as soon as you know your dates. A boat day to Culebra is a good extra.

Days 8–11: Dorado

Return to the main island by plane or ferry on day eight, then drive or transfer to Dorado on the north coast. This is your splurge. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, sits on about 1,400 acres of former plantation land, with many rooms opening onto the sand, a spa built into the trees and several pools.

Use these days slowly. Spend a beach day at Sardinera, kayak the Río La Plata or book a couples' treatment at the spa. Golfers can play the oceanfront course at Dorado Beach East. If you crave one more city evening, Old San Juan is close enough for dinner.

On your final night, book an oceanfront table and watch the light fade over the Atlantic.

On day eleven, the drive to SJU takes 35 to 45 minutes. Leave extra time for San Juan traffic at rush hour.

Getting Between Stops

San Juan to Vieques has two options. Small planes from San Juan's main airport take about 30 minutes and are the more reliable choice, though baggage limits are strict, so pack soft bags. Vieques Air Link has also flown from Ceiba and San Juan's Isla Grande airport. The ferry from Ceiba is cheap but sells out on weekends and holidays. Schedules also change month to month.

If you take the ferry, rent a car in Condado for the day you leave the city. Agencies have counters at the airport and in Condado. You will need a jeep on Vieques itself, since public transport is thin.

From Vieques back to the main island, fly to SJU and drive about 35 to 45 minutes west to Dorado. Within San Juan, walk the old city and use Uber for short rides.

Where to Stay

In San Juan, Old San Juan suits couples who want atmosphere over a beach. Hotel El Convento has a courtyard and a small rooftop pool. Condado is the polished beach neighborhood, with the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel as its landmark. Isla Verde, near the airport, has the widest beach and larger resorts.

On Vieques, Esperanza is walkable and close to the bio bay launch points. The hills between the two towns hold most of the villas, many with plunge pools and sunset decks. Before paying a deposit, ask whether a jeep is included, since island fleets sell out in high season.

In Dorado, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve is the standout. The Hyatt Hacienda del Mar offers villa-style units for a lower price. Check whether your San Juan rate includes a resort fee and parking, since both add up.

When to Go

December through May is the best window. Rain is light, the sea on Vieques's south coast is usually calm and bio bay tours run with fewer weather cancellations. January through April is the busiest stretch, so book flights, ferries and lodging early. San Juan's San Sebastián Street Festival in January is a huge party that some couples love and others avoid.

The moon matters on Vieques. Mosquito Bay glows brightest when the sky is darkest, so plan your four nights around the new moon if you can. Tour operators publish schedules by moon phase.

June and July are hotter but still good, with better rates. August through October is peak hurricane season. Some Vieques guesthouses and restaurants close for a few weeks then. Ferry service can be disrupted. On the north coast, winter swells can make some Dorado beaches rough.

Budget and Booking

This route mixes mid-range and luxury. As an approximate guide, good San Juan hotels run from about $250 to $600 a night for two. Vieques inns and villas cost roughly $150 to $400. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, is often well over $1,000 a night in high season.

Book the bio bay kayak as soon as you know your dates, choosing the darkest night of your stay. Reserve your small-plane seats or ferry tickets and your jeep at the same time as your Vieques lodging.

Tell your San Juan hotel you are on your honeymoon when you book. Upgrades are far more likely when you ask ahead than at the desk. Cash is useful for kiosks and some taxis on Vieques, where ATMs are limited to the two towns.

Staying Comfortable and Safe

Some north coast beaches have strong currents and few lifeguards, especially in winter. Swim where locals swim, follow posted warnings and stick to protected stretches in Condado, Isla Verde and Dorado.

On Vieques, refuge beaches have gates with opening hours, roughly daylight only. Leave nothing in the jeep, since break-ins at remote lots happen. Give the island's free-roaming horses space and drive slowly at night, when they stand in the road without warning. Bring a light rain jacket for the bio bay.

Dengue occurs in Puerto Rico and outbreaks have been declared in recent years. Bring insect repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices. Use reef-safe sunscreen. For dinner in Dorado, resort-casual is the norm, with collared shirts and smart dresses or slacks.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a 7-day trip, spend two nights in San Juan and four on Vieques, then fly home from SJU on day seven. Leave a full buffer on travel day, since ferry and small-plane delays happen. Or skip Vieques and split the week between Old San Juan and Dorado for an easy, two-hotel honeymoon.

With 13 to 14 days, add a few nights on Culebra, the smaller neighboring island, known for Flamenco Beach and calm snorkeling. Club Seabourne, above Fulladoza Bay, is a small hotel there. Or add El Yunque rainforest and the surf town of Rincón on the west coast, which need a rental car.

Whatever you add, keep the last night on the main island so a canceled ferry never costs you your flight home.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Should we fly or take the ferry to Vieques?

Flying is more reliable. Small planes from San Juan take about 30 minutes, with strict baggage limits. The ferry from Ceiba is cheaper and takes about an hour at sea, but it sells out on weekends and is canceled more often than visitors expect. Book either option early.

When is the bio bay on Vieques brightest?

Mosquito Bay glows brightest on the darkest nights, around the new moon. A full-moon week still works, but the light is noticeably weaker. Tour operators publish schedules by moon phase, which makes a handy planning calendar. Reserve your kayak tour as soon as you know your dates.

Why end in Dorado rather than San Juan?

Dorado gives you a quiet luxury beach finish only 35 to 45 minutes from the airport. Ending on the main island protects you against ferry delays. Couples who prefer a city finish can swap Dorado for two more nights in Old San Juan or Condado.

Do we need a car in Puerto Rico?

Not in San Juan, where walking and Uber work well. On Vieques, a jeep is essential because beach roads are rough and taxis are spread thin. In Dorado, resort transfers and golf carts cover most needs, though a car helps if you want to explore the north coast.

Is Puerto Rico a good honeymoon for first-time Caribbean travelers?

Yes. Flights from the mainland are domestic, the currency is the US dollar and US phone plans usually work without roaming charges. You get history, nightlife, quiet islands and a luxury resort in one trip, with short transfers throughout.
