Honeymoon Stay Styles

Start with how you want to wake up; the rest follows

Some couples know exactly where they want to go. Many more know how they want to feel: suspended over a lagoon, tucked into a forest canopy, staring up at the aurora from a warm bed, or sipping wine on a terrace above rolling hills. Our collections group every retreat we feature by the kind of experience it offers, so you can browse by mood rather than by map.

Each collection page explains what makes that style of stay special, where in the world it shines, how to choose between properties, the best time to go and booking tips specific to that type. Plenty of stays appear in more than one collection, because a cliffside resort may also have private pool villas and a remote private island might be all-inclusive too.

On the Water and the Sand

Overwater Bungalows are the classic honeymoon icon, found in the Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji and even a few spots in the Caribbean and Mexico. Think Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, Gili Lankanfushi in North Malé Atoll or Likuliku Lagoon Resort in the Mamanuca Islands.

Private Islands take seclusion one step further: one island, one resort and very few other guests. North Island in the Seychelles, The Brando on Tetiaroa and Cayo Espanto off Ambergris Caye all fit the bill.

Beachfront Resorts and Private Pool Villas cover everything from easygoing Caribbean classics like Grace Bay Club to walled villas with plunge pools in Bali and Phuket, where privacy is the real luxury.

Up High and in the Trees

Cliffside Suites deliver the drama: infinity pools that seem to spill into the sea and sunsets that stop conversation. The caldera of Santorini, the Amalfi Coast, Bali's Uluwatu and Saint Lucia's Soufrière are the heartlands, with standouts such as Jade Mountain, Katikies Santorini and Bulgari Resort Bali.

Treehouses range from architectural showpieces like Treehotel in Swedish Lapland to rustic-chic retreats like TreeHouse Point in Washington and suspended orbs at Free Spirit Spheres on Vancouver Island. Further south, Keemala in Phuket and Azulik Tulum bring the idea to the tropics.

Under the Northern Lights

Glass Igloos & Ice Hotels are made for winter honeymooners. In Finnish Lapland, Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort and Levin Iglut Golden Crown put glass between you and the sky. In Swedish Lapland, Icehotel rebuilds its art suites from river ice each winter. Closer to home, Borealis Basecamp near Fairbanks offers aurora viewing without crossing an ocean. The aurora is never guaranteed, so plan several nights and enjoy the saunas, huskies and snowy forests in between.

Into the Wild

Safari Lodges and Luxury Tents & Glamping bring you close to nature without giving up comfort. In Africa, Singita Sasakwa Lodge in the Serengeti, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and Londolozi Game Reserve in Sabi Sand are the standouts. Glamping takes other forms too: Nayara Tented Camp near Arenal in Costa Rica, Capella Ubud in Bali and Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in northern Thailand.

Desert & Canyon Retreats and Cabins & Lodges cover the quieter side of the wild. Amangiri in Southern Utah and Enchantment Resort in Sedona offer red-rock silence, while Blackberry Farm in the Great Smoky Mountains and The Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize's Cayo District offer fireside coziness.

Culture, Wine and Wellness

Ryokans & Onsen offer a uniquely Japanese kind of romance, from Hoshinoya Kyoto on the river to Gora Kadan in Hakone. Vineyard & Countryside Estates mean long lunches and cellar tastings at places like Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, Borgo Santo Pietro in Tuscany and Babylonstoren in the Cape Winelands.

Historic Grand Hotels bring old-world glamour: Villa d'Este and Passalacqua on Lake Como, or Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise beside its glacier-fed lake. Spa & Wellness Retreats such as The Retreat at Blue Lagoon in Iceland and Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort build the whole stay around rest and recovery.

Kid-Free and All-Inclusive

Two collections cut across every style. Kid-Free Stays guarantee a calm, grown-up atmosphere, from Hotel Wailea on Maui to Ladera Resort in Saint Lucia. All-Inclusive Honeymoons wrap meals, drinks and often activities into one price, a big plus at remote properties. They range from lively Caribbean favorites such as Couples Swept Away to ultra-exclusive escapes such as Turtle Island in Fiji, where you can simply show up and relax.

FAQ

Which type of stay is most romantic?

It depends entirely on the two of you. Beach lovers rarely regret an overwater bungalow or private pool villa, while adventurous couples tend to treasure safari lodges and treehouses. Food and wine lovers often find vineyard estates and ryokans the most memorable. Our Honeymoon Finder can help if you're torn.

Why does a hotel appear in more than one collection?

Many retreats offer more than one experience. A cliffside resort may have villas with private pools, or a private island may be all-inclusive. We list stays in every collection that genuinely fits, so you can find them however you choose to browse.

Are overwater bungalows only in the Maldives and Bora Bora?

No. Those are the best-known locations, but you'll also find overwater rooms in Fiji, Belize and on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Each collection page lists the retreats we feature and explains how they compare in terms of travel time, budget and setting.

Can we combine different types of stays on one trip?

Yes. It's a great way to add variety. Popular combinations include a safari lodge followed by a beach stay, a ryokan after a few days in the city, or a treehouse in Lapland paired with a glass igloo. Allow a few nights in each so transfers don't eat into your downtime.
