At a glance

The long version of the classic Sri Lanka and Maldives honeymoon: three nights at Sigiriya, two in Kandy, the hill-country train to Ella for three, four inside Galle Fort, then a 90-minute flight to Malé and a domestic hop south for seven nights in Laamu Atoll. It suits couples with three weeks who want culture, scenery and a proper rest. Go from December to April.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives are an hour and a half apart by air. They are also opposites in the best way. Sri Lanka fills your days with ancient cities, elephants, tea plantations and a colonial fort by the sea. The Maldives give you nothing to do but swim, snorkel and watch the light change over the lagoon.

This is the long version, for couples with close to three weeks. It loops through Sri Lanka in a natural order: the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, the temple city of Kandy, the famous train ride into the hills, the cool tea country around Ella and the old Dutch fort at Galle on the south coast. That is four moves in twelve days, but every stretch is two to four nights and the drives are broken up with stops.

The finale is Laamu Atoll, far to the south of Malé. A domestic flight replaces the seaplane, which makes evening arrivals easier. The atoll is known for surf, turtles and a strong focus on protecting the reef.

Day by day

Days 1–4: Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle

Land at Bandaranaike International (CMB) near Colombo, usually via the Gulf, Istanbul or Singapore. Many flights arrive early in the morning; drive about four hours to Sigiriya with a driver, stopping for breakfast. Water Garden Sigiriya has villas with private pools facing the rock.

On day 2, climb Lion Rock at opening time, before the heat, past the frescoes and the lion's paws to the palace ruins on top. Rest in the afternoon. At dusk, take a jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla, where elephant herds gather at the reservoirs from about July to October and in smaller numbers at other times.

On day 3, cycle around the ruins of Polonnaruwa or visit the Dambulla cave temples, then try a village lunch with a bullock cart ride and canoe. The romantic moment is sunrise from Pidurangala Rock, a short scramble with a view straight across to Sigiriya as the mist lifts.

Days 4–6: Kandy

Drive about two and a half hours south to Kandy, stopping at the Dambulla caves if you skipped them, or at a spice garden in Matale. Stay in the hills above the lake, where the air is cooler and quieter than in town.

In the evening, attend the puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, when drummers play and worshippers bring flowers. Both of you should dress modestly and take off your shoes.

On day 5, walk the Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens with its orchid house and giant fig trees. In the afternoon, book an Ayurvedic spa treatment or watch a Kandyan dance performance. The romantic moment is a slow walk around Kandy Lake at dusk as the temple lights come on. Ask your hotel to reserve first-class or observation seats on tomorrow's train well in advance, since they sell out quickly.

Days 6–9: The Hill Country Train and Ella

Take the train from Kandy or nearby Peradeniya to Ella, about six to seven hours through tea plantations, waterfalls and misty ridges. It is one of the most beautiful train rides in Asia. Send your bags ahead by car with your driver.

98 Acres Resort & Spa sits on a tea estate with views of Little Adam's Peak and Ella Gap. On day 7, climb Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, an easy walk of about 45 minutes. Then watch a train cross the Nine Arches Bridge and tour a tea factory with a tasting.

On day 8, drive to Lipton's Seat at dawn for views over the tea country, then visit Ravana Falls on the way back. Book a couples Ayurvedic massage in the afternoon. The romantic moment is a quiet evening on your terrace with the valley below and a fire against the cool hill air.

Days 9–13: Galle

Drive about four and a half to five hours down to the south coast. Break the trip with an afternoon game drive in Udawalawe National Park, known for elephants. Amangalla, inside Galle Fort, is a grand old hotel in a 17th-century building with a pool and spa.

Galle is the slow stretch of the Sri Lanka half. Walk the fort's ramparts to the lighthouse at sunset, browse its galleries and cafés and eat dinner on a rooftop inside the walls. Take a home-style cooking class.

On day 11, visit Jungle Beach and the Peace Pagoda on the hill above Unawatuna. Watch the stilt fishermen at dawn near Koggala, then take a boat on Koggala Lake to its small islands. Leave a full day free for the beach. The romantic moment is the rampart walk at sunset, when families, couples and cricket players gather along the walls.

Days 13–20: Laamu Atoll, the Maldives

Drive about two and a half hours to CMB on the expressway and fly to Malé (MLE) in about 90 minutes. A domestic flight of under an hour takes you to Kadhdhoo (KDO), then a speedboat of 15 to 20 minutes to your resort.

Six Senses Laamu has overwater villas on a long jetty with ladders straight into the lagoon, as well as beach villas among the trees. It is known for its sustainability work and its own produce.

This is the slow stretch of the whole trip. Snorkel with the turtles that graze on the seagrass, take a sunset dolphin cruise and join a marine research outing with the resort's biologists. Surfers can ride the Yin Yang break from about March to October. Cycle a local island one morning. The romantic moment is a private dinner on the jetty with the stars overhead. On day 20, fly back to Malé for your connection home.

