The short answer

Brittany is a coastal honeymoon for couples who love seafood, walking and dramatic scenery more than sunbathing. Go between June and September, choose one or two areas such as Saint-Malo and Cancale or Belle-Île and plan five to seven nights with a car. It is good value for France. The water is cold and the weather moody, so it suits relaxed, flexible travelers.

Best for
  • Couples who love oysters and seafood
  • Hiking coastal paths together
  • A good-value French coastal trip
Maybe skip it if
  • You want warm water and reliable sun
  • You prefer polished luxury resorts

Brittany is the honeymoon for couples who would choose a windswept clifftop walk and a plate of oysters over a sunlounger. This peninsula on France's far northwest holds a large share of the country's coastline, with walled ports, islands, wild headlands and sandy coves that look Caribbean on a sunny day, though the water stays chilly.

Come between June and September. July and August are the warmest and liveliest, while June and September bring long, softer days with fewer French families on holiday. Weather changes fast, so build in flexibility.

Brittany is large, so pick one or two areas. The north coast around Saint-Malo, Dinard and Cancale is easiest from Paris. The Côte de Granit Rose has the famous pink rocks. In the south, the Gulf of Morbihan and Belle-Île feel sunnier and more relaxed. Five to seven nights with a car lets you settle in without rushing.

Why Honeymoon in Brittany

Brittany feels distinct from the rest of France. It has its own Celtic language, music and festivals, plus a strong seafaring identity that shows in every harbor.

The scenery changes every few miles. Saint-Malo is a granite walled city on the sea, rebuilt after heavy damage in World War II. Along the Côte de Granit Rose, boulders of pink stone pile up around lighthouses and coves. In the south, Carnac has thousands of standing stones set in long rows by prehistoric people.

For couples, the appeal is the mix of active days and cozy evenings. Hike a stretch of the coastal path, swim at a sheltered beach, then end the day over buckwheat galettes and a bowl of cider.

When to Go

July and August are high season, with the warmest weather, festivals and full beaches. The water peaks around the low to mid 60s Fahrenheit, refreshing at best. Book island hotels and ferries early.

June and September are lovely: long daylight in June, warmer sea in September and much more space everywhere. Many couples find them the best months.

Spring and fall are good for walking, with dramatic skies and empty paths, though rain is frequent. In winter, storms make the coast wild to watch, but many hotels on the islands and small resorts close. Pack layers and a proper rain jacket whatever the month.

Where to Stay

On the north coast, Saint-Malo puts you inside the walls with restaurants on your doorstep. Dinard, across the estuary, has Belle Époque villas and a calmer seafront.

In Cancale, the Maisons de Bricourt, run by the family of chef Olivier Roellinger, include seaside rooms overlooking the oyster beds. It is a fine pick for a food-focused splurge.

On the Côte de Granit Rose, Perros-Guirec and Trégastel have family-run hotels near the pink rocks.

In the south, consider a few nights on Belle-Île-en-Mer, reached by ferry from Quiberon, or around the Gulf of Morbihan near Vannes. Boutique guesthouses in old stone farmhouses are common across the region.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk the ramparts of Saint-Malo at high tide, when waves crash against the walls. At low tide you can walk out to the tidal island of Grand Bé, but watch the posted times closely or you may be cut off.

Follow the Sentier des Douaniers, the old customs officers' path, at Ploumanac'h through pink granite formations to the lighthouse.

Take the ferry to Belle-Île and rent bikes or e-bikes to reach the Aiguilles de Port-Coton, rocks Monet painted, plus small swimming coves.

Cruise the Gulf of Morbihan by boat among its dozens of small islands, stopping at Île-aux-Moines for a stroll. On the far west tip, stand at the Pointe du Raz for an Atlantic sunset.

Getting There and Around

Fly nonstop to Paris CDG, then take the TGV from Paris Montparnasse. Rennes is about 1.5 hours away and Saint-Malo about 2.5 hours. Trains also run to Vannes, Quimper and Brest. Rennes airport (RNS) mainly has domestic and short European flights.

Rent a car for the coast. Distances are larger than they look: Saint-Malo to Quiberon is around three hours. Major roads in Brittany are toll-free, which keeps costs down.

Ferries reach Belle-Île from Quiberon in under an hour, with more departures in summer. Book car spaces well ahead in July and August, or leave the car on the mainland and rent bikes on the island.

Food and Drink

Brittany's comfort food is the galette, a savory buckwheat crêpe filled with ham, egg and cheese or with seafood. Sweet wheat crêpes follow for dessert, often with salted butter caramel. Drink cider from a ceramic bowl.

Seafood is the other reason to come. Cancale oysters are eaten straight from stalls by the harbor, with the shells tossed onto the shore. Look also for mussels, langoustines and lobster.

Try kouign-amann, a buttery caramelized pastry from Douarnenez. Far breton is a custard cake with prunes. Salt from the marshes of Guérande, on the southern edge of the region, seasons everything. Breton butter is almost always salted.

Honeymoon Tips

Tides are huge on the north coast. Check the tide tables daily, both for walking to tidal islands and for knowing when a beach will be swallowed by the sea.

Swim at guarded beaches in summer and be careful of currents near headlands and river mouths. The water is cold enough that a short swim is plenty for most people.

Pack properly: a waterproof jacket, a warm layer and good walking shoes for the coastal path, which can be muddy and uneven.

Brittany is casual. Smart jeans and a sweater work almost everywhere for dinner. Reserve dinner in Saint-Malo and on the islands in summer, since good tables go fast.

FAQ

Brittany honeymoon FAQ

Is Brittany good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for active couples who love seafood, coastal walks and a relaxed pace. Beaches are beautiful but the Atlantic is cold and the weather changeable. If you want guaranteed sun and warm swimming, the Riviera or Corsica suit you better. Brittany works best from June to September with a car.

Which part of Brittany is best for couples?

For a short trip, the north coast around Saint-Malo, Dinard and Cancale is easiest from Paris and full of character. For more seclusion, Belle-Île or the Gulf of Morbihan in the south feel calmer and often sunnier. The Côte de Granit Rose is the most unusual scenery.

Can we combine Brittany with Mont-Saint-Michel?

Easily. Mont-Saint-Michel sits on the border with Normandy, about 45 minutes from Saint-Malo by car. Many couples spend a night on the mount, then continue to Saint-Malo and Cancale. You can see the mount across the bay from Cancale on a clear day.

What does a trip to Brittany cost?

Approximate figures: comfortable hotels and guesthouses run about €110 to €250 a night, more on the islands in August. A crêperie dinner for two costs roughly €40 to €60 with cider. An oyster tasting at Cancale is very cheap. It is one of France's better-value coastal regions.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in Brittany?

In summer, yes for short swims, but it stays cool, typically in the low to mid 60s Fahrenheit. Southern beaches and sheltered coves warm slightly more. Swim at guarded beaches and stay alert for strong currents near rocky points. Some hotels have heated pools if you prefer warmer water.
