Why Honeymoon in Krabi & Railay
The scenery alone makes a case. Railay's beaches are framed by sheer limestone walls. The waters around Krabi hold dozens of islands, from the Phi Phi archipelago to the lagoon-centered Hong Islands. Very few honeymoon destinations deliver this kind of landscape so close to an international-standard airport.
Krabi also strikes a lovely balance between activity and rest. Adventurous couples can try their first rock climb together on world-famous cliffs, kayak through hidden lagoons or snorkel coral gardens, while those who want a slower pace can simply move between beach, spa and sunset bar. Prices for food, boats and massages are generally lower than in Phuket and the atmosphere is more laid-back. Railay itself has no cars, which gives evenings a hushed, almost island-village feel once the day-trippers leave.
When to Go
Like Phuket, Krabi sits on the Andaman coast. Its best season runs roughly from November to April. Expect sunny days, calm seas and excellent conditions for boat trips, snorkeling and climbing. December through February is the most popular and expensive stretch, while March and April are hotter but often quieter.
The southwest monsoon arrives around May and lasts until about October. Rain usually falls in heavy bursts rather than all day and the landscape is lush. Seas can be rough, though, so some boat excursions are canceled on stormy days. Since getting to and from Railay depends on boats, keep a little flexibility in your plans during green season. If you're traveling in June to August and want guaranteed sunshine, consider pairing Krabi with Koh Samui on the Gulf side.
Where to Stay
Railay's crown jewel is Rayavadee, a resort of about 100 two-story pavilions and villas set among coconut groves at the tip of the peninsula. It is the only place where your room sits between three beaches: Railay West, the quieter Nam Mao and the famous Phranang. Its restaurant inside a limestone cave on Phranang Beach is among the most romantic dining experiences in Thailand. Pool Pavilions offer private pools in walled gardens. It is our top pick for honeymooners.
Elsewhere on Railay, mid-range resorts line West and East Railay, while Ton Sai attracts climbers and backpackers. On the mainland, Ao Nang is the busy hub, with plenty of hotels and restaurants. The coast north of it, around Klong Muang and Tubkaek, holds larger luxury resorts on quieter beaches with views of the islands. If you want the boat-only magic, stay on Railay itself for at least part of your trip.
Romantic Things to Do
Start with Phra Nang Beach, a crescent of soft sand beneath towering cliffs, home to a cave shrine honoring a legendary sea princess. Come early, before the boats from Ao Nang arrive. You may have it almost to yourselves.
Kayaking is a Krabi essential. Paddle through mangrove channels and along cliff bases to discover hidden caves, or join a guided outing to a secluded lagoon. Railay is also one of the world's best-known rock-climbing areas. Guided half-day sessions welcome beginners. Even if you only climb a few meters, the views and the shared accomplishment make it memorable.
For a full day on the water, hire a private long-tail or speedboat to the Hong Islands, where a hidden lagoon sits inside a ring of rock, or head to the Phi Phi Islands. End any day with a sunset long-tail cruise, watching the cliffs glow as the sun drops into the Andaman.
Getting There & Around
Fly into Krabi International Airport (KBV), usually via Bangkok, which is about an hour and twenty minutes away by air; some international routes connect via other Asian hubs. Phuket airport is another option, about two to three hours away by road, or you can arrive by ferry from Phuket or the Phi Phi Islands.
To reach Railay, drive to the coast and continue by boat. Long-tail boats run from Ao Nang to Railay West in about 15 minutes. Boats from the Krabi town area land on East Railay. Luxury resorts like Rayavadee organize private car-and-speedboat transfers. Note that boat landings can involve wading through shallow water, so pack light and use soft luggage if possible. On Railay itself, everything is reached on foot along sandy paths and short trails.
Food & Drink
Krabi's food is unpretentious and delicious. Expect fresh seafood grilled on the beach, southern Thai curries with plenty of heat and simple noodle soups at local stalls. In Ao Nang and Krabi town, evening markets offer an easy way to graze through local snacks together.
On Railay, the dining is mostly casual, with beach restaurants and laid-back bars on the walkways between beaches. For a special night, Rayavadee's restaurants raise the bar: a cave dinner on Phranang Beach, Thai cooking on the sand and sunset drinks with cliff views. Ask any good resort to set up a private dinner on the beach. It is surprisingly easy to arrange and you'll talk about it for years. Fresh coconuts, mango sticky rice and a cold Thai beer after climbing are small but essential pleasures.
Honeymoon Tips
- Visit the most famous beaches early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Day-trippers arrive from late morning to mid-afternoon.
- Pack soft luggage and water shoes for boat landings.
- Book private boat charters rather than group tours for island-hopping, especially to the Hong Islands.
- Combine Krabi with Phuket for contrasting stays, or fly north to Chiang Rai for culture.
- Monkeys on Railay are bold; keep snacks out of sight.
- Respect the national park rules and reef life; use reef-safe sunscreen.
- Use a headlamp on the short jungle paths between Railay's beaches after dark.
