El Blok is a kid-free design hotel on the malecón in Esperanza, the waterfront village on the south coast of Vieques. It is the place to stay if you want to walk to dinner, wake up across the street from the sea and spend your evenings in the liveliest corner of the island. The building is a curved, modern block with rooms around its outer edge, so most look out through big windows onto balconies.
There are 30 rooms, designed with couples in mind. Guests must be 18 or older. Downstairs, Placita restaurant serves dinner, while a rooftop space and a live music venue called La Tertulia give the hotel more of a social pulse than most places on Vieques.
El Blok suits couples who want a stylish, affordable base with things happening nearby. It is less suited to couples who want silence at night, a big pool or acres of garden. For that, look at the hillside inns and villas inland. As a starting point for bio bay trips, beach days and sunset drinks on the waterfront, it is hard to beat.
Highlights at a glance

Why Couples Choose El Blok
Most Vieques lodging is either a rustic guesthouse or a rental villa up a dirt road. El Blok gives you something different: a clean-lined, contemporary hotel in the middle of Esperanza with a restaurant on site and no need to drive after dinner. On an island where nights are dark and roads are shared with wild horses, that matters.
The kid-free policy keeps the mood relaxed. You can walk out the front door to the malecón, cross the street to the water and stroll to the bars and restaurants along the promenade. Sun Bay, one of the island's best swimming beaches, is a short drive east. Most Mosquito Bay tours meet nearby.
The trade-off is noise. Esperanza is not loud by city standards, but weekend nights and live music carry. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the music venue.
Which Room to Book
Skip the entry Estandar rooms and book an Esquina or a Solana for a honeymoon. The Esquina rooms sit on the outer corners of the circular building, with two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows and double balconies, which makes them the brightest and most spacious. They start from about $187 a night.
The Solana rooms add a private terrace as well as a large double balcony looking over the mangroves, good for afternoon sun and stargazing after dark. They start from about $210.
Estandar rooms, from about $153, have custom furnishings and a balcony view but less space. El Doblé, with two queen beds, overlooks La Tertulia and is better for friends than for a honeymoon. All prices are approximate and change with dates.
Food, Drink and Evenings
Placita, the hotel's restaurant, is the convenient choice for a first night when you arrive tired from the ferry or flight. Reserve a table in high season, when the whole village is busy.
The Rooftop hosts events and gives you a view over the bay. La Tertulia, the live music venue, is part of what makes El Blok feel lively rather than sleepy.
Beyond the hotel, the malecón has a string of casual bars and restaurants within a few minutes' walk, from fish tacos to cocktails at sunset. Vieques restaurants keep short and seasonal hours. Several close for part of the low season. Check what is open when you arrive and book anything special ahead.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do From Esperanza
Mosquito Bay is the reason many couples come to Vieques. Several tour operators meet in or near Esperanza, so the bio bay is an easy evening. Book for a night close to the new moon, when the glow is strongest.
By day, cross the street for a swim, drive a few minutes to Sun Bay or head into the wildlife refuge for quieter beaches such as Caracas, Pata Prieta and La Chiva, where you may share the sand with one or two other couples. The snorkeling at Las Rompeolas near Esperanza is good for beginners.
You will need a jeep for the refuge beaches. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and repellent for dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Puerto Rico before you go.
Getting There
Fly into Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) in San Juan, then take a small plane to Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS) on Vieques, about 30 minutes in the air. The other route is the ferry from Ceiba on the east coast of the main island, which takes about an hour. Ferries are cheaper but can sell out and run late, so leave margin in your plans.
From the airport or the ferry dock in Isabel Segunda, Esperanza is a short drive across the island. Rent a jeep for your stay and book it with your room, since fleets on Vieques are small.
Puerto Rico is a US territory, so flights from the mainland are domestic.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, if you want location and style for a moderate price. Rooms start from about $153 a night, with the better corner and terrace rooms from about $187 to $210, which is good value for a kid-free design hotel across the street from the sea. Treat these as approximate starting rates; holidays and winter weekends cost more.
What you do not get is a resort: there is no spa, no large pool area and no beachfront lounge service. Rooms are stylish rather than enormous. Couples who want quiet nights, a private plunge pool or a big garden should rent a villa in the hills or look at Hix Island House. Couples who like to walk to dinner and enjoy a little nightlife will find El Blok fits Vieques well.
Insider tips
- Book an Esquina or Solana room; the extra cost buys more light and outdoor space.
- Light sleepers should ask for a room on the side away from La Tertulia.
- Reserve your first night's dinner at Placita so you do not have to go hunting for an open restaurant after traveling.
- Rent a jeep for the refuge beaches; the malecón is walkable but the best sand is a drive away.
