The short answer

St Brelade's Bay is Jersey's easiest honeymoon base: a sheltered, south-facing crescent of sand with beachfront hotels, calm swimming and the airport just ten minutes away. June and September bring long days and easier dinner bookings than the July and August school holidays. L'Horizon Beach Hotel and Spa sits right on the sand; book a sea-view room. The sea stays cool, peaking in the low 60s°F. Don't miss sunset at La Corbière lighthouse as the tide floods the causeway behind you.

Best for
  • Couples who want a walkable beach base
  • Coastal walks and cycling together
  • A short hop from London
Maybe skip it if
  • You want warm, tropical swimming water
  • Nightlife matters more than quiet evenings

St Brelade's Bay is a wide arc of pale sand on the southwest corner of Jersey, sheltered from the prevailing winds and facing south into the sun. Granite headlands frame each end, pine-covered slopes rise behind and a promenade of hotels, cafés and gardens runs along the back. On a warm June evening it looks closer to the Atlantic coast of France than to anywhere in Britain, which makes sense given that Normandy is just over the horizon.

It is the natural honeymoon base on the island. The beach is safe for swimming, several of Jersey's best hotels sit right on the sand and the airport is ten minutes away. The rugged west coast, the lighthouse at La Corbière and the harbor village of St Aubin are all close enough to reach by bike or bus.

At the western end stands a small Norman church and the Fishermen's Chapel, whose medieval wall paintings survived the Reformation. Few beaches anywhere put an 800-year-old chapel this close to the waterline.

Why Honeymoon in St Brelade's Bay

Convenience and beauty rarely line up this well. You can step out of a beachfront hotel straight onto clean sand, swim before breakfast and be on a wild cliff path within twenty minutes.

The bay is also a good mix of lively and quiet. In summer the central stretch has beach cafés, paddleboard rentals and families. Walk a few minutes to either end, or over the headland into Ouaisné. The crowd thins quickly.

The surrounding coves are the real treat. Beauport, just west, is a small horseshoe of sand with no buildings at all, reached by a steep footpath. Portelet, to the east, sits below the cliffs with a tiny tidal islet topped by a Martello tower. Having three or four different beaches within a short walk means every day can feel slightly different.

When to Go

June to September is the best time. The bay faces south and holds the sun well, so summer days can feel noticeably warmer here than on Jersey's exposed west coast. Average highs reach the upper 60s and low 70s°F. The sea warms to the low 60s°F by late August and September.

July and August are busy with British families on school holidays. Hotels charge peak rates. June and September give you long days and easier dinner bookings.

May is pleasant for walking but too cool for most people to swim. From November to March the bay is quiet and often stormy, which has its own appeal if you plan to spend most of the day in a spa. Check the tide tables whatever the month; at high tide parts of the beach narrow considerably.

Where to Stay

The bay is lined with hotels. The best rooms face the water.

L'Horizon Beach Hotel and Spa sits directly on the sand in the middle of the bay, with sea-view rooms, a spa and terraces that catch the evening light. It is the most obvious honeymoon pick.

The St Brelade's Bay Hotel, a long-established hotel, has gardens facing the beach and an outdoor pool.

Up the hill at La Moye, the Atlantic Hotel overlooks St Ouen's Bay and a golf course, with a quieter country house feel and a strong restaurant reputation.

For more independence, look at self-catering apartments and cottages in the lanes behind the bay or in St Aubin, a short ride east.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Visit St Brelade's Church and the Fishermen's Chapel at the west end of the beach. The chapel's faded medieval frescoes are worth a quiet ten minutes.
  • Take the footpath to Beauport for a swim in clear water below steep cliffs.
  • Walk or cycle the Railway Walk, a traffic-free path on the line of an old railway between St Aubin and La Corbière.
  • Cross to La Corbière lighthouse at low tide, then watch the sunset from the headland as the causeway floods behind you. Check the tide times first.
  • Hire paddleboards or kayaks and explore the headlands from the water.
  • Spend an afternoon in St Aubin, a pretty harbor village of old merchants' houses and waterside restaurants.
  • Walk out to Noirmont Point, a headland with wartime gun emplacements and long views across St Aubin's Bay.

Getting There and Around

Fly from the US to London and connect to Jersey, a flight of about an hour. Jersey Airport is in the parish of St Peter, about ten minutes from the bay by taxi. Ferries from England and France arrive in St Helier, roughly 20 minutes away by car.

LibertyBus routes connect the bay with St Helier, St Aubin and the airport, which makes a car-free stay realistic. A rental car helps for the north coast and the east of the island, but you can keep it for just a day or two.

Walking is the best way to explore the immediate area. Coastal paths link the bay with Ouaisné, Portelet and Beauport, while the Railway Walk runs inland to St Aubin and La Corbière. E-bikes cope well with the hills and are easy to rent.

Food and Drink

Seafood dominates. Look for Jersey oysters from the east coast beds at Grouville, crab sandwiches at beach kiosks and lobster served simply with butter. In late spring, Jersey Royal new potatoes appear on almost every menu, usually with butter and a sprinkle of salt. They deserve the fuss.

The bay itself has a range from beach cafés to hotel dining rooms with sea views. For a change of scene, St Aubin's harbor has several restaurants and pubs. The Atlantic Hotel's restaurant is a destination for a special night.

Try Jersey ice cream made with the island's rich milk. Pick up a jar of black butter, the traditional spiced apple preserve. Local cider and gin are worth sampling with a sunset view.

Honeymoon Tips

Book a sea-view room. On a bay like this, the view is most of what you are paying for.

Check tide times every day. They shape swimming, the Corbière causeway and how much beach is available.

Pack layers even in summer. Evenings cool off fast once the sun drops behind the headland.

Reserve dinner ahead from June to September, especially at weekends.

If you plan a low-tide walk on the east coast, book a guide and match the date to a big spring tide.

Finally, take one rainy-day plan in reserve. The Jersey War Tunnels and Durrell Wildlife Park are both within a half-hour drive.

FAQ

St Brelade's Bay honeymoon FAQ

Is St Brelade's Bay the best place to stay in Jersey?

For most honeymooners, yes. It has the island's most attractive sheltered beach, several hotels right on the sand and quick access to the airport, the west coast and St Aubin. Couples who prefer a village harbor might choose Gorey or St Aubin instead, while those who want a country house stay may prefer an inland hotel.

Is the beach good for swimming?

Yes. The bay is sheltered and slopes gently, which makes it one of Jersey's safest swimming beaches in summer. The water is cool, around the low 60s°F at its warmest in late summer. At low tide you may need to walk a fair way to reach swimming depth.

How far is St Brelade's Bay from the airport?

About ten minutes by car or taxi. Jersey Airport is just inland in the parish of St Peter. Buses also link the airport with the bay. That short transfer is a big advantage after a long journey from the US. It means you can reach the beach within hours of landing in Jersey.

Can we walk to La Corbière lighthouse?

You can reach the headland by road or along the Railway Walk. The lighthouse itself stands on a rock linked by a causeway that is covered at high tide. You can cross only around low water. A siren and signs warn of the rising tide, so check the times posted nearby and leave plenty of margin.

Do we need a car at St Brelade's Bay?

Not necessarily. The bay is walkable and buses connect it with St Helier, St Aubin and the airport. E-bikes are easy to rent. A car for a day or two makes it easier to see the north coast cliffs and the east coast castles. Roads are narrow and slow, so rent the smallest car you can.
