The short answer

Texel is a calm coastal add-on rather than a stand-alone honeymoon: two or three nights after Amsterdam, about two hours away by train and ferry. Go June through September for long evenings and open beach pavilions. It suits couples who like cycling, seals, birdwatching and good fish more than tropical heat. A summer double runs roughly €120 to €250 a night (approximate). The North Sea stays cool, so pack windproof layers. Don't miss sunset on the western beach with a drink from a dune-backed pavilion.

Best for
  • Couples who love cycling and nature
  • Amsterdam trips needing a quiet break
  • Couples happy with cool, breezy beaches
Maybe skip it if
  • You want warm water and tropical sun
  • You're traveling between November and March

Texel is the largest and most varied of the Wadden Islands, a chain of low, sandy islands strung along the northern coast of the Netherlands. It is only a short ferry ride from the mainland, yet it feels like a world apart: a long western shore of pale beach backed by dunes, a patchwork of sheep pastures and farm fields inland and a calm eastern side facing the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea.

This is a quiet, outdoorsy honeymoon stop rather than a destination on its own for most Americans. Days are spent cycling between seven small villages, walking the beach, watching seals and birds and eating very good fish. Evenings are slow, with dinner and an early night or a walk to see the sun set into the sea.

Texel works best as a two- or three-night break from city sightseeing in Amsterdam, especially between June and September. Bring layers and windproof jackets, since the sea breeze rarely stops.

Why Honeymoon on Texel

After a few days of museums and crowded canals, Texel offers space. Its beaches stretch for about 20 miles with no high-rise hotels. Much of the western coast is protected as a national park of dunes, heath and wetland.

It is a place for simple pleasures. You can cycle a loop of the island in a day, stopping for coffee in a village, a swim, a smoked fish sandwich at a harbor stall and a beer at a beach pavilion. The island is famous among birdwatchers and has a seal sanctuary and a museum of shipwreck finds.

For American couples, it shows a side of the Netherlands few visitors see: rural, coastal and calm. The Wadden Sea around it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, valued for its tidal flats and wildlife.

When to Go

June through September is the best window, with the warmest weather, long light evenings and all beach pavilions and boat trips running. July and August are busy with Dutch and German families, so book rooms early and expect crowds in De Koog.

May and early June are lovely and calmer, with lambs in the fields and wildflowers in the dunes. Some spring days are still cool for swimming. September often brings mild weather and quieter beaches.

In April, parts of the island have colorful bulb fields. October can bring dramatic storms and bird migration, appealing to some couples.

November through March is cold, windy and quiet. Many restaurants and some hotels close or cut hours, though stormy beach walks and cozy inns have their own winter appeal.

Where to Stay

Den Burg, in the center, is the island's main town, with the most shops and restaurants and easy bike access to everything.

Den Hoorn, in the south, is a pretty village of old houses and a white church, close to dunes and the ferry. It suits couples who want quiet. Bij Jef, a well-known restaurant with a few rooms here, is a popular choice for a special night.

De Koog, on the west coast, is closest to the beach and has the most nightlife, though it can feel busy in summer. Hotels set in the dunes nearby, such as Grand Hotel Opduin, offer quick beach access.

Oudeschild is the fishing harbor on the eastern shore, home to seafood stalls and seal boat trips. De Cocksdorp in the far north sits near the lighthouse and the island's wildest beaches.

Holiday cottages and small B&Bs are common across the island. A comfortable double in summer often costs roughly €120 to €250 a night (approximate).

Romantic Things to Do

  • Watch the sunset from the western beach, ideally with drinks from a beach pavilion.
  • Take a boat from Oudeschild to see seals resting on sandbanks in the Wadden Sea.
  • Rent bikes and follow the signed routes through dunes, forest and villages.
  • Visit Ecomare, the island's seal and bird center, to see rescued seals and learn about the Wadden Sea.
  • Climb the lighthouse at De Cocksdorp for views over the sea and neighboring Vlieland.
  • Walk the trails around De Slufter, a tidal inlet where the sea floods through a gap in the dunes into salt marsh.
  • For thrill-seekers, try a tandem skydive over the island.

Getting There and Around

From Amsterdam or Schiphol, take a train to Den Helder, about 1.5 hours with a change in some cases. A bus or short walk links the station to the ferry terminal. TESO ferries cross to 't Horntje on Texel in under half an hour, sailing about hourly from early morning to evening. You do not need to book as a foot or bike passenger.

Cars can go on the ferry, but you do not need one. Bikes are the island's main transport. Rental shops near the ferry and in each village offer regular and electric bikes. Distances are short and paths are flat, though headwinds can make some rides harder than they look.

A local bus network connects the villages with the ferry. Taxis are available for luggage transfers or rainy days.

Food and Drink

Seafood is the star. Try freshly smoked fish, North Sea shrimp and mussels from harbor stalls in Oudeschild, or a proper fish dinner in a village restaurant.

Texel lamb is a local specialty. The island's sheep graze on salty pastures. Lamb appears on most menus as well as in local butchers and farm shops. Texel cheese, made from sheep and cow milk, is a good souvenir.

Texelse Bierbrouwerij makes the island's beers, the best known being Skuumkoppe, a dark wheat beer. Juttertje is a spiced herbal liqueur with a long island history.

Beach pavilions along the western coast serve everything from coffee and pancakes to full dinners with sea views. Several farms and small shops sell local products such as honey, jam and ice cream.

Honeymoon Tips

Book accommodation early for summer weekends and Dutch holiday periods. Many places require minimum stays in peak season.

Bring warm layers, a windproof jacket and sunscreen even in summer. The breeze can make warm days feel cool.

Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and follow flag warnings, since the North Sea has strong currents.

If you plan to cycle a lot, rent e-bikes. They make the island headwinds much easier.

Check seal tour and restaurant hours outside June through September, as schedules shrink.

Pair Texel with Amsterdam and Haarlem for a balanced trip, or continue across the Afsluitdijk dam to Friesland.
