At a glanceThree nights near Sigiriya for the rock fortress and elephant safaris, two in Kandy, three in Ella's tea country after the famous hill country train, then five on the south coast around Mirissa and Weligama. A private driver handles every road transfer. It suits couples who want culture, wildlife and a beach on one island. Go from January to March.
Sri Lanka packs ancient cities, misty tea country, wild elephants and long beaches into an island about the size of West Virginia. This classic loop shows you all of it in two weeks with only four hotels.
You start in the dry zone near Sigiriya, a fifth-century palace built on a granite pillar. Three nights there give you time to climb it at opening, watch sunrise from neighboring Pidurangala and see elephants on safari.
Kandy comes next, Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set around a lake in forested hills. Two nights are enough for the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth and the botanic gardens at Peradeniya. Then you board the hill country railway for one of the most beautiful train rides in Asia, climbing through tea estates to Ella.
The last five nights are on the south coast, around Mirissa and Weligama. Blue whales feed offshore in season, the bays are curved and calm and Cape Weligama sits on a cliff above the ocean. It is the slow stretch of the trip and the right place to end.

Day by day
Days 1–3: Sigiriya
Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) via Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore. Your driver meets you for the drive to Sigiriya, about four hours. Cinnamon Air has offered light-aircraft flights of about 30 minutes, which can be worth it if you land tired. Rest by the pool.
On day 2, climb Lion Rock right at opening time, before the heat and the tour buses. Rest through the afternoon. Later, take a jeep safari among the elephant herds at Minneriya, which gather in their largest numbers around August and September but are seen in other months too.
On day 3, climb Pidurangala, the rock next door, for sunrise. Sitting on the boulders at the top as the light hits Sigiriya and the jungle below is the romantic moment of the dry zone. Later, visit the painted cave temples at Dambulla or cycle the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa. Cover shoulders and knees for both of you at temples.
Days 4–5: Kandy
Drive to Kandy on day 4, about two and a half to three hours, stopping at Dambulla if you skipped it. Check into a hotel in the hills above town, such as The Kandy House in Gunnepana, a restored manor with an infinity pool over paddy fields.
In the evening, attend the puja at the Temple of the Tooth, when drums and offerings fill the shrine that holds Sri Lanka's most sacred relic. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering. Afterward, walk the lake path at dusk. That quiet walk after the ceremony is the romantic moment of Kandy.
On day 5, visit the orchid house at the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens in the morning, then book an Ayurvedic treatment at a hillside retreat. If one of you wants more, walk through the old town bazaar. Early night: the train to Ella leaves in the morning.
Days 6–8: Ella
Take the hill country railway from Kandy toward Ella on day 6. The ride takes several hours through tea estates, waterfalls and cloud forest. Reserve seats as early as you can, since they sell out quickly. After cyclone damage in late 2025, service was restored in stages, so check the current timetable before booking. Your driver will carry your luggage by road and meet you in Ella.
On day 7, hike Little Adam's Peak for sunrise. Standing on the ridge as the tea slopes drop away to the plains in the first light is the romantic moment of Ella. Later, watch a blue train cross the Nine Arches Bridge and tour a tea factory to taste fresh leaf.
On day 8, swim below Ravana Falls after the rains or spend the day at your hotel. 98 Acres Resort and Spa has chalets among working tea bushes and big valley views. After rain, leeches appear on grassy trails, so wear socks and closed shoes.
Days 9–13: Mirissa and Weligama
Drive from Ella to the south coast on day 9, about four hours through Wellawaya. Check into your hotel around Mirissa or Weligama.
On day 10, take a dawn boat trip to look for blue whales. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance and limits boats around each whale. Rest in the afternoon. On day 11, snorkel with turtles in a sheltered bay or take a beginner surf lesson together in Weligama.
Day 12 is your splurge. Book a villa at Cape Weligama, which sits on a cliff above the ocean with a crescent-shaped pool. Climbing Coconut Tree Hill at golden hour, with palms leaning over the sea, is the romantic moment of the coast. End the evening with grilled seafood on the sand.
Keep day 13 completely free. Swim, nap, read and book a couples massage. Respect red flags on the main beach, where currents can be strong.
Day 14: Home from Colombo
Drive about three hours from the south coast to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) on the expressways around Colombo. Many long-haul departures leave late at night or in the early morning, so you may have most of the day on the beach.
If your flight leaves at night, ask your hotel for a late checkout or a day room. Plan to reach the airport at least three hours before departure, since traffic near Colombo can be slow.
There are no nonstop flights from Sri Lanka to the US. Most couples connect through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore. A stopover of a night in the Gulf can break up the trip home if you have time.
Buy tea in Ella or Kandy rather than waiting for the airport. Estate shops let you taste before you buy. Pack it in checked bags along with any spices from the coast.
Getting Between Stops
Hire a car with a driver for the whole loop. It is affordable and makes the winding roads easier. Drivers usually stay in lodging provided by your hotels and handle every transfer, so your luggage stays in the car.