Getting Between Stops

In Sri Lanka, hire a private car and driver for the whole trip. Rates are modest, the driver handles narrow roads and traffic and you can stop whenever you like. Sigiriya to Kandy takes about two and a half hours. Kandy to Ella is best by train, about six to seven hours, with your driver meeting you at the other end. Ella to Galle takes about four and a half to five hours by road. Galle to the airport takes about two and a half hours on the expressway.

SriLankan Airlines and others fly from Colombo to Malé in about 90 minutes, with several flights a day. From Malé, Laamu is a domestic flight of under an hour to Kadhdhoo plus a short speedboat. Your resort books both. Unlike seaplanes, domestic flights operate after dark. To fly home from Malé, connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or Europe.

Where to Stay

Sigiriya: Water Garden Sigiriya has villas with private pools set around water gardens and views of Lion Rock.

Kandy: stay in the hills above the lake for cooler air and views. Small boutique hotels and tea-estate bungalows nearby suit two nights well.

Ella: 98 Acres Resort & Spa has chalets on a working tea estate facing Little Adam's Peak.

Galle: Amangalla, inside the fort, has high ceilings, wide verandas and a pool in the garden. Boutique villas in the fort and on the coast toward Unawatuna and Weligama are good alternatives.

Laamu Atoll: Six Senses Laamu is the main honeymoon choice, with overwater villas, a spa and dive and surf centers. Rahaa Resort is a lower-priced alternative in the same atoll.

When to Go

December to April is the best window for this route. Sri Lanka's west and south coasts, including Galle, are driest from about December to March. The Cultural Triangle and the hill country are also pleasant then, though the northeast monsoon can bring rain to Sigiriya in November and December.

The Maldives are driest from about December to April, with calm seas and clear water. From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas to Galle and more changeable weather in the Maldives, though rates fall and surf season peaks in Laamu.

January to March is the sweet spot. Avoid the Christmas and New Year weeks if you want lower prices. Book early if you plan to travel then.

Budget and Booking

Sri Lanka is good value. Expect roughly $300–900 a night for two at the best hotels on this route, with Amangalla at the top end. A private driver for the whole trip costs much less than in most countries. Six Senses Laamu runs about $1,200–2,500 a night for two in an overwater villa, more over the holidays. Domestic flights and speedboat transfers to Laamu are extra. All figures are approximate.

Book the Maldives first, then build Sri Lanka around it. Ask your driver or hotel to book the Kandy to Ella train in advance, since observation and first-class seats sell out weeks ahead.

Compare meal plans at Six Senses; for seven nights, half board or full board often saves money. Many hotels add a honeymoon dinner or spa credit with proof of your wedding date.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For 15 or 16 days, drop Kandy and drive from Sigiriya to Ella via the tea country, or skip Ella and take the train only part of the way. Cut Galle to three nights and the Maldives to five or six.

For a few more days, add two nights in Yala National Park between Ella and Galle for leopards, or two nights in Nuwara Eliya for colonial tea bungalows and cool weather.

Couples who want more beach in Sri Lanka can add three nights in Mirissa or Tangalle before the Maldives for whale watching from about December to April. Couples who want two Maldives experiences can split their nights between Laamu and a resort closer to Malé, though most prefer to stay put.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples for both of you and remove shoes and hats. Never pose with your back to a Buddha image.
  • Sri Lanka has dengue. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
  • Bring a warm layer for Ella and the train; the hill country is cool at night.
  • Swim only at beaches with calm water and watch for rip currents on the south coast.
  • On local Maldivian islands, dress modestly; alcohol is served only at resorts.
  • Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.
  • Read the State Department advisories for Sri Lanka and the Maldives before you travel.
FAQ

Planning this trip

Is 20 days too long for Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

Not if you want a slow pace. Twelve nights in Sri Lanka covers the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country and the south coast with time to rest at each stop. Seven nights in the Maldives gives a real break. Shorter trips cut Kandy or Ella and shorten the beach stay.

How do we get from Sri Lanka to Laamu Atoll?

Fly from Colombo to Malé in about 90 minutes, then take a domestic flight of under an hour to Kadhdhoo and a speedboat of 15 to 20 minutes to your resort. Domestic flights run after dark, so a later arrival from Colombo usually still connects the same day.

Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?

Yes. It is one of the most scenic train rides in Asia, through tea plantations, waterfalls and misty mountains. Book reserved seats well ahead, send your bags with your driver and bring snacks. If the timing doesn't work, your driver can take you by road in about four to five hours.

When is the best time for Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

December to April is best, with January to March the sweet spot. Galle and the south coast are dry, the hill country is pleasant and the Maldives are calm and sunny. From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings rain to the south coast and rougher seas.

How much does a Sri Lanka and Maldives honeymoon cost?

For 20 days, many couples spend roughly $15,000 to $30,000 for two including a private driver, trains, flights to Malé and Maldives transfers, before international airfare. These are approximate figures. Sri Lanka costs relatively little; the seven Maldives nights make up most of the budget.
