At a glance

A long two-part honeymoon across the Pacific: four nights in Sydney, four in the Whitsunday Islands for Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef, then a four-hour flight to Fiji and five nights on Taveuni or a private island in Northern Fiji. It suits couples who want a big city, reef time and a remote finish. Go from May to October, ideally September or October.

Australia and Fiji are an easy pair. Brisbane and Sydney both have nonstop flights to Nadi of about four hours. Fiji Airways also flies from Nadi straight back to Los Angeles and San Francisco, so you avoid retracing your steps on the way home.

This route has three bases. Sydney gives you four nights to beat jet lag with harbor ferries, coastal walks and a night at the Opera House. The Whitsunday Islands follow for the reef: a seaplane over Heart Reef, a walk to the Hill Inlet lookout and long days on the water from an island resort.

Then you leave the crowds behind. Northern Fiji, the islands of Taveuni, Vanua Levu and their small neighbors, sees a fraction of the visitors who stay near Nadi. Five nights there are for waterfalls, soft coral dives and doing nothing on a quiet beach. Expect a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon with one city, two reefs and a lot of water in between.

Day by day

Days 1–6: Sydney

Fly overnight from the West Coast to Sydney Airport (SYD), losing a day as you cross the date line. You land on day 2. The city is 20 to 30 minutes away by car or train. Stay on the harbor: Park Hyatt Sydney sits at the water's edge in The Rocks, facing the Opera House.

Spend day 3 on the water. Ride the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly and walk part of the Manly Scenic Walkway. On day 4, follow the coastal path from Bondi to Coogee and swim at one of the ocean pools on the way. Keep evenings simple: dinner in Potts Point or Surry Hills and a drink with a view of the bridge.

Use day 5 for the Blue Mountains, about two hours west, or a slower harbor day. The romantic moment is a twilight BridgeClimb as the city lights come on, or a night at the Opera House followed by a walk home along the quay.

Days 6–10: The Whitsunday Islands

Fly from Sydney to Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) in about two and a half hours. Stay on Hamilton Island at qualia, with pavilions on the island's northern tip, or Beach Club Hamilton Island for something simpler. InterContinental Hayman Island Resort is a boat ride north and quieter still.

The splurge is a seaplane or helicopter flight over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach, landing on the sand for a picnic. On another day, take a boat to Hill Inlet and walk to the lookout at low tide, when the white silica sand and turquoise channels swirl below you. Then swim at Whitehaven itself.

Give one day to the outer reef. Boats run to pontoons at Hardy Reef for snorkeling over coral and reef fish. Leave the last day free. The romantic moment is sunset from One Tree Hill on Hamilton Island, where people bring a drink and watch the light drop over the Coral Sea.

Days 10–11: Overnight in Nadi

Fly from Hamilton Island back to Sydney or on to Brisbane and connect to Nadi International (NAN). Flights from Brisbane and Sydney to Nadi take about four hours. With the time change, you will usually land in the late afternoon or evening.

Spend the night in Nadi or on Denarau Island, where the big resorts are a 20-minute drive from the airport. It is a practical stop rather than a destination, so pick somewhere comfortable with an early breakfast. If your international flight lands early enough, you may be able to connect to Taveuni the same day, but schedules on small planes change with the weather, so a buffer night is wise.

Use the evening for a quiet dinner and a first taste of kokoda, Fiji's lime-cured fish in coconut milk. Repack into soft bags if you are flying to Laucala or Taveuni, since domestic flights have tight luggage limits.

Days 11–16: Northern Fiji

Take the domestic flight from Nadi to Taveuni's Matei Airport, about an hour and a half, or to Savusavu on Vanua Levu. Laucala Island guests fly by private charter to the island's own airstrip in under an hour.

For the full splurge, COMO Laucala Island has 25 residences with private pools and includes meals, drinks, golf, riding and diving. Boutique resorts on neighboring Qamea and Matangi are smaller and more affordable, with kid-free bures over the water or in the trees.

This is the slow stretch. Snorkel or dive the Somosomo Strait, where the Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall are known for soft corals. Hike to Tavoro Falls in Bouma National Heritage Park and swim beneath them. Stand with a foot each side of the 180th meridian at Waiyevo. The romantic moment is a private dinner on the beach at dusk. On day 16, fly to Nadi and take the nonstop home to Los Angeles or San Francisco, arriving the same calendar day.

Getting Between Stops

There are four flights after you land in Australia, so book them together. Sydney to Hamilton Island takes about two and a half hours on Qantas, Virgin Australia or Jetstar. Alternatively, fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) near Airlie Beach, about 35 minutes from the marina.

From Hamilton Island, connect through Sydney or Brisbane for Nadi. Fiji Airways and Australian carriers fly both routes in about four hours.