The airport to Sigiriya takes about four hours. Sigiriya to Kandy takes about two and a half to three hours. Kandy to Ella is several hours by train, the highlight of the route, while your driver goes by road. Ella to Mirissa takes about four hours via Wellawaya. Mirissa to the airport takes about three hours on the expressways.
Locally, tuk-tuks are everywhere. Agree on the fare before setting off or use the PickMe and Uber apps where they work. Scooters are available on the coast, but traffic on the main road is fast and heavy with buses, so most couples skip them.
Where to Stay
Near Sigiriya, Water Garden Sigiriya has spacious villas with private plunge pools, several facing the rock. Jetwing Vil Uyana built its dwellings on stilts and in reed beds around a wetland. Heritance Kandalama, near Dambulla, is Geoffrey Bawa's long building hidden in the jungle above a reservoir.
In Kandy, The Kandy House is a restored manor with a small number of rooms. Amaya Hills sits high on a ridge. Santani Wellness Resort and Spa, about an hour or so from Kandy, suits couples who want a few days of rest.
In Ella, 98 Acres Resort and Spa is the best known, with chalets among tea bushes. On the south coast, Cape Weligama sits on a cliff above the ocean. Sri Sharavi Beach Villas and Spa is a boutique option on the sand in Mirissa.

When to Go
January to March is the best window for the whole loop. Sigiriya is dry, Ella has clear mornings and cool nights and the south coast is calm, with daily whale trips. February is often the sweet spot. December is good on the coast, but Ella and Sigiriya can be very rainy then.
April brings intense heat in the dry zone. Ella's weather turns changeable through June.
From about May to September, the southwest monsoon makes the south coast rough, with red flags on the beaches and few whale trips. Sigiriya and Ella stay drier in those months. If your honeymoon falls in summer, swap Mirissa for the east coast around Trincomalee. The Esala Perahera festival fills Kandy in July or August, with hotels booked months ahead.
Budget and Booking
Plan on roughly $200–700 a night for two across good boutique hotels and resorts. Sigiriya's design-led resorts and Cape Weligama sit at the top. Guesthouses in Ella and Mirissa can cost far less. A car and driver for two weeks is a significant but sensible line in the budget. All figures are approximate.
Book the train seats as soon as they open. Then book peak-season villas near Sigiriya and on the coast.
Other costs include entry to Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, a jeep safari, the Temple of the Tooth, a whale-watching trip, tea factory tours and Ayurvedic treatments. Rice and curry at a family guesthouse is often the best meal of the day and very good value.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For ten days, cut Kandy to one night and Mirissa to three. Or skip Kandy and drive from Sigiriya to Ella via the hills.
With more time, add two or three nights at Yala National Park between Ella and the coast for leopards and elephants. It is on the way and breaks up the drive.
Or add two nights in Galle at the end. Walk the 17th-century ramparts at sunset and browse the shops of Pedlar Street, then drive about two and a half hours to the airport. Couples who want an overwater finale can fly from Colombo to the Maldives in about an hour and a half and spend four nights in a lagoon villa before flying home.
Honeymoon Tips
At temples, both of you need covered shoulders and knees. Remove shoes and hats. Do not pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue.
Climb Sigiriya and Pidurangala early, carry water and wear shoes with grip. The steps on Lion Rock are steep and exposed.
On whale trips, choose an operator that respects the animals and carries life jackets. Seas can be choppy, so take seasickness medication if you need it.
Respect red flags on south coast beaches. Dengue is present in Sri Lanka, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Sri Lanka before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.
FAQPlanning this trip
Is two weeks enough for a Sri Lanka honeymoon?
Yes. Fourteen days lets you see the ancient cities, Kandy, the tea country and the south coast without rushing. With a private driver and only four hotels, the pace stays relaxed. If you have only ten days, trim Kandy and the beach rather than adding more stops.
Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?
Yes. It is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia, climbing through tea estates, forests and waterfalls. Reserve seats as early as possible, since they sell out quickly. Check the current timetable, as the line was damaged by a cyclone in late 2025 and reopened in stages.
Do we need a driver in Sri Lanka?
We strongly recommend one. Roads are winding and traffic is heavy, while a driver for the full trip is affordable. Your driver also carries your luggage while you take the train, which makes the Kandy to Ella day easy. Most travel agents and many hotels can arrange one.
When can we see blue whales off Mirissa?
The season runs roughly from December to April, when seas are calm and trips run daily. January to March gives the best mix of weather and sightings. From May, the southwest monsoon makes the sea rough and trips usually stop or move farther offshore.
Can we add the Maldives to this route?
Yes. Flights from Colombo to the Maldives take about an hour and a half. Add four or five nights after Mirissa, or replace the beach stretch with the Maldives entirely. Check that your international arrival leaves time for a daylight seaplane transfer if your resort uses one.
