Why Honeymoon on Denarau Island
Denarau makes sense when logistics matter. After a long overnight flight from the US, a short transfer to a resort with a pool, spa and good restaurants is welcome. The same goes for the end of the trip.
It is also handy for couples who want variety without moving hotels. From Port Denarau, boats leave daily for snorkeling, beach clubs and island lunches in the Mamanucas. You can be on white sand by mid-morning and back for dinner.
Resort amenities are another draw. Large pools, spas, golf and multiple restaurants offer plenty to do. For couples who prefer reliable comfort over remote island life, Denarau delivers that well.
When to Go
The Nadi side of Viti Levu is drier and sunnier than the south and east, which helps year-round. The best months are May to October, the dry season, with warm sunny days and lower humidity. July and August are peak season, especially with Australian and New Zealand school holidays, so book early.
November to April is the wet season, bringing heat, humidity and heavy showers. Cyclone risk is highest from about January to March. Rates can drop and the resorts stay open, but day cruises may be canceled in rough weather.
Shoulder months like April, May and October often balance weather and value well.
Where to Stay
Denarau's resorts line the beach along the island's western edge. The Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa and the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort sit side by side. Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa offers villas and suites spread along the shore. Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa and Radisson Blu are also popular with couples.
Some resorts set aside kid-free pools or areas, which helps on a honeymoon. Ask when you book.
As a rough guide, expect about US$200–450 a night at the major resorts, with suites and villas costing more. Package deals often bundle meals or spa credits.
Romantic Things to Do
Take a day cruise from Port Denarau to the Mamanuca Islands for snorkeling, swimming and lunch on a white-sand island.
Spend an afternoon at Cloud 9, a floating bar and pizzeria anchored on a reef in the Mamanucas, reached by boat from the marina.
Play a round at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club, which has an 18-hole course.
Visit the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs north of Nadi, then the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden in the hills.
In Nadi, see the colorful Sri Siva Subramaniya temple, a Hindu temple with striking architecture. Visitors should dress modestly.
Getting There and Around
Fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN). Fiji Airways flies nonstop from several US gateways, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, in roughly 10 to 11 hours. Denarau is about 20 minutes away by road.
On the island, a hop-on shuttle bus links the resorts with Port Denarau. Taxis are easy to find for trips into Nadi town.
Port Denarau Marina is the main hub for boats to the outer islands. South Sea Cruises and other operators run transfers and day trips. Seaplanes and helicopters fly from nearby for faster connections.
For the Coral Coast or Pacific Harbour, arrange a transfer or rental car.
Food and Drink
Port Denarau has a cluster of restaurants and bars around the marina, from seafood and Italian to Indian and Japanese. It is a lively spot for sunset drinks and a meal outside your resort.
The resorts offer several restaurants each, with themed nights such as lovo feasts and Fijian or Indo-Fijian buffets.
Nadi town, a short taxi ride away, has local curry houses and a busy market. Try kokoda, a raw fish dish marinated in citrus and coconut cream. Indo-Fijian curries with roti are everywhere too.
Fiji Bula and Fiji Gold are the local beers. Resorts usually serve imported wines and tropical cocktails.
Honeymoon Tips
Use Denarau for one to three nights, not your whole honeymoon. The outer islands offer the classic Fiji beaches that Denarau lacks.
Book day cruises for early in your stay. If weather cancels a trip, you will still have time to rebook.
The sun is strong, even on cloudy days. Use reef-safe sunscreen and wear a rash guard while snorkeling.
Mosquitoes are present and dengue occurs in Fiji. Use repellent, especially at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
Keep valuables in your room safe and use registered taxis in Nadi, especially at night.