In Fiji, Fiji Link flies from Nadi to Taveuni and Savusavu in about an hour or more. Weather can delay small planes, which is why this route builds in a night in Nadi. Luggage limits on domestic flights are tight, so leave a bag at your Nadi hotel if you are coming back that way. Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Nadi to Los Angeles and San Francisco in about ten to eleven hours.

Where to Stay

Sydney: Park Hyatt Sydney has the best harbor position in the city, beside the bridge and facing the Opera House. Hotels in The Rocks and Circular Quay keep you close to the ferries.

Whitsunday Islands: qualia on Hamilton Island is the most romantic choice, with private pavilions, its own beach and plunge pools in the top rooms. Beach Club Hamilton Island is kid-free and right on Catseye Beach. InterContinental Hayman Island Resort is more secluded and reached by boat.

Northern Fiji: COMO Laucala Island is one of the most exclusive resorts in the Pacific, with long minimum stays and all-inclusive rates. The kid-free boutique resorts on Qamea and Matangi cost far less and still feel remote. Small lodges on Taveuni suit divers and hikers who want to explore.

When to Go

May to October is the dry, cooler season across the whole route. Sydney is mild, with crisp mornings in winter and warm days by September. In the Whitsundays, May to October is the most comfortable time, with fewer marine stingers. From about November to May, wear a stinger suit when swimming in the ocean; resorts supply them.

Fiji is driest from May to October, with lower humidity and calmer seas for diving. November to April is hot and wet. It is also cyclone season, when some flights and boat transfers can be cancelled.

September and October are the sweet spot. Sydney is warming up, the reef is clear and Fiji is still in its dry season. Avoid the Australian school holidays in late September and early October if you can, since the Whitsundays get busier.

Budget and Booking

Expect roughly $500–1,200 a night for two at good harbor hotels in Sydney and $590–1,500 in the Whitsundays, with qualia at the top end. Northern Fiji boutique island resorts run about $800–1,500 a night for two, often with meals included, while Laucala costs several thousand dollars a night. These figures are approximate.

The seaplane or helicopter trip to Whitehaven and Heart Reef is a significant extra, as are outer reef days, so add them to your budget early. Domestic flights in Fiji and charter transfers to private islands also add up.

Book Laucala and the small Qamea resorts six to twelve months ahead, since they have very few rooms. Mention your honeymoon when booking. Australian and Fijian resorts often add a dinner or a bottle of wine for newlyweds.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For 12 or 13 days, drop to three nights each in Sydney and the Whitsundays and keep the Fiji stay at five. Or skip Northern Fiji and stay in the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands, a boat or seaplane ride from Nadi, which removes the overnight in Nadi.

With 18 to 21 days, add two nights at Uluru between Sydney and the Whitsundays for the red center, or three in Port Douglas for the Daintree Rainforest and the outer reef from a different base.

Couples who want more Fiji can split the island time between Taveuni and Savusavu on Vanua Levu, a short flight apart. The pace stays slow and you see two different sides of the north.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Australia and Fiji both drive on the left. Most couples skip the rental car entirely.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard; the sun is very strong in both countries.
  • In Fiji, dress modestly in villages, with shoulders and knees covered for both of you. Bring a sulu, or sarong, to wrap over shorts.
  • If you are invited to a kava ceremony, accept the bowl, clap once, drink it in one go and clap three times.
  • Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur in Fiji. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
  • Read the State Department advisories for Australia and Fiji before you go.
FAQ

Planning this trip

How do we combine Australia and Fiji on a honeymoon?

Fly into Sydney, spend time in Australia, then take a four-hour flight from Sydney or Brisbane to Nadi. Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Nadi to Los Angeles and San Francisco, so you can fly home directly. This open-jaw plan avoids backtracking and makes Fiji the relaxing end of the trip.

Is Northern Fiji worth the extra flight?

For couples who want quiet, yes. Taveuni and its neighbors see far fewer visitors than the islands near Nadi, with rainforest waterfalls, soft coral reefs and very small resorts. The cost is an extra domestic flight and often a night in Nadi. For an easier option, the Mamanuca Islands are a short boat ride away.

Which island should we stay on in the Whitsundays?

Hamilton Island is the easiest, with its own airport and the widest choice from qualia to the kid-free Beach Club. Hayman Island is more secluded and a boat ride away. Both are good bases for Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and outer reef trips.

When is the best time for an Australia and Fiji honeymoon?

May to October is dry in Fiji and comfortable in the Whitsundays, with fewer marine stingers. September and October are the best overall, with warmer Sydney days. From November to April, Fiji is hot and wet with a risk of cyclones and stinger suits are needed on the reef.

How much does this trip cost?

For two weeks at good hotels, many couples spend roughly $15,000 to $30,000 for two including domestic flights, reef trips and transfers, before international airfare. These are approximate figures. Choosing Laucala in Fiji can push the total well beyond that, while Taveuni lodges keep it lower.
